Please God, no BCS Bowl!

I hope we win out and finish 10-2 (probability under 25%, I think). I pray, however, we do NOT sneak into a BCS bowl game. This is because one bowl game ***-raping is horrendous but bowl game *** rapes in successive years would be crushing. Sneaking into a BCS bowl game this year through the back door will have a cruelly ironic meaning after the game given the likely teams we'd have to play. Any possible match up in a BCS bowl game has us badly over-matched.

We have a history of sneaking into BCS bowl games with less-than-competitive teams in the not-too-distant past. We got slaughtered in both of them.

We have not had one dominant win over a good team all year. Yes, we snuck by MSU and ASU but they were not dominant wins (which I define as wins by at least 14 points). On the other hand we have escaped with our lives against weak teams (Purdue and Navy come to mind).

ND doesn't need the BCS cash and we'll be far better off playing a truly competitive game in a non-BCS bowl.

I'm afraid BYU or Stanford, or both of them, are going to moot any chance of our getting into a BCS bowl. Even if we beat both of them, however, I don't think we belong no matter what our fan appeal is,

Wanting to get into a BCS bowl game is a case of "be careful what you wish for" in my honest opinion.

I love ND football and want what's best for the school, the football program and its future. Getting slaughtered in a BCS Bowl game this year doesn't do ND football any good whatsoever. I think it's a big negative for recruiting when compared to a win in a lesser bowl. Yes, miracles happen and we might win a BCS bowl game. Would you put your money on that happening? Not me.

I invite any rational arguments proving me wrong about this. Thank you for anyone who responds with substance and not invective.

There is a thread discussing all bowl games and people's feeling on our chances in a BCS game is pretty much the main topic.

Also... you thought a thread that started with "please god no" wouldn't lead to invective responses?

I have said the same thing multiple times... Pinstripe vs. Cincinnati is fine with me.

I agree, nothing good about being in a BCS game if you're not competitive. Teams like Clemson, OSU, FSU, Baylor, and others would be bad matchups for this team.

If one was to take a poll of the current Irish players and coaches and ask them if they would rather play in a BCS bowl against a high quality opponent and possibly lose or play against a lesser opponent and win I am sure they would choose the BCS bowl game opponent every time.

Football is born out of the struggle to compete against the best opponent possible. And that will to compete alll too often leads to the will to win. But win or lose... you face the challenge like a true warrior. Instead of "Please God" it should say "Thank God" the Irish players have that will to compete at the highest level. Some fans need to grasp on to that and stand behind their team.

I am done with this thread.

Christ, grow a pair. We're 27-6 our last 33 games. Take away the Bama game which we were playing a semi-pro team, and our worst loss since then is what, by 14 points to a Stanford team with Luck?

I'd rather not watch us play North Texas in the Heart of Dallas Bowl (which Schlabach is currently projecting us to do).
