There was some talk in the Keon Keeley thread about what players almost ended up at ND, whether it was guys who flipped, were silent and went elsewhere, wanted to come but we didn't push for, or players we finished 2nd for. I'm not sure if there is a thread dedicated to that, but I thought it would make for some good discussion.
We all know some of the ones from the last few recruiting cycles, so I'm going back a little bit, but here are some that come to mind for me:
Luke Kuechly - High academic kid, and he has talked about being disappointed that ND never offered. His HS coach was quoted as saying "Luke would have ended the recruiting process before it ever began if Notre Dame."
Arrelious Benn - He was a silent commit to ND in the spring/summer of 2006 but was apparently turned off by the staff telling him to make it public right away.
Curtis Samuel - Loy said that Samuel and his parents really liked ND and he wanted to be Irish. Although he had an offer, apparently Diaco never really talked to him.
Will Compton - He has gone on the record several times that he badly wanted to come to ND, but Weis dicked him around until a few weeks before NSD when they missed out on players in the Army game. He said he would've committed even if they offered late in the season (October/November), but the offer just weeks before NSD and at Fullback, as opposed to Linebacker, turned him off.
Thomas Graham - ISD and IB have said multiple times that he was pretty much set on ND but the staff absolutely bungled his recruitment.
Martez Wilson - He seemed like a ND lock, so I have no clue what happened there.
Pete Werner - Did he flip because the team went 4-8 or because the staff ignored him down the stretch?
Omar Hunter - I'm still not sure what the story was. Did he flip because the team stunk and he would've stayed committed if we had a better record? Was it due to not wanting to play in the 3-4? Was it distance?
Gerell Robinson - Like with Hunter, I'm still not sure what the story was. Was it because he didn't want to be 4th WR in the class (along with Floyd, Goodman, and Deion Walker)? Was it due to distance?
