Players who almost ended up at ND

Greg Little is another one. Many thought he was an ND lock at WR but he ended up going to UNC. Weird how ND finished 2nd to UNC a bunch of times between 2006 and 2010. I don't remember exactly what happened with him though. Him, Tate, Floyd, and Rudolph would have been too much firepower on that 2009 team.

It felt like they finished second to a lot of programs for a lot of guys. Compounded with the lack of recruiting quality and quantity from Willingham prior to that, it didn't help us when it came to rational thought.

Am I also completely misremembering it but wasn't ND a player for Marvin Austin? I seem to remember a message board story of some ND fan at a party that ended up in a hot tub with Marvin Austin and was recruiting him.

I guess he did attend Notre Dame for like two weeks but if we're throwing it back to the Willingham years, my in-laws remain to this day offended about Greg Olsen flipping to Miami.

He was at the Blue and Gold Game the day after Clausen committed. He never took an official visit. He took one to Illinois since he was a DC kid and Locksley got him on campus. At the time I was hoping he went anywhere but USC. I think he took an official there too. Most figured it would be SC or FSU. He went to UNC. It was odd.

That DT class was full of guys this board was hungry for at the time. Austin, Barksdale, Myles Wade, Andre Jones, Josh Brent. That was the Ian Williams and Emeka Nwankwo class. Two three star DT from Florida. Emeka may have been listed on the sites as a guard.

I think Brent would've committed to ND if they took a gamble on him. He visited ND 3 times within a 2-3 month period and seemed really excited about ND. I think the staff didn't want to deal with someone who Admissions might not admit. After visiting the 3rd time and meeting with the coaches, he said something along the lines of he didn't fit in, which made no sense given how many times he visited and how excited he was about ND. It was likely because he didn't want to mention that he was a borderline recruit with grades. I'm not sure why the staff didn't take a gamble on him considering he had the exact same GPA as Paddy Mullen did and his SAT score was better than the SAT (or ACT equivalent) of quite a few players Weis signed in both the 2006 and 2007 classes.

He went to Illinois and never really played. I know Marvin Austin played in the NFL for a short time, but Ian Williams did too as an UDRFA and ultimately I really liked Ian Williams when all was said and done. Williams played for the 49ers for five years. Austin played for about the same time and played for 3-4 teams. He was a second round pick.

Brent never really did it for me, though he was an Illinois kid at a Catholic School, which is not lost on me by any means.

Will Blackwell was another guy but he was a Louisiana kid who went to LSU. Never really had a shot you'd imagine.

Cam Heyward was in that class. Ohio State and now a very good NFL player on and off the field. I think Rivals had him 14th among DT.

Most of that Zook class in 2006 other than Regus Benn and Tez Wilson really didn't amount to a great deal.

There were a lot of really good players in that class (2007) that ND never offered or heavily pursued that they should've. Heyward was a good student and I don't think ND ever offered him. Another guy that ND never offered was Derrick Morgan. Top 100 player from Pennsylvania who had a 3.8 GPA. Inexcusable.

I am very fortunate to be close with someone who coached under Lou and also worked a lot with recruiting. He has had some fun stories to tell me. He recently told me about how Qadry Ismail wanted to come to ND to play with his brother. For lack of better terms, they didnt push for him because they didnt want to have to continue to deal with the family.
They didnt push for him because he played alot of FB at E.L. Meyers and not much WR. ND offered him a full ride for Track and offered him a PWO position.

I don’t know how to feel about this thread.
It’s silly. Especially considering that most of these players didn’t come close to ending up at ND. Seriously, if you weren’t even recruited then you didn’t end up at ND, unless we’re counting the opposite sideline.
