I know it's not ideal, but I thought I might be able to. Maybe I'll just get a cheap ultra light combo for crappie and trout and grab a better reel for bass and cats. How's this one look?

Shimano® Sedona FD Spinning Reel : Cabela's

For the most part can't go wrong with Shimano, though I have never fished a Sedona. I have a Sahara 2500 that I love, those will run you a few bucks more. Are you buying a rod too? I was poking around BPS and found your Sedona in this combo...

Shimano Sedona Spinning Combo

Not bad for under 100 bucks. Also tons of options available as far as rod length, line weight, reel size etc.

Realllly like the Shimano Stradic though. By far my favorite reel that I own.

Wonderful thread idea. Finally an actual thread dedicated to our normal PMs, Peoria! The next 8 months of my life will probably be more about reading the awesome adventures that y'all go on as I'll be extremely busy. However... one of the fellas in the Academy with me is a gunsmith so my "off season" could still be fun!

Haha no joke! This weekend should be a blast. My 2 best buds are coming down and we are heading over to Busch Conservation Area for a bunch of fishing and to shoot the 3d course both Saturday and Sunday. I can't wait! Hopefully shoot straight and keep our lines tight!

It's always fun to have a gunsmith buddy. Whenever they have a free minute, just have them work on your triggers or something simple. They are a huge asset to have.

I took my pharmacy board (NAPLEX) yesterday. I thought I'd celebrate by getting out on the Bay today. While wade fishing I got tagged by a stingray. Was home by 8am, and worse yet didn't catch squat.

Same to you bro, and thank you. I have one more to go, the law portion. Then start my career as a pusher.

What reel did you end up with?

Found out today that I passed! Such an awesome feeling. Good luck with your next exam!

Ended up with this one.

Bass Pro Shops® Pro Qualifier® Spinning Reels | Bass Pro Shops

And this reel. Got them as a combo so I saved like $40.

Bass Pro Shops® Johnny Morris® CarbonLite™ Series Spinning Rods | Bass Pro Shops

Niiice. I find out tomorrow. I'm anxious but I think it went well. The girlfriend's sister is finishing up PT school this year, says it's no joke.

That combo looks tasty. I've never fished the BPS brands, but I know a lot of people that love em. Reviews are solid. Tight lines.

So I was in New Orleans this weekend for a bachelor party. I got back late Sunday night to a text from a buddy of mine asking if I wanted to fish early Monday... I rarely get a chance to fish offshore so I called off work and gave him the affirmative.

In the PM the forecast was pretty grim, but we decided to give er hell for the first half of the day. The bait situation wasn't ideal. I was at the bow tossing the net, but the bait was swimming deep making it difficult to get the net on top of them fast enough. I ended up offering to buy bait (we NEVER do that) just because I was anxious to get out with bad weather rolling in later in the day. Stocked up with 4 dozen pinfish we head out.

We go out about 7 miles and decided to turn back, the 4-5" swells were too much for my buddy who was getting sick as a dog. He felt aweful since I had bought the bait and all but whatever, this stuff happens. On the way in he asks if I want to sit a channel connecting the gulf and the intercoastal waterway to see if we can pick anything up cruising through. Of course I say yes because given the choice I will ALWAYS fish.

We fish for three hours with not one bite. I mean, I am fishing EVERYTHING from bottom with a 5/0 j hook, 4 oz egg sinker strung with 50# braid, to free-lining a live baitfish, to hard plastics in the surf and I am getting no love. I do not claim to be an expert by any means, but I literally fished every inch of the water column with every bait (artificial and live) I had and nada.

At this point my buddy asks if I want to call it, and I regretfully accept thinking this day was doomed from the get go. I'm hungry, sunburned and sleepy from my long weekend. Worst part yet is that I have not had even one take.

My buddy starts up the boat and I draw anchor. Out of nowhere he asks if I want to try to free line a little eddy on the other side of the bridge, where we has seen some bait flashing a little earlier... of course again I am game. The angle of the little area we were fishing is such that he needs to keep to the boat controls giving her a little every so often to keep our nose pointed into the current so I can cast. Three drifts later and I am on... first hit of the day AND IT IS A SEA MONSTER. This thing is just stripping line. Whatever it is is a leviathan, because with my drag set for big fish it is just peeling it off... zzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!

The fight was about 30-40 min in total, with my buddy manning the controls and me navigating the entire length of the boat trying my hardest not to screw up and lose this fish... The rig I was using was a 7' Shimano Terez medium paired with a Quantum Cabo PTsD 50 (~5000 class) lined with 30# Momo Diamond Braid (50# flouro leader).

The end result of the day, my first Tarpon. ~60lbs. I can now die a happy man.

Check the shirt... Go Irish!

The fish dragged us from all the way from the bridge in the background, jumped 3 times and literally shredded the right side of my body hah.

And a safe release.

Awesome man. Thats a heck of a story! Sometimes it works out like that though. Work hard and hit it all day, then just dragging the shoreline on the way in, you hit a lunker.

I've been out a few times over the past few weeks with no luck at all. It's been pretty cool up here, so the fishing has been weird. Supposed to warm up this weekend though, so we should be good. But I'm heading to the sticks this weekend to do some scouting for archery season, so the fishing is gunna have to wait.

Awesome job, Shakedown!

Love tarpon. Now you have to catch one on the flats.

Good job on the release too. I usually cringe when I see the beginning of a tarpon sequence because a lot of guys bring them on the boat, take too many pics and essentially kill the fish despite "releasing it". Not you, my friend. Handled it like a pro.

Congrats again.

Not yet. That was actually one of the places I was thinking about checkin out this weekend. I was gunna sit down Thursday when I'm off work and figure out where I wanna go. I know you've told me, but where around there would you recommend I check. And it's Mark Twain State Park you're talkin about, right? Up by you?

Thanks all. I've been glowing all day, and not just from the sunburn.

Miss being out in the woods Peoria. Best of luck with the trip.

Yeah Wooly, same here. Hate to see such an awesome fish boated and bleeding on deck, nothing makes me more angry. She was green going back in and sped off, we didn't even pull her 1/2 way out.

Next on the list is a Silver King on kayak, 40+ inch snook club, and literally anything on a fly rod. I have a buddy that used to guide out in Omaha, I'm going to try to get him to show me the ropes. Any suggestions on a cheap saltwater fly set up anyone? I literally know nothing about the fly game.

Yeah. There is an arm of lick creek that should be really good when the deer start the rut. Its roughly 3/4 of a mile from where i hunt but there is timber connecting the two. Lots of nice deer run the small creek arms around the lake. I can give you better directions if you decide to come up. There are lots of good places around if you get serious about it. I could be wrong but i think there is 30000 plus acres of core ground to hunt.

I'm game to come check it out. I need somewhere to hunt and that sounds as good as any. I'll probably head out Saturday morning. Either post here, or just PM with better directions. I live on the corner of 170 and 64/40 in St Louis. It's all public, right?

Brentwood? My sister just moved from there. She lived right behind the target.

Anyway, take 64/40 to Hwy 61 north I think the sign says Hannibal.

Stay on 61 roughly forty miles until you get to Bowling Green. Take the second Bowling Green exit. (hwy 54) Turn left at the top of the exit. (which will be west)

Continue on 54 west through Curryville (do not speed through Curryville) shortly after curryville hwy 154 will kinda veer off to your right and hwy 54 will make a hard left. Take Hwy 154.

Stay on hwy 154 until it dead ends at hwy 19. turn right (north)

follow 19 north 7 miles. You will see a bait and tackle shop, gas station, restaurant ect. on your right. Stop at the bait and tackle shop and get a map of the lake. There are free ones in there. Shows all of the hunting areas and things also.

hwy 154 heads back west towards Perry. follow 2 miles into Perry. There is only 1 stop light in the town, when you get to that, turn right. You will be on route J

Take route J to the first bridge there is a hunter/ fisher access there. The timber on the east side of the road is public. Dwayne Whealen is the boat ramp name.

Again there is tons of great hunting around the lake. I will hit up some guys tomorrow for other possible spots to check out. I was just giving you this one because the timber I hunt mainly, is connected to the that draw there at lick creek. Once you pick the map up and see all the public ground you may change your mind on where you want to go.

Should you find yourself tooling down Blind Pass (between St. Pete Beach and Treasure Island/Sunset Beach – if I remember correctly, though it's been 50 years), tip your ND cap to me at 8540 Gulf Boulevard. I lived there from 1959 to 1963 and have many fond memories from those years.

Schools (pods?) of dolphin cruising by our dock. Mullets (the fish, not the atrocious haircuts) running. Me and Julio down by the school yard. Oh, wait. That was probably me and Paul Simon when he came down from NYC on vacation.

I am looking at spending between $100-$150, mostly inshore species like snook, reds, specks, macks etc. I don't think I need advice so much on a specific rig for my needs, but maybe more so on areas to start researching, brands to look into, differences specific to saltwater etc.

I basically need a solid all around brand that can take a beating and rough the salt to learn on.

To be honest, $150 is pretty cheap for a fly rod. You can probably get into one of those kits for that, but those things are complete garbage for the most part. I would check ebay, craigslist, etc for a used setup if that is your pricepoint. Go with a 9ft 8 or 9 weight rod. For bonefish, reds, snook, etc that will be plenty of rod. A good all around salt stick.

**Edit - Check this out. Temple Fork Fly Fishing Rod and Reel

This is a good deal on a rod that I can attest to being pretty good. It's only $95 obo, so you should call him asap. That's a screaming deal.

Wanted to bump this up.

Wooly, what are your top 5 US fly fishing destinations (trout only)? Any within striking distance of Philly? I still need to do a float on the Delaware...

I grew up fishing the classic PA streams (Penns Creek, Fishing Creek, etc.) and now have the cash and some fishing buddies to take some trips.

Also, you are in NY right? Where do you fish nowadays?

That is awesome. I don't know a thing about salt water fishing but that looks like that had to be a load of fun. I got to head south one winter and try that out.

Do you ever buy shiners? I sell shiners to a couple of different haulers that haul them to Florida weekly.
