The Brian Kelly Era has been defined by USC either having an interim coach when ND faces them or a backup QB starting the game. I would love nothing more than to have SC come to South Bend unbeaten and see them leave with a loss. Or have a highly meaningful game in LA come November between two top ten ranked teams. It would mean more to me. Saturday meant very little. I expected ND to win that game rather comfortably and they did. I nearly dozed off.

Too many of these rivalries have no ebb and flow anymore.

I understand why everyone wants USC to be relevant when we play them. But I love beating USC no matter what the circumstances. Saturday, and the past 4 years, have still been very sweet for me...especially considering my fandom started in '01 with cheatin' Pete and that awful run....

2017 was so cathartic. I watched with 2 friends (a Husker and Aggie) and could see their jealousy as my team took their archrival behind the woodshed. Fun times

Yeah as someone who was a kid just starting to watch games in the early 2000s, i'm very very happy with USC's disfunction lol

That's straight fire from Tomlin and why I love the guy. And it's also why I'd hate to for ND to have to coach/recruit against him every year. Dudes a beast.

Don’t know if there is another thread discussing this, but since it’s a rumor…anyone else hearing that Kyle Hamilton is being told by people around him he might want to shut it down for the season to be healthy for the draft? If he doesn’t play another snap at ND he is already looking at $35+million guaranteed in the spring.

As an Irish fan, I’d hate to see that happen. But I would also completely understand and respect that decision. The dude has a lot of money on the table right now

It appears you and everyone else shall never lose a wink of sleep over that. Ever.

Mike Tomlin is amazing. It’s crazy to think he’s been in the league and a head coach for so long, but he’s still only like 48 years old.

To be honest, it's weird how circular some of these rumors are. Like the one about Alt and Fisher and "WhO's GoInG tO bE tHe LT???" while we're in the middle of the season with bad OL play and they're both true freshman. That came from Mike Frank just making shit up, and then I read it like 5 different places as if it was something that was actually happening (it isn't).

On the Hamilton thing, all of these kids now are going to have agents and all of those agents are going to be telling them to sit out + leave early. The agents want to protect their paycheck. I am 100% sure that Hamilton is being told by people not to play another down of college football. I am not sure what his feelings are, but I would imagine that as a captain he's not going to sit unless his injuries risk further damage. I think that right now the rumor is nothing but an echo chamber, but these kinds of things can change really quickly.

I don't know if it's been posted but I guess Franklin fired his agent and hired some super agent/agency.. He may be leaving after all.

I did think this was funny from the same article. LOL

I’ve been asked this question multiple times and my focus is completely on (Ohio State) and this team and this program,” Franklin said. “I think I’ve shown over my eight years my commitment to this university and this community.” The Penn State has used his “1-0” mantra as a way to block out the noise in the past and continues to do that through the latest round of rumors. The intention being to focus solely on the opponent ahead rather than any potential ramifications for big-picture goals or any outside interference with the message. Franklin’s focus, however, seemed to be slightly off at his weekly press conference, with him twice citing Illinois as the team he was focused on while the Ohio State Buckeyes loom as the next opponent.

Franklin could be great at USC, he'll certainly recruit his ass off. But it's stuff like this that makes me hopeful that his true colors ultimately undermine their operation.

He should consider this. I say so knowing that not only is he injured but he's been targeted by at least two cheap shots so far this season that I can recall.

Kyle might be a 20 year old college athlete, but he is allowed to act in his own self interests

I support him shutting it down. We aren't winning a natty this year. No need to risk further injury with so little upside to playing and so much potential downside. Kelly just said he has been helping coach at practice. Have him keep doing that and maybe have him help out the recruiting office on gamedays. In that sense he can continue to help the program without having to risk his draft position.

If "we aren't winning the natty" is the criteria for an elite player sitting out, then most of the early draft picks should sit out most, if not all, of their seasons.

ND has 1 loss and will be the favorite in every remaining game. This is not a lost season.

I think that with first round guys, who suffered injuries, it actually will trend that way. I also think playing for a ring probably would sway some guys to come back despite risk of injury. I don't think we will see perfectly healthy guys just stop playing mid-year, but as soon as there is a scare, like with Hamilton, I could see shutting it down.

If in a few weeks ND is in the top 4 and the team is starting to click, who knows, maybe he wants to come back.

agree, there is still a lot to play for. not a fan of shutting the season down but i completely understand why they do it. kyle hamilton the greatest safety in ND history.

To me, and I think a lot of other people too, there is a difference between completely sitting out a season and shutting it down after an injury.

Also, there is a difference between not winning a natty and a lost season. As the importance of the season goes down, so should the threshold of players sitting out. KH is probably a top 10 pick. For him, the only reason he should come back after any decent injury is to compete for a championship. On the other hand, if a team is barely going to get bowl eligibility, then I wouldn't fault anyone who is a likely day 2 draft pick from shutting it down after an injury.

If it was my son and had a significant injury and ND is playing in a non playoff bowl game...it's a no brainer. Too big of a risk.

If we make it that far with out him IMO than we don’t need him then. If you quit you are not welcome back. Matter of fact screw you.

And if he does do quit I hope see that and question him on that at the combine.

I sure hope he shows the player he has been the last 2.5 years and shows the reasons he chose ND in the first place.
