Yeah, I'm curious as well. The option was GT's thing for so long. It's a perpetually dangerous thing to play against when you only have one opponent that runs it.

This is true.

Although early on we had great success for teams like Clemson, UGA, etc with the option. In the later years not so much. Was it a scheme thing, or did the talent gap widen that much? Just felt like the offensive production wasn't what it once was the last couple of years.

Used to be there were plenty of high school football teams that ran the option and allowed GT to get some recruits that could play the option at the collegiate level. The number of HS option teams has dwindled down over the last ten years making it more difficult for GT to recruit option players. It could still cause issues if a team could get the players, I just think it is way harder to get kids to want to play in the option these days.

Fortuna or Sampson on The Shamrock stated that ND’s first six opponents are among the 10 worst teams when it comes to turnovers. Yet ND isn’t the opponent responsible for most of them. Maybe they can pad that stat this Sat.

I think for the most part people like Collins. A few are getting tired of his press conferences and his slogans. He repeats the same phrases over and over. Some have compared it to Butch Jones. So, he has to show he can start winning at some point in the near future.

Overall he is a high energy guy who is more of a recruiter than an X and O guy.

The majority are happy. You have the select few (I would guess somewhere around 5-10 %) who wanted us to hire another option type and stick with that. Most thought the option had run its course and were ready to see something else.

Collins and Johnson are just so night and day different in every aspect.

I get college coaches are super paranoid but he still won’t list his 2-deep to the media. I don’t think that’s what’s keeping GT from winning.

We rarely recruited guys from option HS teams to be honest.

The overwhelming majority were from normal HS spread offenses.

Another one of the things some GT fans get tired of.

We have an "ATL chart"

Basically, its who is Above The Line has earned the opportunity in practice to be able. to play.

It's annoying and never right.

What's odd about 'Option' offenses...

When ND won the last NC in 1988, the only player on the team with over 1k yards rushing was Rice....

And the RB's were Brooks, Waters, Culver and Green as the primaries....

I am not loving the idea of personnel packages with Skowronek and McKinley as the only two WRs. I hope Skrownak is also getting work at the W.

They do appear to be very similar in their skill sets. Seriously disappointed that Lenzy can't stay healthy and feel for him. Maybe they work in JJ a bit against GT and keep trying to advance his progress, see how he's looking next week.

I know Lenzy is listed on the depth chart but I would be shocked if he played. Need to let him rest and hope he can impact the Clemson game.

EDIT: Just saw BK announced Lenzy is out vs. Clemson too and likely BC. Ouch. Hopefully this JJ pull up to varsity is legit, he gets his academic issues resolved and can make some plays.

After seeing how he had to be helped off the field, I guess that's not surprising.

Yep. I’m not expecting Lenzy back until the rematch with Clemson in the ACC championship game.

Interesting. Figured he'd be on the boundary side competing with Javon.
Oh well

Agreed. Think the four guys they'll use at the X and Y are Ben S, McKinley, JJ, and Wilkins. I don't see Wilkins on the boundary but that's where he'll be If Ben S and JJ are at the X.

Or course we may just play 4 TE's the whole game and never see either JJ or Joe W.

I bet it’s b/c Ben has been battling a hammy, too; so they want to be prepared as possible if it acts up again.

IDK. Skow looked pretty damn good last week. And while I love Javon, he's anemic in terms of separation downfield, and doesn't have the speed/hops/height to be a consistent ball snatcher like Claypool. Not saying a better Book can't make Javon more productive, but it is what it is, and we saw how Book looks with Skow.

The depth chart shows Wilkins at both boundary and slot. Wouldn't mind seeing him at either TBH if JJ is Field. I'd really like to see Watts at some point too. Wouldn't mind see Micha in some RZ sets with Skow and Mayer too.

I'm perfectly OK with a lot of 2 TE sets. Mayer needs to be on the field as much as possible.

Yeah, just saw an article where BK acknowledged the WR group needs help, something we've known about for some time. Ben definitely took a bit step last week as a possible play maker, but maybe JJ can be the next if he's finally going to hit the big time. McKinley is great as a blocker, but too inconsistent as a pass catcher and can't get enough separation.
