That decision to punt was one of the silliest calls I think I have ever seen. There is soooooo much that can go wrong on a punt. Why not go for it? Or even kick the field goal?
30-40 yards to tie or 50-70. That's why. I agreed with the decision

Good call but poor execution. If Tausch puts that ball inside the 10, it's ball game. If they go for it and don't get it (first down or FG), BYU has good field position.
But what are the odds of Turk doing that? We were inside the 30... end result of the play was like a 10 yard difference.
Field goal = 50% chance you make it and they need a TD, 50% they have to go 50 to be in FG range.
Go for it = game over or they have to go 50 yards to be in FG range.
Punt = can get blocked, can have a bad snap, can get a return, or can at best pin them inside the 10 so they have to go 70 for a TD.
I'm pretty sure Football Outsiders would say that was a ridiculously bad decision by the odds.

I think they were between the 30-35 yard line, even at the 25 it's a 42 yard attempt and Brindza was not giving this staff lots of reason to believe. Snaps can go awry in the FG game as well as the punt game. I liked the call, should have pinned them at the 5 w a 25 yard gain in field position.
To be clear, I advocated going for it. Not kicking the FG. Just thought FG was also an acceptable option vs. punt... but I think the odds say you go for it there.
Kelly wanted Turk to pooch the ball but keep it in the field of play; he wanted the play to erase several more seconds off the clock. That's why he was all over Turk's butt for kicking it out of bounds.
Great call. Tauch should've had been able to angle punt better. Oh well, it worked out.
They should have taken the delay of game and punted it. It would give Turk a little bit more room.
All he had to was kick the ball like 15 yards, that is why Kelly went apesh#t on him.
Interesting idea: Send in Tausch or a walk-on to punt it. I bet they can't punt it 35 yards!
BRILLIANT!! Or Tommy Rees, god knows his feet weigh so much, reaching the endzone would not have been a problem...
It's just funny that the one time we want him to shank one, he doesn't.
Tommy Rees punted 3 times last year for ND, 34 Yds , 21 Yds, and 5 Yds.
Notable numbers
- Notre Dame's sixth successive home win is the longest since coach Bob Davie's 1997-99 Irish teams strung together 10.
