Kelly perfected the "winning close games against bad teams" from 2017 onward. He was kind of a train wreck at that in '10, '11, '16 and had toe stubs in '13, '14 too. It's sad that a lack of commitment to running the ball (Stanford) and a lackadaisical approach to game planning/preparation/adjustments on both sides of the ball (Marhsall) cost ND two of their three easiest Ws on the schedule. But I'm hopeful it's a learning experience, because this season is a throw away with Drew Pyne at QB.

That’s what frustrates me on the recency bias of BK from some ND fans. Yes, ND was practically automatic vs. Shitty-to-average teams from 2017-2021 & we are all grateful, but they had some inexplicable losses in the years you noted. And BK was not an inexperienced HC. He had achieved success at multiple levels.

The 2014 season was one of the most mind-numbing. I was at the UNC game that year when ND eked out a shootout (UNC had shitty defense back then too). Poor Golson was starting his fumblitis. Then the next week, ND goes down to Tallahassee and almost pulls off the upset over the defending National Champs who were undefeated at that point. If Jimbo doesn’t plant the seed w/ the refs about ND’s WR “setting picks”, it never gets called & ND wins. Then Joe Schmidt breaks his ankle in the Navy game & is never the same. The Irish blow leads against Louisville & Northwestern at home to complete the slide. Talk about a “WTF” season. The turd on top was the beatdown SC put on the Irish in the Coliseum before Sark mercifully called off the dogs.

ND went into the Music City Bowl as decided underdogs but pulled off the upset w/ the backup QB leading them to a win over Leonard Fournette & Co. Golson chipped in on passing downs but the writing was on the wall & he bailed after the Spring. What could’ve been.

We looked so good up through the FSU game in 2014, and so bad after that. Wild how the wheels came off that year.
Golson just imploded and the defense had so many injuries they were running on fumes by the USC game. That LSU bowl game was nice though. Start of the oh-so-brief Malik Zaire era.

The stanford L is looking like the worst ever in the last 10 years ever.
Factoring in the rivalry as well as their dogshittedness.

ICYMit Shaw quit last night. Basically gave up. Coaches better beware about taking this job. If the school doesn't change its attitude re transfers and fifth years they are screwed, no body will be able to turn it around.

Really looks like they'll be a bottom feeder a la Northwestern and Vandy going forward. Should help us.

Hypothetically, Stanford decides to get with the times. Would be a massive thorn in ND’s side. Would that be enough to force ND’s hand to rethink their current policies too?

Any players on that roster that make sense for us via transfer?

It would, but I think this is a pretty strong sign that your hypothetical isn’t going to happen.
