I’ve been a Notre Dame football fan since I was about 6 years old. I’m a fan of a whole bunch of teams, most of which I have a lot more tying me to than I just decided to root for them when I was in 1st grade. Still, that history and habit and loyalty keep me watching every Saturday every fall.

But no team I root for is as consistently frustrating or brings me as little joy as this team does. That’s been going on for 25 years now! I’m glad we took the ball and just stuffed it down their throats, but how is this ND defense having this much trouble with an offense that has long since given up on the season and wasn’t very good to begin with? Stanford is terrible. This defense is extremely talented. This is a pathetic effort to this point.

I’ve been consistently in favor of staying the course with Kelly for his entire tenure, but he lost me after the Michigan game and now I’m hopeful they make a move this offseason. But if they don’t (as I fully expect), there has to be another set of changes on the defensive side. I’m all for tinkering with coaching staff, but on top of that there has to be a philosophical change to playing defense downhill and not being so passive and easy to pick apart. I think about the defenses for the teams that are still alive for the CFP, and they would all bury this garbage Stanford team and to me that’s the entire difference between them and us, and why we are stuck in this second tier of college football programs.
