I understand what everybody is saying (and I'm not one necessarily clamoring for Redfield to get in there), but the underlying point remains-- if the staff can "dumb down" things for Smith, why can't they "dumb down" things for Redfield? Particularly when Kelly himself said just a couple months ago that the staff isn't doing their job if they can't get a player to understand the scheme (paraphrase).
I think that the simple answer may just be that Smith is a better player than Redfield...regardless of football IQ. And that's ok-- obviously all players aren't the same.
You may be right ... Kelly did say something along the lines of "If we can't dumb things down enough to get Jaylon on the field, we aren't doing our job." But I still think that, as others have said, as complex as DOG is, safety is even more complex, and the stakes are higher. Redfield just has more on his plate than Jaylon.
I don't know, maybe I just need to simply quit listening, watching, or reading Brian Kelly press conferences. I get frustrated by his coach speak. Ever since his preseason high praise of Darius Fleming a couple years ago, I feel there's generally a lack of sincerity in most things he says regarding players.
Yeah, you have to take the things he says with a grain of salt. One thing I've learned is never to assume that just because Kelly says that a guy is doing great, he is likely to see the field. I expected a lot more out of C.J. Prosise this year, the way Kelly talked about him in the offseason.
The other thing is that Kelly is just not that articulate. I wouldn't say that he is insincere; I think he just says things he doesn't quite mean because he doesn't quite know how to say what he's trying to say sometimes. I doubt he's really "dumbing things down" so that Jaylon can get on the field. Jaylon needs to be able to do the things that DOGs do; all 11 guys on the defense need to be able to do their jobs. A safety's job in a cover 2 system like ours just happens to be one of the most complex and important jobs, so it's taking longer for Redfield to get to the point where he can function properly.
Also, when Kelly made that comment about dumbing things down for Jaylon, he may have been talking about using him situationally. I don't think even Kelly thought that Jaylon would be able to be a starting DOG functioning at the level he is this year; he basically admitted as much.
