Not to drum up an old argument, but isn't DOG a tough position to learn too? And to paraphrase Kelly regarding Smith, isn't it part of their jobs (coaches) to make the scheme simple enough for young guys to understand the scheme?

What's different, then, with Safety and Redfield?

I don't know for sure, but I think the answer is mostly that Jaylon > Redfield in terms of football IQ. Kelly said in a recent media session that Jaylon has exceeded all their expectations with his play this season. We certainly can't infer from the fact that Jaylon is ahead of the curve that Redfield is behind the curve. Plus, obviously, the two guys ahead of Jaylon got hurt. With our depth at safety, there are a lot more guys who have to get hurt before Max gets pressed into service.

i would also say that if the safety is out of position that generally leads to big chunks in play if not a touchdown....at least in jaylon's spot you have a safety to pick it up unless your name is farley

I think the difference is that it's problematic to do that on all those position groups at once and after Spond went down, scheming to acclimate Jaylon took precedence. In addition, Danny Spond has been there to help. ND doesn't have that same level of experience from anyone at safety right now.

Yep, and the S is in charge of lining up the back end of the defense. If said S isn't confident in what he is seeing or confident enough to let others know its not going to work.

Max is also our last safety net so to speak ... I take the quote that Max gets his role as safety but theres still a need to learn the adjustments, coverages, etc of all the other DBs. Thats something Jaylon doesnt have to worry about. A safety is a general of the back field and has a lot more responsibilities

I understand what everybody is saying (and I'm not one necessarily clamoring for Redfield to get in there), but the underlying point remains-- if the staff can "dumb down" things for Smith, why can't they "dumb down" things for Redfield? Particularly when Kelly himself said just a couple months ago that the staff isn't doing their job if they can't get a player to understand the scheme (paraphrase).

I think that the simple answer may just be that Smith is a better player than Redfield...regardless of football IQ. And that's ok-- obviously all players aren't the same.

I don't know, maybe I just need to simply quit listening, watching, or reading Brian Kelly press conferences. I get frustrated by his coach speak. Ever since his preseason high praise of Darius Fleming a couple years ago, I feel there's generally a lack of sincerity in most things he says regarding players.

This is it. You don't have to look further than the impact Spond has had on a young Jaylon Smith. If he wasn't a big impact, would Jaylon have worn Spond's number for Senior Day? It was Jaylon's athleticism and Spond's assistance that helped a freshman play to his potential and then some this season. At safety this season the most experienced guy (Snaps at safety) we had was Farley I think. I wouldn't say Farley was in the same position to coach a guy like Redfield, especially since he wasn't on the sidelines watching like Spond was.

You may be right ... Kelly did say something along the lines of "If we can't dumb things down enough to get Jaylon on the field, we aren't doing our job." But I still think that, as others have said, as complex as DOG is, safety is even more complex, and the stakes are higher. Redfield just has more on his plate than Jaylon.

Yeah, you have to take the things he says with a grain of salt. One thing I've learned is never to assume that just because Kelly says that a guy is doing great, he is likely to see the field. I expected a lot more out of C.J. Prosise this year, the way Kelly talked about him in the offseason.

The other thing is that Kelly is just not that articulate. I wouldn't say that he is insincere; I think he just says things he doesn't quite mean because he doesn't quite know how to say what he's trying to say sometimes. I doubt he's really "dumbing things down" so that Jaylon can get on the field. Jaylon needs to be able to do the things that DOGs do; all 11 guys on the defense need to be able to do their jobs. A safety's job in a cover 2 system like ours just happens to be one of the most complex and important jobs, so it's taking longer for Redfield to get to the point where he can function properly.

Also, when Kelly made that comment about dumbing things down for Jaylon, he may have been talking about using him situationally. I don't think even Kelly thought that Jaylon would be able to be a starting DOG functioning at the level he is this year; he basically admitted as much.

The only thing that bothers me is that if your going to have a guy that makes mistake out there, might as well have the super talented freshman make them. Farley have been the worse performer, in my opinion, on this defense. Hate to say stuff like that on any player, but it's the truth from my perspective.

I was only going to post one's that we would really care about. Other's are nonsense of Stanford players possibly going to the draft.

BTW the game is at 7:00 PM EST on Saturday.

It says TBA on the first page and on the main board.

Also, I think this is the first time ND will be on Fox.

I literally cannot wait to hear Gus Johnson screaming "T....J.....Jones!" on a big TD reception.

For the physical portion of his position I agree. But when it comes to lining up the other DBs and he lines them up incorrectly/calls the wrong coverage and the CB gets beaten for a touchdown because he and the S are out of position, then that would be a huge issue.
