Probably Jaylons worst game. I actually felt bad for him. Idk if it was the position he was put in but he could not shed a block or was getting lo-jacked all game.

Despite not being able to shed a block, he still lead the team with 11 tackles, also had a TFL, a PBU, and 2 QBHs.

That one? Third and whatever distance was a first down...third and Montana, UL has this...

And what about the COACHING of the kickers and holders??

The COACHING of them.

Re the defense, I am more concerned re the fundamentally poor tackling, inability to get off blocks, all led by Kelly's idol, Chris Collinsworth.

Pretty sure Chris ran out of eligibility a LOOOOONG time ago. Could be wrong tho...

The player that bugged me the most, was Kelly's idol, Chris Collinsworth. Can the guy tackle, at all? He certainly can't cover.

he's playing with basically one arm. Go back and watch him after his scoop and score against NW, he could barely move his left side at all. I wouldn't be too harsh on him.

The weather these last two games cannot help recruiting.

It really is not ALWAYS this bad in November in South Bend.

And then the sea of red sitting in the season ticket area behind Louisville's bench.

That was more depressing than the game.

Cmon BGIf you know what I mean. Stats arent the whole story.

No, stats aren't the whole story. They don't show a young man playing a different position. They don't show him having to baby sit for 9 freshman. Or is it only 8. They don't show an All-American CB hasn't played all season. Or that the best CB that's eligible on the team played what little he did on a bad foot.

The stats don't show almost the entire veteran DLs on crutches on the sideline. Perhaps he "can't shed a block" because he has OLs that should be occupied on the LOS by veteran DL playing in their natural position.

ND's defense has people playing out of their normal position at on DL, LB, and Secondary.

Meanwhile UL's defense playing together all season as a cohesive unit gets rave reviews from ND fans while our kids get trashed.

It was a 3 point ball game. Reading the posts last night it sounded like we lost 30-0 and the other guys had a TD taken off the board.

I am glad there is no misunderstanding then. I can't understand his assignments last night.

What would it matter as far as the D is concerned whether it was 30-0 or 31-28?

Look forget the can't get off blocks, not getting penetration, etc., the biggest problem was missed tackles last night. It doesn't matter if they are freshmen, sophomores, or whatever (or collinsworth with one arm), tackling is the most basic part of the game and and stunk at it last night. Forget anything else, ND can't tackle and that makes two games in a row were ND has struggled tackling. Sugar coat it however you want but the fact remains if we could tackle worth a shit we would have won the game.

I think Redfield and Shumate should be starting. But all those critical of AC's tackling, the dude has his arm held on by limiting straps just to play out the season. One hit and it could fall right off. He looks like Farley last year. Not acceptable. #FreeMax

I think we lost this game mainly because front seven couldnt get off blocks and absolutely pathetic tackling across the board. Just finished watching the game again...holy smokes! Felt like the CW years. Missing FG's and settling for FG's in the red-zone disn't help much either.

Just watched the game and there is enough blame to go around. Several times the defense lost contain at the point of attack and it allowed the Dirty Birds to break a long one. That's a combination of poor coaching and youthfulness.

I won't try to defend BVG and his defensive schemes but more times than not, players were close in position to make the plays. A couple of things stuck out. One was simply poor execution on basic tackling. Haven't seen so many whiffs and arm tackling attempts in my life. Secondly, and it directly relates to the first one... the Irish do not have the athletes yet to consistently get to the point of contact, engage the offensive player, and drive them back. So many times, I see the Irish defender a half a step late and then try to make an arm tackle.

The bold is my biggest frustration with the team the past 2 weeks, we can't tackle. I can understand with all the young players in the game some blown assignments, or being slightly out of position or even struggling to get off the blocks, but ND has sucked the past 2 weeks at tackling.

Really? You weren't impressed with our duo of underrated 3 star Safeties? SEC bias.

LOL... I do think Tranquill played with a lot of heart. Poor guy just isn't athletic enough to make the plays at safety. I do think his future may be LB. Your best defensive backfield players are standing on the sidelines - which I don't know why - and we all know the KVR issue. The others on the field are the ones just not athletic enough to get it done.

The DL has no rush even though they got four sacks. Most were more mistakes by the Ville QB than an actual DL push. Injuries and depth obviously are hurting that. The LB corp is way behind right now and the loss of Schmidt was more costly than even I imagined.

I guess if I were taking anything from the last 3-4 games it would be the fact that some of these guys are getting experience that could pay off later on down the road. At least that's what I would hang my hat on moving forward. Otherwise, it is pretty hard to take right now for an Irish fan.

I understand what your saying and agree. He was getting trucked all night long up the middle because he's a not an ILB. That most definitely doesn't mean he's a bad player, it means he's out of place and they exposed that. Could the Dline do a better job of occupying Olineman of course but there is little reason for our early down scheme, IMO.

Collinsworth was horrible. He had to have at least 6 missed tackles.

He is clearly playing with 1 arm/shoulder right now. I actually commend him for trying but absolutely zero, literally zero, reasons he should be playing. Just one of many terrible coaching decisions.

Maybe the early down scheme was because we assumed that Petrino would sling the ball all over the field and find every excuse to throw the ball despite his inexperienced signal caller, like some other offensive geniuses do. But, he instead decided to run the ball with two very physical running backs and be happy with whatever advantage might keep the chains moving, keep our defense on the field, and ultimately win the game. Maybe we thought he would insist on playing his style of wide open football.

Exactly, that's the point. We got owned/out coached on the ground because of our stupid scheme. Also, giving up insane 3rd and longs.

Are you guys insinuating that coaches actually ride hot hands and don't get stuck in their tendencies? Because we quite clearly could have ridden our running game the last two games to protect our defense and shorten the games. #baffled
