With Denson available and seemingly on board, would Mccullough really make sense? I mean, if we don't bring on Denson and hire Mccullough instead, I suppose I get it. But it's not like Mccullough is this knockout recruiter or necessarily understands Notre Dame like Denson does.

If it's not an "either-or" scenario, then it makes even less sense to me. I mean, wouldn't you rather have Denson/Mccullough-insert defensive line coach than a Denson-Mccullough addition?

I'm sure that i'm missing something here. Help me out, fellas.

McCullough is a dynamite recruiter and has SE recruiting ties, not just florida. More of a track record coaching RBs. I assume Denson will get a job here eventually if he wants it just (maybe) not now.

A part of me is sceptical of McCullough. His main praise seems to come from the year IU's RB had last year. To me that seems like assuming RGIII's QB coach would be a good hire as well.

I am not against McCullough, but I would really hate for us to pass on Autry Denson.

+1. BRING BACK 80's/90's player please. I really think they would add alot to the program.

FWIW, before I watched MC's 247 interview, I wanted Denson over him as well. Now I'm not so sure. Seems like an energetic guy with a great story, plus he was an AD and principle. Seems demanding on his RBs, too, which I like. Would link but on my phone.

Do you think it may have to do with the offensive style that IU runs (up tempo) and MC would be a better fit in what Kelly wants to do next year?
Just spit balling.

I was admittedly one of the most critical posters on this site after learning of the coaching departures - especially considering the holes left by recruiting departures. IF Notre Dame can land Sanford on top of Lyght I'll be ecstatic. At this point I'd be happy with either one of Denson or McCullough. Maybe some day Bryant Young will find his way back to ND to coach up the DL. The coach that has me most excited is Sanford. IMO, this is the kind of guy that gets his feet wet for a season or two, then once BK bolts for the NFL, he slides right into the HC vacancy. He seems to have the right background and is very impressive in interviews. I know that's not all there is to being head coach at ND, but he's also proven himself as an OC from a production stand point. I hope they didn't jump the gun proclaiming him the next ND OC.

I think his overall background is something that appeals to the staff. As a player he only started his senior year in HS. He played with a chip on his shoulder and started all 4 years at Miami (OH). Then he made it to the NFL, had several knee injuries and always came back before going out on his own terms. His style is honest and demanding. Being a fan of Wichita State basketball, I loved it when he says he teaches his guys to "play angry". I was never 'locked in' more as a player than when I was playing pissed off - in any sport. We need more of that attitude at every position on the field.

How is he a dynamic recruiter? According to his profile, he's never landed a 4* recruit...

He's at Indiana. 3 star recruits are bonanzas there.

It's Indiana.

Then it's completely objective. You can't say a guy is a dynamic recruiter if there is no basis around it. He has never landed a blue chip player or beat out an elite recruiter for a prospect they really wanted. So what metric are you using for him being a good recruiter? I hope it's not perceived effort, because that's even more counterintuitive to him being an ace. As his hard work should have led to some better pickups or at least been in some major battles. I don't see that.

There is plenty of evidence that the guy can coach, but he certainly doesn't seem to be a recruiting expert.

No one was jumping up and down about Tony Alford's recruiting ability when he first came to ND after stops at Iowa St. and Louisville.

He did work wonders with Coleman. 7+ YPC the past two years and over 2000 yards this past year.

I dunno how you evaluate his ability as a recruiter for hypothetical blue chip battles but he did spot Coleman and identify his potential while the services rated him about the equivalent of Nicco Fertitta. So at least he got one right.

You mean like Denson? Who has he ever recruited? And McCullough was recruiting coordinator for IU leading to average B10 recruiting classes (awesome for them)

Loy doesn't expect it all to come out at once and believes that the first announcement will be next Monday.

I think the idea of adding former players from the '80s and '90s is very attractive for all of the reasons that have been mentioned above. However, my one fear would be that we would be hiring guys that make sense for all those reasons, but simply aren't as good of coaches as other options. In a sense, it would be like the "we have to hire a Michigan Man" type sentiment in Ann Arbor that has cost them in the past.

If McCullough is better, you go with him. Period. If Autry is better, then him. Personally I hope Autry is the better coach for selfish reasons so I can see him in Blue and Gold, but if Not? All aboard the McCullough train!

As much as I loved Autry as a player... he's not ready to coach at this level yet. Simple as that. I'm sorry.

One day... not today.

TA was a wr coach for Floyd's career iirc. Theo has turned into a legit NFL 3rd down back. Folston appears on his way.

You haven't said anything that is out of this world. ..As much as I love Floyd and Theo...its ND.....we should get players like that on our name alone. Alfords biggest recruit was Nix....Denson should be able to bring talent in like that on his reputation alone.

Until Notre Dame makes a commitment to running the ball in a pro-style offense, I doubt we'll be producing any 1st round RBs....
