They gave up a substantial sum to get Penner and his 4 mil cap hit. Very surprised about this trade - Teubert and a 1st? Not sure he's worth that much, but good on the Kings for doing something on this boring trade deadline day.
The Kings have quite a log jam of defensemen in the minors right now. Especially with Martinez doing so well, much sooner than anyone expected with the big club. Teubert has had some injury issues and didn't look like he would crack the top 6 d-men with the big club anytime soon.
The draft picks I think they can afford since they have spent the past 4 years building through the draft and stockpiling prospects. At this stage, 1 or 2 picks isn't going to make or break the Kings especially when this years' draft is looking to be sort of weak.
Even with the 4 mil cap hit, the Kings still have plenty of room to sign Doughty and Simmonds and still pursue other free agents in the summer. Handzus probably won't be kept and that is 4 million or so right there. Both goaltenders are locked up for a while and the core of the team is already on good contracts. Doughty will command a pretty good price (even though he is having a dip in his stats) and the Kings want to lock him up for as long as they can. Plus, Penner will only have one year after this one, so if he is a total bust, they aren't saddled with multiple years of misery.
They didn't give up any current roster players which is good. They kept top tier prospects (like Brayden Schenn) and they gave up a player that was in a position that currently has a good surplus. Don't get me wrong, I don't know if Penner is the great pick up everyone is thinking he is, but I don't think it was too expensive. It fills a need without damaging the core.
