Did you guys catch the First Take piece about this?
First Take Discusses A Woman's Responsibility To Avoid Being Beaten
Even other ESPN people are appauled:

This is a perfect example of how ridiculous the "embrace debate" bullshit is. For the sake of having "debate" Smith comes in with a ridiculous hot take that absolutely nobody can get behind. He looks like a jackass, ESPN looks stupid, but ESPN is going to get a weeks worth of "echo chamber" programming off of their talking heads weighing in on statement by their own analysts, and reporting the "news" about what ESPN is going to do with him. Fuck this whole thing.

Maybe like with his, "n***a please" remark, he and espn can again claim he just didn't say it.

I don't think anyone is shocked that it happens. Like you said, this is a violent game and it encourages the men who play it to be violent in the ring. Some will struggle to prevent that from bleeding into real life.
I think it's more disappointment in the degree to which the sport looks the other way/makes excuses/enables this stuff. And it's not just the NFL. I mean, Bob Stoops, allegedly a class act, just signed up Dorial Green-Beckham. What message does that send?

That's why I said I can't imagine trying to manage that freak show. I'd bet the commissioner thinks a lot of the stuff the players get away with is bullshit just like we do. I'm sure if it were entirely up to him, he'd kick some guys out of the league. Problem is he's got owners to please, a union to deal with, lawyers of every kind for and against everything he does. The HR issues in the NFL are like nothing else.

Is this as thinly veiled of a PR attempt as it looks, or is this in line with how the guy normally interacts with fans? Seems like he's trying to win people over in anticipation of whatever punishments do or don't get handed down.

I mean, this is a scene straight out of American Gangster when he starts handing out turkeys because the cops are picking up on how corrupt he is, but, like was pointed out earlier, I have zero ties to the situation or Indy so it could just be a nice gesture by an owner.

I listened to it. I'm not sure what people expected him to say. The NFL should have never let him go on the air because the dude couldn't say anything that either: a) admitted the NFL messed up or b) answered the questions directly.

If shows = games, Stephen A Smith just got a tougher punishment than Rice did:

Does anyone think Gordon wins his appeal? I had no idea the NFL testing threshold was so low (it's lower than a third of what the government tests its employees at). Does the backlash over comparing suspensions with Ray Rice factor in?

I'm not familiar with the NFL appeal process. Is this when we'll know for sure if Gordon's suspension stands, or is that separate?

Aldon Smith needs some help.

Why is Goodell meeting with Brent? Didn't he retire or something last year?

Why is Goodell meeting with Brent? Didn't he retire or something last year?

Criminal record[edit]
Brent pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence on June 2, 2009, as a result of an incident from the previous February. He was sentenced to two years probation and 60 days in jail. He was also fined and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.[10]

On December 8, 2012, Brent was charged with intoxication manslaughter in Irving, Texas, after a motor vehicle accident in which he was the driver killed his teammate, Jerry Brown.[11] Police documents showed that Brent was driving at least 110 mph and may have been driving as fast as 134 mph right before the crash,[12] on a road where the posted speed limit was 45 mph.[13] Brent later failed a sobriety test and would face 2 to 20 years in prison if convicted.[14] Brent was found by the police pulling out his friend and teammate. Jerry Brown's mother begged the Cowboys to keep Brent as a teammate and not forget him.[15]

On December 26, 2012, a grand jury indicted Brent on one count of intoxication manslaughter.[16]

On May 24, 2013, the Dallas district attorney requested to revoke Brent's bail for not adhering to the monitoring conditions and send him to jail to await trial. The judge denied the request and ordered additional forms of monitoring.[17]

Then, on June 27, 2013, he was sent back to jail after it was revealed that he had failed a drug test on June 19. Before this, he had also failed another drug test in late May, testing positive for marijuana both times.[18] He was released from jail due to a court order on July 7, 2013.

On January 24, 2014, Josh Brent was found guilty of intoxication manslaughter in the death of Jerry Brown and sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years probation.[19][20]

he was playing for Mean Machine..

NFL considering tougher penalties for future domestic violence cases, including possible one-year ban - The Washington Post

“We need to have stricter penalties,” said one person with knowledge of the league’s deliberations on the matter. “I think you will see that. I believe the commissioner and others would like to see stricter penalties. We need to be more vigilant.”

That person said Goodell and the league “tried to stick with precedent” from previous NFL disciplinary measures when deciding on the length of Rice’s suspension.

“A lot of us were disturbed by what we saw” in the Rice case, the person said. “I think you will see something in probably the next few weeks. A first offense could be four to six games, definitely more than two. A second offense might be a year.”

Do you think either miss games? Bell might need to worry about his legal issues first, but I'd think Blount would be more concerned with Goodell, especially if they stand by the Gordon suspension.
