With the news of Ray Rice only getting a 2 game suspension for upercutting his fiancee, I just wondered what the board's thoughts were on how the NFL handles player conduct and what their priorities should be when enforcing their policies.

To me, if it's about "protecting the shield" then they've completely lost their compass. Josh Gordon is losing a year for weed and Pryor lost 5 games for violating NCAA rules before he was even a professional, but Rice misses fewer games than both and Irsay may never be punished for his DUI arrest.

Their enforcement policy just seems completely off to me, but what do you think? Also, feel free to discuss players currently in hot water with the league.

Plaxico suspended 4 games for shooting himself.

Rice fined $58K... Joe Horn was fined $30K for using a cell phone during a TD celebration.

There are a ton of examples...these are just a few I saw posted on twitter.

I think that Rice's fine is larger in reality because I don't believe that he gets paid for the 2 games that he misses. I believe that he is suppose to make 4 million this year so he would miss out on 500,000 in pay as well. I still think it is too light and should have been a 4 game suspension.

The PFT guy was on the DP show. He said there is a tape of the actual punch that knocked her out that hasn't been circulated. He suggested that on that tape it shows his fiance attacking him and him talking it until he decides he's had enough and lays her out with one shot. In no way am I supporting what he's done. But he suggested that along with this being a first offense as the reason it was short.

I think it was too light. In terms of the "cost to him", I'm sort of in this camp:
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>The two game suspension will cost Ray Rice holy shit I can't believe anyone cares about the money after watching that video</p>— Spencer Hall (@edsbs) <a href="https://twitter.com/edsbs/statuses/492333550935764993">July 24, 2014</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Edit: but, in fairness, this is the number:
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Total money lost for Ray Rice on fine & 2-game suspension: $528,588.24</p>— darren rovell (@darrenrovell) <a href="https://twitter.com/darrenrovell/statuses/492324615356944384">July 24, 2014</a></blockquote>

I agree that it should have been longer but as a first time offender he wasn't going to get more than 4 games (which is what I think he should have gotten).

He will. I don't understand why some people claim this. It took Ray Rice this long to hear about his punishment and his incident happened in February, while Irsay's took place in March.

Jim Irsay's arrest.

Ray Rice's arrest.

I agree that the NFL has problems with how they handle incidents, but let's not make claims like that. The other owners are very embarrassed by Irsay's arrest and I heard that they nearly took away the team last time he was having these problems.

On another note: Aldon Smith has still not been punished. I cannot fathom why this hasn't been handled yet, unless the NFL is just waiting for him to finish his spree of idiotic behavior.

I've just been going off the coverage national outlets have given the Irsay incident, but I'm not close to Indy at all so you could be spot on.

The bolded surprised me though. Was it a similar type of incident? Any talk of that happening now.

Also, the Aldon Smith thing is ridiculous. They may just be hoping he retires before they have to handle it.

The national outlets have to go with the stories that get the most clicks etc. "NFL WON'T PUNISH OWNER FOR DUI" sells more than "NFL SPENDS AN AWFULLY LONG TIME WAITING TO PUNISH ANYBODY WHO IS ARRESTED". Plenty of people were concerned and it was an issue around Indy when Brazil or whatever the guy's name is was cut for testing positive again for an illegal substance. Irsay will get punished, but I have zero idea what it will be. I've heard anything from a 1 mill fine and multiple games suspended to half a season.

As for the bolded: Well, it's not like I heard from Schefter or have the Maras on speed dial. I was just told that the NFL was very concerned that something like this may happen.

Yeah, the Aldon Smith thing makes me wonder if the NFL thinks that he'll just continue to do stupid things even after his punishment.

Even if his fiance went after him...the dude is a fucking nfl running back. Look at how jacked he is, im pretty sure he could restrain her without knocking her out lol. This suspension is ridiculous, getting caught smoking weed a few times is a whole season and this is 2 games. SMDH

The NFL is a joke and the owners are idiots. They have their puppet Goodell ruining everything. I'm starting to grow out of this league, and this is a big reason why.

Let that he a lesson to the kids out there: if you want to commit a crime, make sure it's something harmless like driving drunk or beating a woman.

Told to me by an Indy sports talk radio host.......Polian was hired away from the Panthers to run the Colts at the request of the NFL. At that time Irsay was having drug problems. He got caught up in a sting the FBI had ran on some pharmacy's that were handing out drugs for money with fake scripts. Irsay was basically given an ultimatum, let the NFL bring Polian in or face the possibility of losing the team. You would have to wonder why Polian would leave a team he just took to the SB.

Rice got off easy. The NFL should be embarrassed.

That's how it was explained to me I just wasn't told all the details. Thanks man.

Meanwhile, guys like Michael Sam and Manti Te'o, even Louis Nix, fall in the draft because they might create "a distraction."

Olbermann annoys me but he just brought up how when Albert Haynesworth stomped that guy on the field he got 5 games. Rice hits a defenseless woman and gets 2...

Coachman was on Mike & Mike, and he said he'd be 100% with everyone saying the punishment was too light if he could see what happened in the elevator so that there was no chance he was accusing Rice of something that didn't happen.

I've been to quite a few casinos, and I assume everything is on tape. Has there been any explanation of how there's no video of what happened in the elevator? I mean we all got to enjoy watching Jay-Z get slapped by Beyonce's sister.

From what I've heard, they have the video of him punching her after she started hitting him. Since it was his first offense and he was technically assaulted first, he was given only a 2 week suspension. Now he's obviously still a lot bigger than his now wife, but he didn't just go HAM, he was "defending" himself. (Quotes because I doubt the then fiancée really could've hurt Rice)

There are a lot of people playing in the NFL who'd probably be convicts if they didn't have the career they have. There are also a lot of kids sitting in colleges across the country who read at about a sixth grade level, but they can play football.

It's a violent game played to entertain millions and it makes billions. I can't imagine trying to manage the biggest freak show on earth.

Not trying to make excuses for these low life players/criminals or the money hungry NFL, but I don't think anyone should act shocked about this stuff.

I don't think anyone is shocked that it happens. Like you said, this is a violent game and it encourages the men who play it to be violent in the ring. Some will struggle to prevent that from bleeding into real life.
I think it's more disappointment in the degree to which the sport looks the other way/makes excuses/enables this stuff. And it's not just the NFL. I mean, Bob Stoops, allegedly a class act, just signed up Dorial Green-Beckham. What message does that send?
