Look I know with technology there are a lot more cameras at the games now. Sitting at home we get to see it 6 different ways in 30 seconds and slowed down. But something has to change with the Refs. They are literally costing teams games.

No to beat a dead horse, but I wanted to resurrect this thread because I have a very legitimate question that has been bothering me more each week that goes by.

Conference officials - What is the process in which they are graded for their performance? Just like any employee, I have to imagine that after every game, an ACC governing body reviews their performance and grades them out. When they do well, what happens? they get to keep their job? They get a bonus? When they do poorly, do they get fined? Do they get pulled from a game? A slap on the wrist?

I'm asking a legit question here! I genuinely would love to know how this works due to some recent blunders. And this is just one crew. Imagine what happens across 50+ other games in a weekend.

one of the benefits they get from being well graded is post season assignments. Other than that I am not sure.

Great questions! Whatever the ACC does in this regard it isn't working. They are the worst in college football.

And I just want to add that I don't expect even the best officials to be perfect. Things are happening in real time, and catching every penalty, or non penalty has to be difficult. However, we all know there are moments when you scratch your head and say "what are they doing?" These are the moments that make me wonder about my initial question. I think I once heard that after a game Brian Kelly would send in a list of complaints to be reviewed in hopes that it would improve the conference officiating moving forward. If so, are the complaints taken seriously, or thrown in the nearest trash receptacle?

I‘ve read/heard there is a real shortage of refs in many state for HS football……I’m wondering if we’re seeing that cause issues with the quality of the officials in college. Maybe not getting the cream of the crop, so to speak, since the overall number of potential candidates appears to have decreased. It is pretty frustrating to see so many poor calls which is highlighted by all the reviews and ability for us fans to see the replays so clearly from many different camera angles.

My frustration w/ college is where they have the Umpire line up. Dude is always in the way & can easily adversely affect a lay over the middle. I don’t believe NFL has their Umpires stationed in the middle of the defense but correct me if I’m wrong. I get why he’s there b/c of the great view but dude needs to be the best athlete of the crew just to have a chance to get out of the way.

NFL umpire is behind the line of scrimmage on the opposite side of the Referee. I think he goes back to the old side under 2 mins of the half. But I could be wrong on the second part.

I just uncovered this nugget from the South Bend Tribune. What did the ACC office tell Notre Dame football about improper replay review at Duke?

“They owned it and said it shouldn’t have been reviewed,” Freeman said of the ACC. “We appreciate the honesty. What can you do now? the game’s over.”

“There’s conversations I have with the referees before the game,” Freeman said. “Probably not before they called it, but afterwards, (a) discussion of, ‘What did you see? This is what we do on field goal.’

“Then you turn in plays for interpretation every week: why this was called or why wasn’t it called so we can continue to learn too. Sometimes they say, ‘Hey, we got it wrong,’ and sometimes they say, ‘No, we got it right. Here’s what you need to understand.’ “

The key, Freeman said, is to maintain that communication and keep it respectful.

“We’re all trying to continuously grow from this and learn,” he said. “Nobody’s perfect. Referees aren’t perfect. We’re not perfect. To me it’s making sure we have a clear understanding of what you’re going to enforce and what you’re looking for.”

The OS penalties were weird to the point that I wonder if Duke saw something on film and alerted the refs before the game. I can’t remember ND being called for having their CB offsides. Bothello I could see but the camera angle was definitive for tv viewers so I could only assume he was lined up in the neutral zone.

It sounds ridiculous to say, but watching these games it really does feel like the fix is in against ND this year (maybe pressure to join a conference?) - I watch a lot of CFB and I haven’t seen a team be on the wrong side of so many calls like ND this year.

- Ford gets knocked out cold against TN State with clear targeting. No call, not even a review.
- ND player gets ejected for targeting in the same game, reviewed and upheld despite clear indication of the hit to the shoulder pad.
- Botehlo’s targeting call against Duke. By definition he led with his helmet and it’s targeting, but you can call 5-10 of those per game (someone posted an image of two Duke players simultaneously making the same type of tackle).
- Punt reviewed and overturned even though you literally can’t review it. Nice of the officials to admit it after the fact, but doesn’t do us any good.
- One play, there was a generous Duke spot by a yard or two. Official walks over and respots the ball even closer to the sticks for them.

And plenty others that I’ve forgotten. These are calls that absolutely decide games. When officials are bad all-around, you expect close to a 50-50 split of bad calls on each side, but it feels like it’s been 90-10 against ND this season.

It's not just ND. The officiating throughout college football is awful.

Not sure why anyone in their right mind would want to be a ref. Seems like a terrible gig.

I believe that NFL officiating is usually taken on by guys with occupations related to sports a good bit of the time. We had an NFL official from WMU while I taught there who was an athletic department administrator (at relatively low level) --- you guys might remember him --- Ron Winter. He told me that he loved doing the work. He was a marine boot camp type serious dude and in stud shape. Sometimes difficult to talk to --- VERY serious. I think that he liked the extra cash, but it was the involvement in the game that motivated him.

I imagine that college reffing is one step down from that, but these guys must largely be motivated by loving involvement with the game. I'll bet that they feel more alive doing the job than they do any other times in their lives.

As to high school reffing --- in the areas where I lived those were ALWAYS random guys "from down the block/ next town over" types. That ALWAYS was horrible --- if the guy was actually nice, the rabids chewed him up. Only the hardasses survived. In basketball a lot of them were petty tyrants who seemed to enjoy ruling you a "their" games.
