Just a hunch based on gut instinct. Kirby Smart finally gets a head coaching job. Muschamp goes back to coach with Saban like he did at LSU.Saban picks up another head coaching reject.

I assumed Smart was holding out for UGA or 'Bama. But I could see him going elsewhere too. But it's also why I said the best thing.

I don't understand why that is so far fetched...

I think it's unlikely BVG is axed after one year, there will be other HC jobs open, there will be SEC DC jobs open like A&M and maybe Bama if Smart finally takes a job, and ND assistant salaries aren't competitive. I'm not saying it's impossible but it does seem a little like a pipe dream

I agree. It's highly unlikely but you never know. This defense was historically bad and just absolutely horrendous. While I think it's more likely they make minor staff changes and chalk this season up to injuries, a quality defensive minded guy like Muschamp doesn't come available often.

Yes, I'd classify it as a pipe dream but sometimes dreams do get answered!

A big obstacle to hiring Muschamp is that Kelly has for the most part only hired coaches he is familiar with and has some sort of connection or history with.

You do? I don't. BVG might have the gig one more year? I'm telling you, John Tenuta used to be the worse I've ever seen...BVFG doesn't stop blitzing.

Champ needs a job and can do better than my mother.

Maybe Kelly needs some coaches on his staff that aren't from his coaching tree. It isn't always good to surround yourself with your "boys". Maybe no one on the staff will offer a dissenting opinion because a good amount have been with him for quite awhile.

There are about 5-10 coaches ND could rather easily get that I don't feel would be a significant downgrade from Kelly. And then there are "reach" candidates that I think would be possible but not definite that we could get, and possibly an upgrade over Kelly.

If Charlie Strong can bring his strict philosophy into Texas and win, I will be certain that ND could become champions once again.

They went 6-6, and looked terrible doing it. I think Strong will do great things there, but wouldn't compare 2014's incarnation of Texas to something good.

Be careful, BK is pretty damn good...

This would be my guess:

(Long Shots)
Stoops
Gruden
Meyer

(Realistic Possibilities)
Patterson
Shaw
Mora
Dantonio
Anderson
Pinkel

Packers offensive coordinator Tom Clements (former ND QB) would also be in the conversation.

Hah that article is staying in the hopper until Kelly leaves...

Here are the guys I don't think would be significant downgrades from Kelly that I'm fairly sure we could get with minimal effort: Andersen, Wittingham, McElwain (just a case of money and paying that buyout), Addazio, Paul Johnson, Ken Niumatolo, Narduzzi... none of these guys would be hard at all to get.

Then "reach" candidates... Gruden, Patterson, Mullen, Sumlin, Malzahn, and many others are unreasonable unless we want to open the wallet and get wild.

Those would be my first two choices I think.

Clements is incredibly intriguing but I'm not sure if he really has enough college experience.

Patterson isn't a reach and would be an upgrade

Not sure how I feel about him but Dan Mullen was a grad assistant at Notre Dame. My feelings on Mullen are kind of neutral. I think he is a good coach but doesn't get me jumping out of my seat.

Helllll yeah. I mean why not? He gets it done with GT athletes.

His defenses at GT have typically been awful despite the fact his offense dominates time of possession. More often than not you need an elite D to win a championship.

Your avatar is fine its just that we lost 2 starting cb's, one LB, 2 replacement LBs, 2 starting safeties, and 2 starting DLinemen. Don't care who is coaching ,even Belechick, this is tough to overcome.

Belichick beats Northwestern with a goddamn women's softball team.

No coach will ever win here when Bamas players are never once bothered with homework, are encouraged to roid while given Cadillacs , all while the ncaa does nothing... Most uneven playing field in sports in the entire planet.

I'd take Gruden and be excited about it, but I'm hesitant to name him the #1 considering how long he's been out of football, and also no college HC experience.

He'd be the only one I'd feel comfortable with...
