I could be off on this but just a thought. Could the buyout issue be affected by the search for a basketball coach as well?
-they still have to pay Brey and departing staff any guaranteed money left on the contract, and I believe Brey is still owed quite a bit
-the possibility they will have to pay the buyout of the incoming coach. plus salary, plus new staff and the finances attached to them

That's a lot of money at one time. Again just a thought.

Now back to speculating on things no one knows truly anything about!

Parker would be underwhelming on paper, but honestly not sure how he can be judged by what happened at WVU. Neal Brown called the plays for most of those two seasons. Parker called the plays for 6 games to end 2021 and they went 4-2 and averaged 27/game. Prior to that, they averaged 20.8/game. (I’m excluding their game against Long Island where they won 66-0). His first season at WVU in 2020 (not as a playcaller) the offense averaged ~90 yards more per game than in 2019. Freeman worked with him and wanted him here. He was gameplanning closely with Rees and clearly based on the pics we saw of Ludwig it seems like he’s been part of the OC process and probably was going be the “#2” guy here next season if we had landed Ludwig.

Again, underwhelming on paper but if he’s the OC I’m not automatically writing him off. Not sure he can at all fairly he judged by his time at WVU.

I just beg Parker to not try to be the smartest guy in the room. Please don't outsmart yourself. Please make sensible calls based on down and distance and scouting reports.

IF we have a dominant running game a lot of guys can look like geniuses. MF’s o line coach hire will determine a lot.

On the positive side of things, there is plenty of talent to work with here across the offense. I’m willing to give whoever they give the seat to a fair shake.

Nothing wrong with this hire IMO. Has some experience calling plays. Played QB, has coached QBs. Has even coached TEs. Better resume for an OC over Parker.

Just cant fathom ND is arrogant enough to hire Parker after everything went down.

ISD did say that Brey leaving is causing a crunch in available cash (but this is stupid)

The guys on the II pod had a good point when they said that even if it were Parker, the offense would prob be really good this year with Hartman, Fisher, Alt and more experienced WR's They questioned the 2nd year, though.

And of course, none of them thought he'd be hired, either.

I much more ok with this if Parker is not the OC. And I feel like we would have gone with a more established QB coach if we had Parker at OC.

He was passing game coordinator.

Yes which is a nice title. Longo is OC and QBs Coach.

It’s more accurate to view this as he was UCs QBs Coach, got a shot at OC, wasn’t good, and is now our QB Coach. That’s fine. It is also clear though he wasn’t going to coach QBs at his next stop till this.

HEAR ME OUT --

Jon Gruden Redemption Tour.

EDIT: Or the other Gruden? Jay Gruden - Wikipedia
Sins of the brother.
I understand at least giving Parker a look, but you mean to tell me we're just going to give up on looking for the next great OC somewhere in here? College Football Team Total Offense Stats 2022
Random Names I’ll throw out:
JMU HC Curt Cignetti
KU OC Andy Kotelnicki
Oregon State OC Brian Lindgren
Memphis OC Tim Cramsey
Sneaky Pete’s kid
North Texas HC Eric Morris (former Wazzu OC)

Or we can stop acting like a mid program and just hire the fucking OC our HC wants.
Respectfully, this is such an unrealistic expectation completely devoid of how it actually works. And, it just removes all responsibility of Marcus Freeman to actually do his job. When was the last time Brian Kelly had the BOT buyout 5-6M in contracts for a coordinator hire? He still won a lot of games.

Did Bama hire Saban's #1 OC option? No, they didn't. They hired like his 5th or 6th. They likely could have, if they "really" wanted too, right? I mean, just pay the person whatever they wanted, right? Everyone has that price. Or reality says, no program hires their #1 option at all times. Because usually those guys aren't available within reason. Ludwig wasn't available within reason. It should be, "on to the next". Not, "on to the last".

When all this started, the newly tight-lipped Gug made sure to leak that Freeman had spoken with 20-30+ candidates and that this position was extremely coveted. Where the fuck are those candidates? Where is all this interest?

We went from that to (possibly) hiring Parker and along the way... We only get 2 candidates on campus, not even speaking with other "qualified" candidates that made many peoples list, and all the while the BOT/Swarbrick only shot down ONE/SINGLE candidate. Take the beloved Freeman out of the equation and this does not add up. So, were we fed BS on the interest of the job? Did he not really talk with that many candidates? I mean, we do know that he never reached out to Joe Moorehead. We're on the verge of hiring fucking Gerad Parker as the OC to Notre Dame and Joe Moorehead didn't even get 1 of 20+ calls? And that is somehow on Jack?

This reaction is fucking absurd. The reaction the fanbase/beat writers are taking is less grounded in reality than not paying an obscene buyout for the OC nobody knew about 3 weeks ago.
