It's a big boy game. ND doesn't really want to play or doesn't realize what is required to play.

That is, if he's great, you pay whatever it takes. If he's not great, why are you considering him the 1st place?

Like the Katy Perry song: "you don't really want to stay....you don't really want to go-oh'

Just asking questions….

If it was ND and the buyout, why were we waiting Sunday and Monday for Ludwig to meet with Whittingham?

Is that part of the timeline not seem off to anyone?

I have the same immediate deflating reaction, but upon thinking about it a little bit, does it make sense to pay a millions of dollars buyout for guy who's 58 and might retire soon? How many years could we expect him to be at ND? If it meant winning a championship in the next 2 years, yeah I think it'd be worth it, but how high is that probability? Perhaps this wasn't the best choice for the long term stability of the program.

The buyout was known prior to flying him in and giving him red carpet treatment for two days!

Would you rather spend $4mil on a couple WRs or an OC?
Not really a comparison because we knew we weren't paying for players and now we know we won't pay for coaches either. The admin would probably rather spend it on assistant secretaries for the admissions staff.

I actually agree, assuming ND actually does hire someone worthwhile.

I don’t think Ludwig and Harding are some $6 million dollar combo.

It rests on you actually still nail the hire, which grows less and less likely. It is also fundamentally not good for ND Admin & Freeman’s relationship.

As I said before, something is definitely amiss.

The offer, the counter, the contract details, or the reporting. Things aren’t adding up.

The only way I can think this mess sort of made sense, was that Jack or somebody on the BoT had a discussion with MF about budgetary matters. Maybe MF came to the conclusion after that that he didn’t want to spend probably over $5mil for 2 years on a 58 year old coach. Maybe MF liked Ludwig well enough to offer him the job, but not so much that he may sacrifice longer term stability by splurging millions on him.

I don’t know. I’m just spitballing.

This is why BK split. Straight up. He wanted to win and he needed a program that wanted to win. Notre Dame is not that program.
Correct, the stars might align and they have a run here and there...but they'll never be a UGA, Bama, OSU or even LSU. The landscape changed in the early 2000s, ND still thinks they are in the 1940s. It's actually a shame, but it is what it is.

Plenty of gas left in the tank at 58.

Has anybody seen this reported by anyone other than Thamel or somebody crediting Thamel? I know he's usually pretty spot on but this one just smells funny. No way in hell ND brings the man in knowing his buyout, wines and dines him, wastes a weekend of his life, as well as a weekend of their HC’s life just to embarrass themselves and their young head coach on a national stage. Either Thamel is flat out wrong, or he is right about the outcome, but wrong about why. Even leadership at ND is not incompetent enough to trip on their own dicks like this.

Rittenberg and FootballScoop

FootballScoop is the one saying buyouts total almost $4 million, which includes an apparent $1 million roughly then for an OL Coach. That’s why I think if anything this could have broken down at the inclusion of Harding.

Freeman's definitely going to leave the first chance he gets to go to a quality program that will pay the coaches and play the NIL game. I won't blame him.

So 3 mil in buyouts is too much for two important coaches??? Hard to even care if that’s how serious they are about taking this shit serious

I would respect ND had they not even entertained him as a candidate citing his outrageous buyout. But to do the dog and pony show and THEN cite an outrageous buyout? I guess ND gonna ND...

Go read Dale's post. He is 100% correct right. Something seems off here. They knew the buyout so what changed?

I don't think the whole story is known yet.

My first question was questioning thamels sources. So far it's seemed like everything coming out has been ND leaked.
