five star receiversBrian Hartline has called as many plays as everyone on this board. I really don’t get the infatuation with him at this point.

Nah, no one really thinks that.... we believe we should start landing five stars with ease regardless of who the coach is,........................People don’t actually believe we would suddenly start landing 5 star WRs with ease if Hartline was here right?
.628 winning percentage and 2 MAC Championships since 2016. Is he underachieving relative to the rest of the conference, Matt Campbell or other G5 schools?Moorhead is the only one who’s landed a 5 star QB.
I know nothing of Candle offensively, the handicap on him is he’s underachieved given the resource advantage at Toledo, but that may speak to his HC ability more.
I would still choose Johnson, even if it’s one year, but would love two.
But Freeman doesn't need a home run recruiter as an OC we got Freeman for that and all the position coaches. We need someone at OC that will balance Freeman's lack of offensive prowess. The list we have been hearing does exactly that and is very impressive by any standard. The first priority from what we have been hearing is play calling experience. If thats the case Hartline wouldn't even get a call.five star receivers
people thought we should use GAs as our QB coach so yes im sure people think this.People don’t actually believe we would suddenly start landing 5 star WRs with ease if Hartline was here right?
Somebody has to be fifth on a list of five.I think Lewis is my #1 as well. Just curious though why are you so down on Candle?
One of the beat reporters said being able to go tempo is on the list of preferred traits.I have a hard time seeing Lewis being viable. Its predicated on tempo. Are we sure Freeman wants the offense to have that much pace?
I don't know that I would go this far. If they vet him and hire him, so be it, but he's a more viable candidate right now than names like Mullen, Herman and Hartline. That I know and that's what's most important.I'll take anybody but Candle

Re: the "power 5 coordinator mystery candidate"
ND has supposedly talked to 24+ candidates and I have only seen maybe like 12 names put out by the media. Therefore, tons of "mystery candidates" are out there and I'm sure at least one of them is a power 5 coordinator.
For sure, my point is just that throwing in a "mystery candidate" to that article doesn't really mean much. Our just some people that aren't options.
I could be misremembering this, but I thought Freeman said during his HC acceptance presser or one of his media appearances shortly after, that he wanted to be aggressive in all phases of the game. And, I remember thinking this means Tommy is going to open up the offense with Buch at QB. So, how much of last years offense was Freeman's vision for the offense and how much of it was based on personnel?I have a hard time seeing Lewis being viable. Its predicated on tempo. Are we sure Freeman wants the offense to have that much pace?
His mentor and sounding board is Jim Tressel the proper antithesis of being aggressive in any phase of the game. I wouldn't put any stock in what MF said on this topic.I could be misremembering this, but I thought Freeman said during his HC acceptance presser or one of his media appearances shortly after, that he wanted to be aggressive in all phases of the game. All questions that I think this hire and the subsequent events that follow will be very interesting to track.
Agreed. Candle, Lewis, Moorhead all have that HC experience like Golden does. Freeman has barely a dozen games coached as an HC.I don't really like Candle, but we're kidding ourselves that it's not a homerun taking a 2 time MAC winning head coach to be your OC. Probably just a valuable perspective like Golden to have outside of simply being OC, too.
Well his ST’s are very aggressive so I don’t think that’s relevant to everything. His mentor and sounding board is Jim Tressel the proper antithesis of being aggressive in any phase of the game. I wouldn't put any stock in what MF said on this topic.

So because Tressel ran a conservative offense, and MF speaks with Tressel, MF is full of it?
That makes no sense, especially considering how aggressive Freeman's defenses were.

He definitely said something along those lines, Lucky. And consequent words and actions have seem to indicate that's what he'd like to do.I could be misremembering this, but I thought Freeman said during his HC acceptance presser or one of his media appearances shortly after, that he wanted to be aggressive in all phases of the game. Notre Dame offensive coordinator search: Report on vetted candidates
The question surrounding Notre Dame football this offseason went from \fightingirishwire.usatoday.com
Agreed and aggressive doesn't have to mean tempo. I should have included that in my previous postMF has said numerous times dominating the line on both sides is what he is shooting for. We have seen it before where dominant running can be run out of spread and tempo. Lewis does run a fair bit and loves pulling two lineman on seemingly most plays. I just wasn't sure if MF wants to go that fast. Very few teams do and of the ones that do, I don't think any of them have stout defenses. Time will tell.
