The Miami 247 site is saying Candle isn't taking the Miami job because he wants the ND job. Yet the ND site isn't talking about him much. Lewis supposedly wants it. Johnson seems very interest. Moorhead would take it offered. Ludwig is down.

Are there multiple "first choice" type coaches interested in leaving to come to South Bend? Who am I rooting for? I must be in the upside down.

If Jason Candle, Sean Lewis, Brian Johnson, and Andy Ludwig all want it, who do you take?

I think the 2023 offense has a lot of people interested. Biggest question mark is the wide receiver room, and I don’t even think that’s much of a question mark.

I would say Ludwig is the safest choice. Would probably be my pick for this year. Lewis and Johnson are the potential grand slams. Would have loved them last yr. Hard pass on Candle.

Moorhead is the only one who’s landed a 5 star QB.

I know nothing of Candle offensively, the handicap on him is he’s underachieved given the resource advantage at Toledo, but that may speak to his HC ability more.

I would still choose Johnson, even if it’s one year, but would love two.

Lewis
Ludwig
Johnson
Moorhead
Candle

Make the hire for right now. Don't worry about who might leave and when. Leave that to the fans. We'll take care of it.
I think Lewis is my #1 as well. Just curious though why are you so down on Candle?

Moorhead is the only one who’s landed a borderline 5 star QB.
Over all his years he has landed 4-4 star recruits the rest were 3 and 2 star guys and that's with being at Oregon who cheats, Penn state and Miss State in the SEC.

“Whittingham confesses now that he was a little premature in putting Johnson at that position (OC) at that time, but such was his confidence in his prodigy, which has been confirmed in the years since then. The Utes struggled on offense that season, so a year later Whittingham coaxed Dennis Erickson, the hugely successful former college and NFL head coach, to serve as co-coordinator with Johnson and to mentor him. The offense struggled again the following season, and in the offseason Whittingham hired another OC and returned Johnson to quarterback coach.”

This is a little concerning. Although to be fair, Brian Johnson was only 25 yo at the time.

That was 10 years ago

ND has come a long way to have the pick of the litter to select an OC.
Sure have, the pay is there, prestige, and roster. You gotta think working for MF is a big plus. From the outside ND is definitely trending upwards. The right hire could make 2023 a special season.

I think for some of these OC candidates the fact that Freeman is from the defensive side of the ball is actually a plus. It means full autonomy.

ah if they truly had the pick they'd be calling up Brian Hartline or somebody like that and getting him in for an interview
I think some of these candidates are more ready than Hartline and just as good. OSU is a Top 5 program. ND is not going to be able to pluck out an OC from a Top 5 program unless they win a Natty.

Brian Hartline has huge potential. But he is tiers away from Lewis, Ludwig, or Candle as a coordinator hire. He has never called a play in his life and those other guys have crushed defenses to varying degrees for years. Ryan Day can take a chance on him because he is an offensive guy and he can spend his time on that side of the ball with Knowles running the defense.

Why would Brian Hartline leave OSU for a lateral position?

That’s why emphasis has been placed on play calling experience. I don’t feel like MF has enough confidence in his own abilities as a play caller. So I’m ok with him having veto power over plays, and being a defensive coach hiring someone he can trust to run the offense.

Maybe I didn't have enough caffeine yet this morning, but this confused me lol

Are you saying all of them want the OC job?

Especially when he has Ryan Day to help him along. If he came to ND having never called a play, with a Defensive head coach. That’s way too much risk for both sides

I have a hard time seeing Lewis being viable. Its predicated on tempo. Are we sure Freeman wants the offense to have that much pace?
