I think he was better when his program was still grass roots and on Youtube, and then he went corporate with the FanDuel money and eventually ESPN. He does take really good care of his guys who have been with him from the beginning which is neat. He was very generous when he got that bag from FD.

He's certainly divisive, people either love him or hate him. I like him personally but totally understand why some people would find him outrageous and annoying.

Pat is a hammer being used as a screwdriver. He can be funny in small doses and has an interesting perspective as a former punter who was around high end football. I think he should've only been the crowd guy for college gameday who does stunts with the crowd, interviews whatever celebrity fan they have around, does the kick competition stuff, etc. He should have as much airtime as the peloton girl they've wheeled out. Putting him on the desk is way too much exposure.

It certainly seems to be working with viewership reportedly at all-time highs since hiring Pat. Then you have the desperate, copy-cat hire from Big Noon Kickoff with Dave fucking Portnoy. Pathetic.

Yeah I think it's just a different market. I want a show that talks about football with some stupid/fun stuff for entertainment a la 2005. Gameday is now basically a televised corporate tailgate party where football strategy is briefly mentioned between gambling lines, human interest stuff and joke segments. I'm sure it's more profitable to do the second one, but its not something I really watch religiously anymore.

Completely agree. I still have it on in the background most Saturday mornings but it's just noise.

At this point CGD is just background noise to have on while waiting for games to start. Most the segments are unwatchable.

Noon kickoff on fox then is the show for you. I could listen to Urban Meyer talk football all day and Matt Leinart is surprising good even though he’s a Trojan.

I have watched maybe 30 total mins of GameDay in the past 5-6 years.

The small bits I’ve seen, I already know I would watch wayyyy more if they let Saban break down actual football shit for as long as he felt like

Remember when it was just highlights? Now they treat it like it's a newsroom and everything is in a talk show/debate format. They lost their way a long time ago. SportsCenter was iconic when I was growing up.

All you ever needed was a couple of fun/quirky personalities showing sports clips.

you can get clips on twitter now though so ESPN has pivoted to making shows that can be clipped and posted on twitter.

That's not exactly apples to apples IMO. Youtube was around 20+ years ago. You remember the "oldie" videos from the Weis years? I watched those highlights religiously.

I'm not sitting on twitter searching "NBA highlights," then "NHL highlights" as a substitute for what SC used to be, which was an hour long show of consolidated highlights across all of the major sports leagues and college. They tried to turn it into a bunch of talking heads instead of what made it so great: largely unopinionated sports highlights.
