IMO, people on this blog get angry at ESPN because many of their commentators have been right about us in the last 5 years.
I hate it, but Mark May has been way more accurate than Lou (or me) over that time span. It just is what it is.
While true, I think another large segment hate ESPN because they are sensationalists.
Everything is "super awesome" or "super bad" and it's their rhetoric that constantly undermines ND. For instance, Yell-gate with Brian Kelly was ridiculous blown out of proportion and got play time all year... when far worse sideline antics around the country got no coverage. That pisses people off.
My little brother goes to Penn State, him and his friends hate ESPN now because of how they depicted all Penn State students as rioting lunatics when the "riots" were hardly that... and then they warped soundbites from a couple students to make all PSU students sound like insensitive morons.
So then it comes to recruiting, and people HATE how they overrate players in the Under Armour All-American game... and how they really put in no leg work whatsoever to provide accurate/up-to-date news... and really just seem like they care more about what's going to "intrigue" people than doing a thorough/journalistic job. You see stuff like Deontay Greenberry being the #19 WR and you LOL. You see stuff like like Davonte Neal not being listed as considering ND when it's the only place he's taken an OV and you LOL. You see things like them listing Cal but not ND in Ifeadi Odenigbo's final 3 when ND has been in his final 3 more months and he was not seriously considering Cal, and... you guessed it... it makes people LOL.
Rivals has gotten no better. It was a joke when they didn't give Lynch a 5
. It's a joke that they have 20 WRs in the Top 100 but as soon as Jarron Jones committed to ND they moved him out of the top 100 despite him being the #7 DT. It's a joke when Mike Farrell goes on national TV and talks **** about Elijah Shumate being a LB. It's a joke when they pull an ESPN and uprank all of the guys playing in their All-Star game. Why do people like 247? Because a 100 point grading scale makes sense. Because their class ranking formula makes sense. Because their mods put in legwork and never (or at least rarely) give false or "misleading" information like you see from ESPN "journalists" and Rivals mods on the regular.
At this point, it's just folly to suggest that either Rivals or ESPN is remotely close to an "accurate" service. ESPN doesn't care; and time has passed Rivals by.
