There are a number of great things to feel good about last night.
As others have said, 2nd quarter play calling was incredible. That quarter, in and of itself, was nothing short of dominating.
Flip side - I have no idea what happens to our team in the third quarter. I don't know if they go in to the locker room and watch cartoons and eat bon-bons, but they come out in the third quarter they don't even look like the same team. Let Chris Zorich give the half time talks, because what the coaching staff is doing now ain't working.
Sam Young - I don't think it is ALL his fault, but he got HANDLED on many occassions last night. It wasn't even the penalties (although a guy who has started every game of his college career should not have that many mental lapses) it is how he just gets abused. They showed one replay last night from behind Jimmy where you see Sam just get moved through the frame like he was a crash test dummy. He looks weak to me - always has. Our whole team looks weak. I have said it for years now and I will continue to say it - Mendoza should have gone with Latina. We look weak and we look like we run out of gas in the second half of games.
Flip side - it was awesome to see T-Rob come over and defend his QB when the guy taunted Jimmy. Too many times in recent years (especially '07) Jimmy would get hit late or whatever, and not one O-lineman would do anything. I don't care if you give up some unsportsmanlike penalties - you have to defend your QB and that was awesome to see T-Rob there.
DB's - look awful. Supposedly a position of strength coming out of summer and they look terrible. Arm tackling is killing us. I am waiting to see a DB lay the wood to someone just once!
D-line is improving - each and every game. We hold one of the top rushers in the country to under HALF his average? Someone is doing something right. I think they are getting better.
That's it. I am out for now. Here's a bowl for you NDOM!!!
