The clearest (subtle) thing that I sense about this team is that it was starved for any form of leadership. ... and I have no feeling as to where that will come from next season. Muffet can do only so much from the bench.

IRISH SEASON ENDS WITH 67-65 HEARTBREAKER TO PITT IN ACC TOURNAMENT
GILBERT SHINES WITH 20 POINTS, SIX REBOUNDS AND THREE STEALS

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 10 seeded Notre Dame women’s basketball team (13-18) engaged in a back-and-forth battle with No. 15 seeded Pittsburgh (5-25) on Wednesday. The game was tied at 65-all with under 10 seconds to go when the Panthers hit the go-ahead jumper for the 67-65 final. The Irish had a chance with 2.1 seconds remaining after advancing the ball, but couldn’t connect on the in-bounds play.

Katlyn Gilbert shone bright in today’s ACC Tournament game, pouring in 20 points, in which 16 were scored in the second half. Gilbert also recorded six rebounds and three steals, including the steal which led to the breakaway layup to tie the game at 65-all.

How It Happened

Notre Dame got off to an 11-3 start behind 5-of-10 shooting from Walker, Vaughn and Brunelle. The Panthers only points of the quarter came from beyond the arc, converting four, to close the gap to 13-12. However, the Irish scored last behind a Marta Sniezek three-pointer (just her third of the season) to end the period up 16-12.

The Irish opened up a seven-point lead after a pair of Walker free-throws at 7:59 in the second, but the Panthers roared back with a 13-2 run, claiming their first lead of the game at 29-25 at 3:38. Notre Dame reclaimed the lead with a 6-0 run, which was powered by a Brunelle three. Yet, Pitt’s hot shooting continued through the end of the period, as they made nine of their last 11 shots to go up right at the buzzer, 34-33.

Pitt tacked on three more triples in the third to start 9-of-14 from deep. The Panthers ultimately built its largest lead of the game at 49-41 at the 3:15 mark. Walker chipped away at the deficit with four straight points from the free-throw line, as a Gilbert layup at 1:23 made it a 6-0 run. Pittsburgh tallied the final bucket of the period to enter the fourth up 51-47.

Gilbert scored four of the team’s first six points to reclaim the lead for the Irish, 53-51, at 8:45. Gilbert tallied another jumper at 7:13 in the fourth to tie the game at 57-all. Yet, a three minute scoring drought gave Pittsburgh a 61-57 lead with 4:17 remaining.

Gilbert ended the drought with 4:07 left, as Sniezek followed with back-to-back baskets to pull within one possession at 65-63. Fast forward to 21 seconds left and Gilbert comes up with a huge steal and breakaway layup to tie the game.

On the other end, Pittsburgh’s Dayshanette Harris broke through the Irish defense and connected on a pull-jumper with 2.1 seconds on the clock. The Irish used their last timeout to advance the ball but the Panthers recorded a steal on the in-bounds pass to ice the game, 67-65.

Notes

  • Today marked the 33rd meeting between Notre Dame and Pitt. Despite the loss, the Irish still lead the overall series, 29-4.
  • With the loss, the Irish drop to 17-2 all-time in the ACC Tournament.
  • Gilbert produced her 25th double-digit scoring game of the year and fourth of 20+ points. Gilbert scored 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting.
  • Brunelle logged her 23rd game in double figures, and fifth straight, with 10 points.
  • With two treys today, Brunelle finishes her season with 60 – the second most in a freshman season at Notre Dame.
  • Walker notched her 11th straight game in double figures, and 26th of the season, after collecting 12 points. She will return for a sixth and final season.
  • Sniezek collected a charge in the fourth quarter and finished with 34 on the year.
  • With 11 points today, Sniezek tallied back-to-back games with double-digit points for the fourth time of her career. It marked her fourth double-digit scoring effort on the season.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GatoradePOYQuestions@Fleishman.com

KETTERING FAIRMONT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT-ATHLETE NAMED GATORADE OHIO GIRLS BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

CHICAGO (March 6, 2020) — In its 35th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company today announced Madeline Westbeld of Kettering Fairmont High School as its 2019-20 Gatorade Ohio Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Westbeld is the first Gatorade Ohio Girls Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Kettering Fairmont High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Westbeld as Ohio’s best high school girls basketball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced in March, Westbeld joins an elite alumni association of state award-winners in 12 sports, including Maya Moore (2005-06 Collins Hill High School, Ga.), Rashanda McCants (2004-05, Asheville High School, N.C.), Candace Parker (2001-02, Naperville Central High School, Ill.), Diana Taurasi (1998-99 & 1999-00, Don Antonio Lugo High School, Calif.), Shyra Ely (1999-00, Ben Davis High School, Ind.), Katie Smith (1991-92, Logan High School, Ohio) and Lisa Leslie (1988-89, Morningside High School, Calif.).

The 6-foot-3 senior forward led the Firebirds to a 24-2 record and the Division I regional semifinals at the time of her selection. Westbeld averaged 18 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.8 steals through 26 games. The two-time Greater Western Ohio Conference Player of the Year, she was a First Team All-Ohio selection and has been chosen to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game.

A member of her school’s DECA club, Westbeld has volunteered locally on behalf of youth sports programs. “Westbeld has the ability to play virtually any position on the floor as well as guard any position,” said Bethany Kincer, head coach at Northmont High. “She’s a great all-around leader and she has such a high basketball IQ that she makes everyone on her team better.”

Westbeld has maintained a 3.66 GPA in the classroom. She has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball on scholarship at the University of Notre Dame this fall.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls socc er, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track and field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. From the 12 national winners, one male and one female athlete are each named Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year. In all, 607 athletes are honored eac h year.

Westbeld joins Gatorade Ohio Girls Basketball Players of the Year Jordan Horston (2018-19, Columbus Africentric Early College High School), Kierstan Bell (2017-18, Canton McKinley High School), Dee Bekelja (2016-17, Solon High School), Jensen Caretti (2015-16, River High School), Hallie Thome (2014-15, Chagrin Falls High School), and Kelsey Mitchell (2013-14, Princeton High School) as athletes who have won the basketball award since its inception in 2007.

As a part of Gatorade’s cause marketing platform “Play it Forward,” Westbeld also has the opportunity to award a $1,000 grant to a local or national youth sports organization of her choosing. She is also eligible to submit an essay to win one of twelve $10,000 spotlight grants for the organization of choice, which will be announced throughout the year.

Since the program’s inception in 1985, Gatorade Player of the Year award recipients have won hundreds of professional and college championships, and many have also turned into pillars in their communities, becoming coaches, business owners and educators.

WESTBELD/CAMPBELL EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORABLE MENTION HONORS
DUO LAND ON 2020 JERSEY MIKE’S NAISMITH NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL ALL-AMERICA LIST

Naismith Release

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – More accolades continue to roll in for Notre Dame women’s basketball class of 2020 signees. The Jersey Mike’s Naismith National High School All-America list was released on Tuesday, with both Maddy Westbeld and Alli Campbell receiving Honorable Mention nods.

Westbeld continues to stockpile accolades. Today’s announcement comes on the heels of her being named both the Gatorade Ohio Player of the Year and the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association (OPSWA) Division I Player of the Year. Furthermore, Westbeld will be playing in the 2020 McDonald’s All-America game.

Westbeld just capped her high school career at Kettering Fairmont, where she led the Firebirds to a 25-3 record and regional finals appearance in the OHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships. She led her team in scoring (18.0) rebounds (11.2), assists (3.6), steals (2.8) and blocked shots (2.3).

Campbell is no stranger to the Gatorade Player of the Year award as well, earning the honor in 2018. Campbell, along with fellow future Irish Natalija Marshall, were invited to play in the 2020 Jordan Brand Classic in Chicago.

Furthermore, Campbell is in pursuit of her third Class 2A Pennsylvania state title with Bellwood-Antis High. On March 10, she competes in a second round PIAA playoff bout, just 16 points shy from 3,000 in her storied career. Campbell is already the all-time leading scorer in Blair County and District 6 history.

Thank you to the Virginia Tech Community for giving me the opportunity to be apart of the University academically and athletically. I am very grateful for the endless support and relationships I made throughout my two years. Hokie Nation will always be a part of me.

However after much though and consideration, I have decided to enter my name in the transfer portal.

Solid 3 pt shooter and a PG.
