Well that helps some. Walker is (to my eye) the fastest court speed player that we have, has the potential for breakaways, and has some court sense (time and situation.) If she had more offensive help, I believe that the occasional "gunning" would diminish into good shot taking.

Walker/ Peoples/ Brunelle/ Gilbert/ Vaughn aren't a bad five if they can ever cohere. I assume MUCH better defensive savvy out of the rookies (PBG) and even Walker. Muffet BADLY needs three capable bench players, at least one of which is a true post-rebounder. MAYBE then she'll have enough ammo to work with.

I recall a press conference several games ago, where she said (very unconvincingly) "I think that we have enough" (to win games at this level). She was whistling in the dark. But even if she really didn't believe that, the mere fact of having to use those words tells us how scraping the bottom the team was/is.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s basketball squad will hold its annual Pink Zone game on Sunday, Feb. 23, when the Irish (10-17, 5-10) host the Syracuse Orange (15-11, 9-6). Tip inside Purcell Pavilion is scheduled for Noon ET, airing live on the ACC Network. Bob Nagle and Karen Keyes will have the radio broadcast once again on Pulse FM. We encourage all fans to wear their best pink for Sunday’s contest!

ANNUAL PINK ZONE GAME SUNDAY

Notre Dame’s Pink Zone initiative has made a tremendous impact on our local community over the last ten years by providing funds for education, screenings, support and research for breast cancer.

Like years prior, fans bid on player warmup shirts and the coaches polos, with the winners placing their loved one’s name on the back. Both the shooting shirts and polos will be worn for Sunday’s game.

With five minutes left in the second quarter, those with 0-10 years of survivorship will line up in the gate 10 vom, while those with 10+ years will line up in the gate 8 vom. This year ,we will have a speed painter presentation at halftime.

HISTORY WITH SYRACUSE

Notre Dame leads the overall series 34-3 against Syracuse, with an unblemished 16-0 mark at home.

Back on Jan. 5, Syracuse broke a 21-game Irish win streak in the series with a 74-63 overtime win. Notre Dame boasted a 10-point lead over Syracuse in the fourth quarter, but the Orange stormed back to tie the game with a three with six seconds remaining.

Walker, Vaughn and Brunelle combined for 53 points, with Walker leading the way with 25 points. Vaughn earned her first double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. Brunelle tallied 12 points and seven rebounds.

ACC FRESHMEN OF THE YEAR CANDIDACY

Brunelle and Gilbert lead all ACC freshmen in scoring, each averaging 13.3 ppg. In fact, the Irish would have boasted the top three scoring spots for freshmen when you add in Peoples’ 12.6 ppg. The next highest is Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley at 11.9.

Brunelle leads all ACC freshmen in the Points + Assists + Rebounds/Game category at 20.5. Furthermore, only three ACC freshmen average at least 10 points, 5 rebounds and 1.5 assists: Brunelle, Peoples & Clemson’s Amari Robinson.

Brunelle’s four 20+ scoring games leads all freshmen in the ACC. In addition, her .392 shooting percentage leads all ACC freshmen as well.

When looking at double-digit scoring games, Gilbert leads the way there with 22. Clemson’s Amari Robinson follows next with 16, while Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley sits with 15.

Only two players in all of the ACC average at least 10 points, 2.5 assists, 2 steals and 4 rebounds: Gilbert and Duke’s Haley Gorecki. Widening the range – only nine players total among Power-5 schools.

Next, there only two freshmen pairs in all of Division-I to both average 13.0 ppg or higher –> ND’s Brunelle and Gilbert & Fresno State’s Haley & Hanna Cavinder.

All-in-all, Brianna Turner, who remains the program’s lone ACC Rookie of the Year, averaged 13.8 ppg when she won it back in 2015.

FULFILLING HER DESTINEE

What a month it’s been for Walker. Only Virginia’s Jocelyn Willoughby (20.8 ppg) and Duke’s Haley Gorecki (19.2 ppg) are having a better February than Walker (19.2 ppg) amongst ACC players.

Big part of it has been Walker’s fourth quarter surges in February. She went 5-of-10 in the fourth vs. Virginia Tech, scoring 12 of her 19 points. She helped cut what was a 22-point deficit to five points with 11 seconds left.

She tallied eight of her 24 points in the fourth vs. Pitt.

After sitting with two points at the half at Wake Forest, Walker willed the Irish to victory by scoring 12 points in the third and 10 points in the fourth.

Notable mention: Walker almost single-handedly won the game in Boston College (2/13), pouring in 21 points, including a go-ahead basket with 1.2 seconds on the clock.

THREE’S BY A FRESHMAN

Brunelle was on fire from three against Virginia Tech on Feb. 20. The freshman started 4-for-4 from deep before finishing the game 6-of-10. The six threes marked a career high and the most from an Irish player since Arike Ogunbowale (6) vs. Virginia on March 3, 2019.

Her six treys were the second most in an individual game by a Notre Dame freshman, with Alicia Ratay holding the top mark when she downed seven at Rutgers on Feb. 19, 2000.

Lastly, Brunelle is now up to 44 made three-pointers on the year, which ranks third for a season amongst Notre Dame freshmen. Beth (Morgan) Cunningham ranks second with 46, while Alicia Ratay holds the freshman record with 73.

HEATING UP FROM THREE

Sam Brunelle struggled early on, going 13-of-68 (.191) from beyond the arc over the first 14 games. However, she’s flipped the script as of late. Since Jan. 5, she has converted 25-of-73 (.342) from three. Also since Jan. 5, Brunelle is averaging 2.1 made three’s/game.

DESTINEE – 20 POINT GAMES

For the first time of her career, Walker achieved three straight games with 20+ points from Feb. 6-13. Walker totaled 69 points in said span, averaging 23.0 ppg on 48.9 percent shooting. She was also 8-of-17 from three (.471) and 15-of-17 (.882) from the line.

Walker is still on the best stretch of her season, posting six straight with double-digit points.

She leads the Irish in 20+ scoring performances with eight, which also sets a new career best – previous was four set her sophomore year at UNC (2016-17). Her eight games are tied for 6th in the ACC.

3PT FG% DEFENSE

The Irish lead ACC schools in league play in three-point field goal percentage defense, limiting opposition to .258 shooting percentage from beyond the arc.

TRENDING

Over the last five games, Gilbert’s rebounding production has gone up. She’s averaging 5.8 rebounds in that span, up from her season average of 4.6.

REUNITED IN DALLAS

Best friends, national champions, now WNBA teammates. On Feb. 21, the Dallas Wings acquired Marina Mabrey from the LA Sparks, reuniting her with Arike Ogunbowale. Marina left as the program’s all-time made threes leader, while Arike left as the all-time scoring leader.

IRISH GUT OUT 72-70 WIN OVER SYRACUSE
VAUGHN TALLIES A CAREER HIGH 21 POINTS

DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s basketball squad (11-17, 6-10) received a career high 21-point performance from Mikki Vaughn, while the Fighting Irish defense notched a gritty performance in the final minutes to defeat Syracuse (15-12, 9-7), 72-70.

“We finally got off to a great start. Just a gutty performance down the stretch. Vaughn was the player of the game to me. She hit the shot with no time on the shot clock, the two free throws and taking the charge. She got a career high today and played a great game,” Karen & Kevin Keyes Family head coach Muffet McGraw said. “We wavered a bit in the fourth, but happy we held on for the win.”

With 1:02 remaining, Vaughn hit two clutch free throws to break a 70-70 tie and push the Irish out ahead. Notre Dame’s defense then iced the game with two big defensive stands, including one right at the buzzer.

How It Happened

The Irish were red-hot out of the gate, converting eight of their first 10 shots to jump out to a 23-5 lead. Brunelle picked right up where she left off on Thursday, hitting two threes within the first three minutes. The best part of the start was that all five starters had scored by the 6:36 mark.

Notre Dame ended the period up 27-11, recording the second most points in an opening quarter this season (scored 30 against DePaul). On the flip side, the Irish held Syracuse to 3-of-17 shooting.

Walker had her 10th point of the game by 8:13 in the second, and by the half, both Vaughn and Brunelle joined her in double figures with the Irish up 44-33. The Irish shot just over 50 percent for the half, while Syracuse went three-heavy, attempting 35 total shots in the half in which 23 were from beyond the arc.

Syracuse edged Notre Dame, 21-18 in the third, cutting the deficit to single digits at 62-54. The Orange continued to chip away, as the visitors narrowed it all the way down to 64-63. Enter Vaughn, who stymied the attack with a critical layup at 4:34. Gilbert then stepped up and delivered back-to-back layups to give the Irish a 70-65 advantage with 3:04 remaining.

Later tied at 70-all with 1:02 left, Vaughn converted her two free throws to push the Irish back on top. Fast forward to 10.1 seconds remaining and it’s Syracuse ball at mid-court out of a timeout. The Orange attempted two shots during their final possession but the Irish defense stood tall for the 72-70 win.

Walker tied her career high of six assists to go with her 16 points. Brunelle nearly finished with a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Then Gilbert rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points, six assists and three steals.

Notes

  • Today marked the 38th meeting between Notre Dame and Syracuse. The Irish lead the all-time series 35-3 with an unblemished 17-0 mark at home.
  • Notre Dame avenged a regular-season loss with a regular-season win for the first time since the 2007-08 season. Back then, the Irish were nipped 81-80 at home by Big East rival DePaul, and later won 66-64 in Chicago.
  • With three treys, Brunelle now has 47 on the season and surpasses Beth (Morgan) Cunningham for the second most in a freshman season. Alicia Ratay holds the top mark with 73.
  • Notre Dame scored the second most points in an opening quarter this season with 27. The Irish tallied 30 in the first versus DePaul. However, the Irish did notch their best first quarter shooting percentage, converting 59 percent of their shots (10-of-17).
  • Walker logged her seventh straight game in double figures and 23rd of the season after recording 16 points on Sunday. Walker rounded out her stat line with six boards, a career high tying six assists and three steals.
  • Brunelle recorded her 20th game in double figures with 15 points, and nearly earned a double-double with nine rebounds.
  • Notre Dame earned 20 assists on 27 made field goals. It marked their fourth 20-assist game of the season.
  • Gilbert tallied her 23rd game in double figures as well with 12 points.
  • Sniezek tied her season high of seven rebounds.
  • For the second straight game, Cole achieved a career high six rebounds.

Up Next

The Irish will compete in their home finale on Thursday, Feb. 27, against North Carolina, which means Senior Day inside Purcell Pavilion. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, streaming live on ACCNX. The Irish will honor both Katie Cole and Marta Sniezek.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – With two regular season games left, including the home finale on Thursday, the Notre Dame women’s basketball squad will host Senior Day on Feb. 27 inside Purcell Pavilion. The Fighting Irish (11-7, 6-10) host the North Carolina Tar Heels (16-11, 7-9) at 7 p.m. ET, with Senior Day festivities taking place before the game at 6:40 p.m.

Senior Katie Cole and graduate student Marta Sniezek will be honored.

ACC ROOKIE OF THE YEAR CANDIDACY

Brunelle and Gilbert lead all ACC freshmen in scoring, averaging 13.4 and 13.2 ppg, respectively. In fact, the Irish would have boasted the top three scoring spots for freshmen when you add in Peoples’ 12.6 ppg. The next highest is Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley at 12.0.

Brunelle leads all ACC freshmen in the Points + Assists + Rebounds/Game category at 20.8. Furthermore, only three ACC freshmen average at least 10 points, 5 rebounds and 1.5 assists: Brunelle, Peoples & Clemson’s Amari Robinson.

Brunelle’s four 20+ scoring games leads all freshmen in the ACC. Gilberts leads all ACC freshmen in assists/game, where she averages 2.7.

When looking at double-digit scoring games, Gilbert leads the way there with 23, with Brunelle next at 20. Clemson’s Amari Robinson & Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley follows next with 16.

Among freshmen at power-five schools, Brunelle’s and Gilbert’s scoring average ranks seventh & eighth, respectively.

Next, there only two freshmen pairs in all of Division-I to both average 13.0 ppg or higher –> Brunelle and Gilbert, Fresno State’s Haley & Hanna Cavinder and UTSA’s Mikayla Woods & Adryana Quezada

All-in-all, Brianna Turner, who remains the program’s lone ACC Rookie of the Year, averaged 13.8 ppg when she won it back in 2015.

GILBERT + GORECKI IN CLASS OF THEIR OWN

Only two players in all of the ACC average at least 10 points, 2.5 assists, 2 steals and 4 rebounds: Gilbert and Duke’s Haley Gorecki. Widening the range – only eight players total among Power-5 schools.

FULFILLING HER DESTINEE

What a month it’s been for Walker – seven games, seven double-digit scoring performances. Only Virginia’s Jocelyn Willoughby (22.2 ppg) and Duke’s Haley Gorecki (19.4 ppg) are having a better February than Walker (19.2 ppg) amongst ACC players.

When further looking at February-only stats: Walker is shooting 42.5 percent from the field and 30-of-35 from the free-throw line (.857). She recorded three straight games with 20+ points from Feb. 6-13.

4TH QUARTER SURGES

Big part of Walker’s success this month is due to her fourth quarter surges.

Walker went 5-of-10 in the fourth vs.

THREES BY A FRESHMAN

Brunelle enters Thursday’s matchup vs. UNC with 47 three-pointers on the season. That number surpassed Beth Cunningham for second most in a freshman season, trailing only Irish great Alicia Ratay at 73.

Her six treys were the second most in an individual game by a ND freshman, with Alicia Ratay still holding the top mark when she downed seven at Rutgers on Feb. 19, 2000.

HEATING UP FROM THREE

Sam Brunelle struggled early on, going 13-of-68 (.191) from beyond the arc over the first 14 games. However, the next 14 games, she’s converted 34-of-96 (.354) from three.

Brunelle has made 14 treys in the month of February, which ranks 5th in the ACC in that span.

In league play, Brunelle averages 2.1 made threes/game on 34.0 percent shooting from deep – both rank in the top-10.

DESTINEE – 20 POINT GAMES

For the first time of her career, Walker achieved three straight games with 20+ points from Feb. 6-13. Walker totaled 69 points in said span, averaging 23.0 ppg.

All-in-all, she leads the Irish in 20+ scoring performances with eight, which also sets a new career best – previous was four set her sophomore year at UNC (2016-17). Her eight games are tied for 6th in the ACC.

ACC MOST IMPROVED NOMINEE – VAUGHN

As the lone Irish player with significant on-court experience from last season, Vaughn took on a major leadership role with the team, and is also the program’s best nominee for most improved: Vaughn went from averaging 3.3 points and 2.4 rebounds to 10.9 points and 6.9 rebounds. She shot 52.5 percent last year and jumped that to 58.2 percent aka the second best shooting percentage in the ACC.

VAUGHN DOUBLE-DIGIT EFFORTS

Mikki Vaughn has recorded five separate occasions in which she has reached double-digit points by halftime – four of which occurred on the road:
– 13 at Pitt on Jan. 2
– 10 at Syracuse on Jan. 5
– 14 at Duke on Jan. 23
– 10 at Georgia Tech on Feb. 2

All-in-all, Vaughn has notched eight double-digit scoring performances in league play – seven of which have been 16+ points. She has also recorded two 20-point efforts in just the month of February.
Vaughn is coming off a career high 21-point showing vs. Syracuse on Feb. 23.

FEBRUARY-ONLY STATS

When looking at just the month of February, the Irish rank first in three-point field goal defense (.205), second in field goal defense (.372) and second in assists/game (14.7).

BATTLE TESTED

Though the Irish are 11-17 on the year, they boast a winning record in games decided by five points or less, with a 5-3 mark. Extending it further, Notre Dame is closer to .500 at 7-8 in games decided by 10 points or less.

IRISH SEND SENIORS OUT ON HIGH NOTE WITH 83-65 WIN OVER NORTH CAROLINA
BRUNELLE & GILBERT COMBINE FOR 47 POINTS

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame women’s basketball rookies Sam Brunelle and Katlyn Gilbert continued to strengthen their respective cases for ACC Rookie of the Year on Thursday night, combining for 47 points in the 83-65 win over North Carolina.

The Fighting Irish (12-17, 7-10) recorded their most efficient showing on the year, notching a season best 26 assists on 33 made field goals against the Tar Heels (16-12, 7-10). In addition, the Irish shot over 50 percent in all four quarters, finishing 52.4 percent for the game.

“I am so thankful we could end (our home campaign) with two wins at home,” Karen & Kevin Keyes Family head coach Muffet McGraw said. “We really struggled at home this year and we wanted to give them this small gift as a thank you for all they’ve done for us. We really appreciate their loyalty and support. They inspired us tonight.”

Katlyn Gilbert came one point shy of her career high with 24 points on 10-of-21 shooting to go with her season-high tying eight rebounds. Brunelle followed right behind with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting, plus nine boards. Brunelle and Gilbert continue to lead all freshmen in the ACC in scoring, ranking first and second, respectively.

Furthermore, Marta Sniezek had a Senior Day to remember, dishing out a career high 14 assists (with just two turnovers), which tied for third on the Notre Dame all-time single-game list. Mary Gavin still holds the top mark with 17, set back in 1987.

How It Happened

Notre Dame converted six of its first eight shots to jump out to a 15-8 lead before Walker’s third three-pointer of the quarter gave the Irish a 21-16 advantage after one. Brunelle also powered the offense with seven points.

Speaking of whom, Brunelle scored the first five Irish points in the second quarter, followed by four straight from Gilbert. Next, Danielle Cosgrove stole the show by firing off a career best three treys in under a three-minute span, powering the Irish to a 43-32 halftime lead.

Brunelle (14 points) and Walker (11 points) were already in double figures at the half, while Cosgrove and Gilbert lingered at nine and eight points, respectively. Overall, Notre Dame notched 14 assists on 17 made fields and were an impressive 7-of-9 from beyond the arc.

The Irish maintained the hot hand in the third, primarily thanks to Gilbert, outscoring the Tar Heels 14-3 over the first five minutes. Gilbert poured in 11 of the team’s 23 points in the period, while Brunelle supplied seven. All-in-all, Notre Dame collected 20+ points for the third straight quarter.

With the game in hand in the fourth quarter, it was the walk-ons time to shine with 1:30 remaining. With the clock winding down, both Kathleen Keyes and Catherine Murdock recorded baskets, sending fans to their feet and delivering the 83-65 final.

..... remarkable.

Muffet got them there finally, but will probably be scratching her head all off-season as to why it took this group so long. And I don't believe that it was her fault. These players just seemed to have a hard time gelling with one another, even the experienced ones.

... but she turned them into a team in the end.

The trey barrage was awesome ... but Sam’s cross lane hook” pass inside for an easy layup, Marta’s bounce pass to Mik in the high post with the quick bounce to Gilbert slashing to the basket for two looked like the McGraw teams of years past.

UNC isn’t a Top 10 team but so many players had the light turn on. Actual plays with assists made to an open shooter rather than standing around like playground ball. Gilbert had some nifty moves near the basket for high percentage shots instead of taking the underhand layups she tried against BIGs all too frequently that were blocked or hit the underside of the backboard for no point possessions. She has a penchant for driving into a crowd like Arike used to do. She played smarter and looked in control of her shots against The Heels. She reminded me of Jackie streaking to the basket.

Sam hit 3s and moved to the bastet to pull down rebs. Gilbert also was aggressive on the boards. Marta became a playmaker.

Fun game.

Can they repeat it against the Noles?

TALLAHASSEE – One road trip and one regular season game remains for the Notre Dame women’s basketball team. On Sunday, March 1, the Fighting Irish (12-17, 7-10) will look to knock off No. 19 Florida State (22-6, 11-6) inside the Donald L. Tucker Center. Tip is slated for 2 p.m. ET on the ACC Network.

ACC ROOKIE OF THE YEAR CANDIDACY

Sam Brunelle and Katlyn Gilbert lead all ACC freshmen in scoring, averaging 13.7 and 13.6 ppg, respectively.

Brunelle leads all ACC freshmen in the Points + Assists + Rebounds/Game category at 21.2. Furthermore, there are only eight players total in the ACC, counting Sam, who average at least 13 points, 6 rebounds & 1.5 assists. In addition, Brunelle’s five 20+ scoring games leads all freshmen in the ACC.

Gilberts leads all ACC freshmen in assists/game, where she averages 2.7. When looking at double-digit scoring games, Gilbert leads the way there as well with 24, with Brunelle next at 21. Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley follows next with 17.

Next, there only three freshmen pairs in all of Division-I to both average 13.0 ppg or higher –> ND’s Brunelle and Gilbert, Fresno State’s Haley & Hanna Cavinder and UTSA’s Mikayla Woods & Adryana Quezada

GILBERT IN ELITE COMPANY

Only two players in all of the ACC average at least 13 points, 2.5 assists, two steals and four rebounds: Gilbert and Duke’s Haley Gorecki. Expanding that out, only six players total among Power-5 schools. In fact, when looking at just Division I freshmen – just Gilbert and Buffalo’s Dyaisha Fair.

FULFILLING HER DESTINEE

What a February for Walker – eight games, eight double-digit scoring performances. Walker posted the fifth best scoring average in February with her 18.1 ppg. When further looking at February-only stats – she shot 41.7 percent from the field and 31-of-38 from the free-throw line (.816).

HEATING UP FROM THREE

Brunelle has made 16 treys in the month of February, which ranks 5th in the ACC in that span. In fact, she’s converted 11-of-26 (.423) over the last three games.

In league play, Brunelle is averaging 2.1 made threes, which ranks 8th. She’s also shooting .343 from deep, which ranks 6th.

|
Her eight games rank 7th in the ACC.

SNIEZEK WRITES NAME IN RECORD BOOK

Marta Sniezek dished out a career high 14 assists (with just 2 turnovers) against UNC on Feb. 27. It tied for the third most all-time in a single game at Notre Dame, with Mary Gavin still holding the top mark with 17 set back in 1987.

Her 14 assists not only marked the highest in the ACC this season, but tied for the fourth most in all of Division I. Three different players have each dished out 15 assists this year.

SNIEZEK DIMES

Sniezek is averaging 5.6 assists/game which ranks 15th in the nation and 2nd in the ACC – only behind Virginia Tech’s Taja Cole. In addition, her 1.3 A/TO ratio ranks 11th in the league.

Sniezek now boasts three double-digit assist performances on the year, which ties Cole for the most in the league.

TRENDING: GILBERT REBOUNDS

Twice over the last three games, Gilbert has tied her career high in rebounds, reeling in eight. Over the last four games, she has totaled 23 rebounds, averaging 5.8 – up from season average.

VAUGHN DOUBLE-DIGIT EFFORTS

Vaughn has notched eight double-digit scoring performances in league play – seven of which have been 16+ points.

She has also recorded two 20-point efforts in just the month of February. Most recently, a career high 21-point showing vs. Syracuse on Feb. 23.

Interesting to note, Vaughn has recorded five separate occasions in which she has reached double-digit points by halftime – four of which occurred on the road:
– 13 at Pitt on Jan. 2
– 10 at Syracuse on Jan. 5
– 14 at Duke on Jan. 23
– 10 at Georgia Tech on Feb. 2

Rough game coming today --- lots of athleticism on the opponent side. Hope that the ladies find all their inner warrior and give FSU a real four-quarter battle, whether we're in it scoring wise or not. That is the signature that Muffet wants to see in this game, win or no.
