I’m ready to see the Brunelle and People’s era begin. I think they can grow to be a very dynamic duo.

Prohaska is out for the near future with bilateral pulmonary embolisms. I’m assuming she’ll be on a blood thinner until those clear.

That’s a huge blow, regardless of whether she would start or come off the bench. But at the end of the day I hope they can get her healthy, blood clots in the lung is no joke.

Saw a shot chart for this game --- at three quarters. ND had only TWO made shots which were not labeled "lay-ups" --- two threes by Brunelle. Weirdest shot chart I've ever seen.

Also, Fordham's pretty good --- a champion last year.

Fordham's site had a decent if slow play-by-play. Some points as best I could determine from that sort of coverage:

1. Fordham's a high-energy team which opts to crash the offensive boards and we weren't very good at preventing that;
2. They are also sort of a crazy gun-slinging team firing up three pointers all over --- and missing most of them;
3. Down the stretch it was Walker who tried to take over the game for ND. Kaitlyn Gilbert was at least as effective. Brunelle was not particularly at crunch time (I suppose she'll get there);
4. Muffet has to be going a bit nuts as we could have separated from them late in the game but could not make both free throws ever --- no joke, make one then miss;
5. the game was saved by us REBOUNDING two of those last minute misses!!!

A few other numbers:
1. We shot 36.5%; 2 for ten threes;

2. We went to the foul line 33 times to their two!!! Typical Muffet team in that regard. Obviously that's why we won; despite missing 13 free throws;

3. we had 14 assists (mainly by Sniezek) but 21 turnovers. Marta Sniezek won't shoot but Muffet apparently believes that she MUST be on the floor at all times --- Gilbert on the other hand has much more offensive wannabe, but had no assists. Sniezek is therefore our point guard as of now;

4. we had ten steals; we'll probably be good at that; and 32 points in the paint --- I assume due to Muffet's passing offense.

People who watched the game would have a better perspective, but these are the stats and my best guesses.

....we are a six athlete team without Abby, as of now. Cosgrove might make it seven.

Didn’t watch it but there’s no way we can have any type of decent season playing 6 deep. I love Muffet and wouldn’t trade her for the world but we’ve got develop and get more players on the floor.

1000th ND WBB Program Win

Ranked 13th All-Time Wins

A game behind UMD, 4 games behind WKY, and 5 behind Green Bay but going to be tough gaining ground while playing an ND tough schedule in a rebuilding year while the other don't play comparable schedules.

Freshmen help No. 16 Notre Dame women beat Fordham 60-55
8:45 PM CT
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Freshmen Sam Brunelle and Anaya Peoples scored in double figures in their Notre Dame debut, Katlyn Gilbert added 14 and the 16th-ranked Irish held off Fordham 60-55 on Tuesday night.

Brunelle scored 14 points, Peoples had 11 and Destinee Walker 10 in the 1,000th victory for the Notre Dame program -- which was runner-up to Baylor in last year's national championship game -- and the 26th consecutive victory in a season opener.

Notre Dame led by 15 with under four minutes left in the second half before the Rams, 2019 Atlantic 10 champions, rallied within two, 57-55, with 11 seconds remaining. But the Irish made 3 of 6 free throws, keeping possession with a rebound and a steal.

Notre Dame played without sophomore guard Abby Prohaska, who announced via Twitter on Monday that she has blood clots in both lungs. She is out indefinitely.

Didn’t watch it but there’s no way we can have any type of decent season playing 6 deep. I love Muffet and wouldn’t trade her for the world but we’ve got develop and get more players on the floor.

They only played 6 or 7 players when they one the championship in 2018.

Muffett never plays a deep bench and losing Prohaska doesn’t help. Also, she had two players transfer out over the summer. This will be a smaller team until next year when she has four freshmen coming in and the only player that will graduate is a former walk on.

Sure but that team was full of veteran players. I know we only have 8 scholarship players, but figure out how to play all of them and get a healthy rotation. I find it hard to imagine two freshmen can play the minutes they do and not be worn out halfway through the season, let alone by the end of the year.

I did not know Vaughn was injured during the game. Do we know the severity of the injury yet?

Mikayla Vaughn out for 4-6 weeks with a right knee sprain

Mikayla Vaughn out for 4-6 weeks with a right knee sprain

by Miles Garrett WSBT
Thursday, November 7th 2019

A Notre Dame women's basketball team already lacking experience and depth just got a little .

Head coach Muffet McGraw said today, that junior center Mikayla Vaughn suffered a knee sprain in the season opener against Fordham Tuesday evening. She's expected to miss the next four to six weeks.

Vaughn was at practice this afternoon with her right knee immobilized. Vaughn's absence leaves 6-4 sophomore Danielle Cosgrove as the only other true post player on the roster.

McGraw said freshman Sam Brunelle, who's known for being more of a perimeter player, will have to help pick up the slack on the inside now too.

Vaughn's injury leaves the Irish now with only two players over six feet tall, and only seven healthy scholarship players on the roster.

4-6 weeks would put her out until the first week in December to mid-month too late for the Cancun Challenge in late November. The early date would be in time for the Big 10 Challenge against MINN and Conn. There are only two other games before Christmas, DePaul and and exhibition game against Guelph. The ACC schedule opens on 12/29 against Clemson.

Personally I'd like to see her back after Conn and perhaps DePaul. Let her work back in against Guelph. If that's the case, does the rest of the team work over the Christmas holidays to perpare for the ACC Opener.

DEC4 MINNESOTA (ACC/BIG) 8:00 PM(Home) ACCN*
DEC8 UCONN 4:00 PM(Away) ESPN*
DEC11 DEPAUL 6:30 PM(Home) ACCN*
DEC21 GUELPH 1:00 PM(Home)

DEC29 CLEMSON

I'm afraid it's going to be a long season.

They definitely will take a step back this year but I think they'll get better and better as the year goes on and in 2 years they'll be back to a top 5 team. I'm loving what I'm seeing from People's and Gilbert. Walker, too. Wish we could have her for 4 years. Brunelle has her moments. Not having enough bigs and a short bench will cost us some games. That's why I think it'll be a couple years before they are back to usual form. I hope they can at least stay ranked all year, though.

I agree. This will be a learning season but the ladies have a good teacher.
