Clemson's Spray had 24 pts. I believe she average 9. She was on fire from the arc. ND couldn't hit the ark from the 3 pt line.

CL 9-18 from outside, ND 2-17 that's a 25 point bulge.

I’m in shock. I don’t even know what to say. This performance was unthinkable for me under a Muffet McGraw team.

Notre Dame falls to Clemson
By Anthony Anderson Tribune Correspondent

Mikki Vaughn was back at last, but now Marta Sniezek’s out.

When will it finally all come together for Notre Dame this season?

Actually, it may not be this season.

“I think it’s going to take another year,” Irish coach Muffet McGraw said of solving her team’s issues following a stunningly disastrous 71-55 women’s college basketball loss Sunday to Clemson.

“We gotta have like a go-to player, and we definitely don’t have one,” McGraw said.

Notre Dame, tipping off its seventh season in the Atlantic Coast Conference, lost an ACC home game for the first time ever, dropping to 48-1 at Purcell Pavilion.

It happened more decisively, too, than the final margin suggests — and it happened against an opponent that came to town just 4-8 with blowout losses against the three ranked clubs it’s played, four additional defeats by at least 13 points each and wins over nobody drawing a whiff of national poll points.

“I don’t even know where to begin,” McGraw said after exhaling hard to start her postgame meeting with media.

She found plenty of places, though, if not necessarily to begin, certainly to address.

“We just couldn’t make a shot, and we hung our heads and didn’t do anything else,” McGraw said. “Instead of saying, ‘I can rebound,’ or ‘I can defend,’ or ‘I can get assists,’ we just hung our heads, and that’s incredibly disappointing, and unacceptable.”

The Irish (5-8, 0-1) labored in many manners, including against a Tiger zone that looked something like their own.

“We just stood around and shot 3s, and we didn’t make any of them,” McGraw said. “Every timeout, we talked about, ‘We’re not shooting 3s, we’re trying to run the offense.’ We forgot the offense. We were in the wrong place the entire first half. We were paralyzed. ... The things we worked on in practice that were open, we didn’t even look there. We didn’t even try to throw it in.

“It’s really getting discouraging that we’re just not making that next step.”

Vaughn, the junior center who had missed the previous 11 games with a knee injury suffered in the opener, returned to score eight points on 4-of-5 shooting and make four steals in 23 minutes.

“I didn’t feel nearly as out of shape as I thought I was going to feel, so I guess that’s something,” said Vaughn, who added that she was otherwise disappointed in her play and that she’s “tired of losing.”

While Vaughn was back, Sniezek, ND’s starting point guard all season, missed a regular-season game for the first time, that after likewise sitting out an exhibition last week with plantar fasciitis.

“That’s up to her,” McGraw said of when Sniezek might return. “I have no idea.”

McGraw refused to place much blame for Sunday’s loss on the absence of her team’s season leader in assists, minutes played and drawn charges.

“I don’t think that had anything to do with it honestly,” McGraw said, “(except) it would’ve been good to have an extra sub, because a couple people didn’t really come to play. We had to play them. It would’ve been nice to be able to take them out.”

On the other side, Clemson got glistening performances from both junior sharpshooter Kendall Spray and 6-foot senior forward Kobi Thornton.

By the end of third quarter — at which time the Tigers led 55-31 — Spray already had all of her season-high 24 points on 8-of-14 3-point shooting, often striking from several feet beyond the arc. Notre Dame at that point was 0-of-11 on 3s.

Thornton, meanwhile, finished two short of her career high with 23 points, repeatedly carving the Irish up inside and from the elbow areas on an 11-of-19 shooting night.

“Spray really shot the ball well, which we knew going in, but again our lack of awareness really, really hurt us,” McGraw said of a player now 23-of-45 on treys over her last four games. “Then Thornton had a really good second half. “(She) was a tough matchup for us.”

Junior guard Destiny Thomas dished a game-high 12 assists for the winners against four turnovers.

Clemson (5-8, 1-1) celebrated by ambushing coach Amanda Butler in the locker room with a water shower.

“I’ll take that dousing any day,” Butler said, fully aware that the game marked ND’s first-ever ACC home loss.

“This is a really special place to play and special environment,” Butler said. “I admire everything that’s been built here, so to be able to win on this court, for a team that is as new as ours, it’s a really big step forward for us in maturity and just in every facet of the game. ... I thought our overall effort and toughness were just outstanding.”

The Tigers built a 35-17 lead by halftime, holding the Irish to their lowest total in any half this season by four points.

Clemson led by a high of 53-25 at 3:34 to go in the third quarter, before ND began to make a push.

The closest Notre Dame got, though, was 67-55, that at 1:42 left in the game.

Sophomore Katlyn Gilbert led the Irish with 16 points and nine assists. She was 5-of-19 from the field and coughed up seven turnovers.

Freshman Anaya Peoples added 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Grad transfer Destinee Walker scored 10 points, but was 3-of-15 from the field.

Freshman Sam Brunelle was held to a season-low for a full game of five points, and all of those came in the fourth quarter.

Overall, Notre Dame saw a 58-game home winning streak in conference play snapped, its last such loss coming while in the Big East, 65-63 to West Virginia on Feb. 12, 2012.

“They’re going nowhere but up,” Butler insisted of ND’s outlook. “I’m really glad we played them early.”

COLD SHOOTING PLAGUES IRISH IN 71-55 LOSS TO CLEMSON
GILBERT LED WITH 16 POINTS, SIX BOARDS AND A CAREER HIGH NINE ASSISTS

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s basketball team began Atlantic Coast Conference play on Sunday, but couldn’t open up with a victory, falling 71-55 to Clemson. The Fighting Irish (5-8, 0-1) were ultimately doomed by a 7-of-31 shooting performance in the first half and couldn’t overcome the deficit, despite outscoring the Tigers (5-8, 1-1) 24-16 in the fourth quarter.

Katlyn Gilbert provided a superb stat line, registering 16 points, six boards and a career high nine assists. Anaya Peoples supplied 14 points and seven boards, while Destinee Walker rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points and five boards.

Our lack of awareness hurt us again,” Karen & Kevin Keyes Family Head Coach Muffet McGraw said. “(Kobi) Thornton had a really good second half – tough matchup for us. We couldn’t make a shot and we hung our heads. Instead of saying we could get a rebound or defend or get an assist, we just hung our heads and that’s unacceptable.

How It Happened

It was a low scoring first quarter as the Tigers edged the Irish, 12-11. Notre Dame started the game 3-of-4 from the field, but ended the period 4-of-17. Peoples was active on the boards, collecting six rebounds over the opening 10 minutes.

Clemson scored the first six points of the second quarter, jumping out to an 18-11 lead, which forced a Notre Dame timeout at the 8:29 mark. The Tigers then used the momentum to garner a 35-17 advantage at the half, limiting the Irish to 3-of-14 shooting for the period.

Clemson’s Kendall Spray haunted the Irish from the beyond the arc this afternoon, tying the Purcell Pavilion record for made three-pointers with eight. Spray was 5-of-7 from three at the half and finished 8-of-14, tallying a season high 24 points. Behind Spray and Kobi Thornton’s 23-point effort, Clemson built a 28-point lead, up 53-25, with 3:34 left in the third.

However, the Irish continued to fight back, ending the third on a 6-2 scoring spree. Notre Dame then scored the first eight points of the fourth and outscored Clemson 15-4 over a 4.5 minute stretch to cut the deficit to just 13 points (59-46) with 5:33 remaining. Yet, Clemson was able to stymie the momentum, stalling the comeback there to hold on for the 71-55 win.

Notes
  • Irish drop their first contest to Clemson in the all-time series, as they now lead the Tigers, 6-1.
  • Notre Dame’s streak of 58 consecutive conference games won at home came to an end today. The streak dates back to Notre Dame’s Big East days in 2012.
  • Mikki Vaughn played in her first game since hurting her knee in the season opener. Vaughn provided eight points, four steals and two boards.
  • Peoples notched double-digit points for the 10th time this season, tallying 14.
  • Gilbert has totaled double-digit points in all 13 games this season. The sophomore scored a team high 16 points.
  • Gilbert dished out a career high 9 assists.
  • Walker rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 today, her 10th on the season as well.

IRISH KICKOFF NEW YEAR WITH 60-52 WIN AT PITT

VAUGHN TIES CAREER HIGH / PEOPLES LOGS A DOUBLE-DOUBLE

PITTSBURGH – The Notre Dame women’s basketball squad (6-8, 1-1) kicked off the new year with a win, defeating Pittsburgh (3-10, 0-2), 60-52, inside the Petersen Events Center. The Fighting Irish’s Destinee Walker scored five crucial points down the stretch to finish with 16 for the game.

Mikki Vaughn tied her career high of 17 points and nearly earned a double-double with nine boards. Next, Anaya Peoples earned her third double-double over the last four games with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

How It Happened

It was a low scoring affair in the first as the two sides were deadlocked at eight-apiece after the opening period. Vaughn scored six of the team’s points on 3-of-4 shooting. Both Vaughn and Marta Sniezek each took a charge to force nine Pitt turnovers in the quarter.

The Irish matched their first quarter offensive output in just over three minutes into the second. In fact, midway through the period, the Notre Dame offense found a little rhythm, recording a stretch in which they made 5-of-6 from the field to take a 24-18 lead.

Peoples later drained a short-range jumper at the buzzer, handing the Irish a 30-22 halftime lead. Vaughn had produced nearly half the team’s points with 13, four shy of her career high (had six rebounds). Peoples led the rebounding department at the midway point with eight boards to go with her five points.

Furthermore, the Irish forced 17 turnovers in the first half and ultimately finished with 21 for the game.

The Irish came flying out in the opening minute of the third with a 7-0 run, with five points coming from Destinee Walker. The Irish were outscoring the Panthers 11-4 at the under-five media timeout before the Panthers responded with an 8-0 run, cutting the lead to 41-32.

Enter Peoples, who ended the run with a 5-0 scoring spree of her own. By quarter’s end, the Irish boasted a 46-36 advantage after shooting 6-of-14 for the period.

Pitt outscored Notre Dame 12-5 over the first five minutes of the fourth, in which eight of the Panthers’ points came from the free-throw line. Up just 51-48 out of the 5:21 media timeout, Brunelle answered with a timely layup.

Walker then stepped up with a reverse layup at 2:05, then notched the assist to Vaughn at the 1:33 mark, pushing the Irish lead to 57-51. Later up five with 23 seconds left, Walker came up big again with a crucial steal which translated to two Irish free-throws from none other than Walker, as the grad transfer helped seal the victory.

Notes

  • Tonight marked the 31st meeting between Notre Dame and Pitt. The Irish lead 28-3.
  • Sniezek took two charges tonight, totaling 16 on the season now. She has taken a charge in seven straight contests.
  • Peoples logged her 11th double-digit scoring effort on the year and fourth straight with 10 points tonight. Peoples also secured a double-double with 10 rebounds, marking her third in the last four games.
  • Vaughn tied her career high of 17 points, with 13 coming in the first half. She nearly earned a double-double with nine rebounds.
  • Walker recorded 16 points in which 10 came in the second half, including five in the final 2:05 of the game.
  • The Irish forced 17 Pitt turnovers in the first half and 21 for the game. It marked the seventh game this season in which Notre Dame forced 20+ turnovers.

Hard to add anything game-by-game this year --- no real apparent changes in the talent's production, and no way to see them play in reality. But it seems like Muffet is stuck not only with a team that lacks raw scoring talent and for some reason is not improving in cohesion, but she does not have vital leadership. I believe that Abby would have improved both cohesion and leadership, but can't if she can't even practice.

Sniezek is a leadership type I'd guess --- maybe she'll take it on. I'd bet that Peoples will do it in another year --- she seems to work very hard on court. Walker is a good talent --- but I wonder if Muffet sent a message by benching her to begin the Pitt game. Vaughn's a brawler and should help Brunelle improve her presence on court.

I don't take much solace from winning at Pitt --- pretty poor team and we couldn't win "easily." I'm left with fantasizing on what might better have been. One little piece of that would have been the moments when Marta and Abby were both on the floor at the same time --- we would be setting NCAA records for taking charges for sure.

Is it possible for Vaughn to be a leader? She played her best game of the season and her press conference after the Clemson game I thought she showed she might be capable based on her responses.

To a point but it's tough to run an offense from the post. This group often looks like they're playing a pick up game rather than a team game. Lots of one and done instead of working the ball to create open shots. I suspect that's a large part of McGraw's visible frustration in post game PCs.

NOTRE DAME AT SYRACUSE
When: Sunday, Jan. 5 | 4:00 p.m. ET
Where: Carrier Dome (Syracuse, N.Y.)

Watch: ACCN
Listen: PULSE FM 96.9 / 92.1 / 103.1

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s basketball team will look to make it two in-a-row and a perfect two-game road swing this Sunday when the Irish (6-8, 1-1) travel to New York for matchup at Syracuse (7-6, 1-1). Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET inside the Carrier Dome, airing live on ACC Network, with Jenn Hildreth and LaChina Robinson on the call.

HISTORY WITH SYRACUSE

Notre Dame leads the all-time series against Syracuse, 34-2., and have won 21 straight. In addition, the Irish are 15-1 all-time at Syracuse.

PEOPLES BUILDING ACC FOTY RESUME

Over the last five games, Peoples is averaging a double-double with 14.4 ppg and 11.6 rpg. She’s converted 31-of-66 shots aka 47.0 percent. She has recorded double-digit rebounds four times during that stretch and three double-doubles over the last four games.

In fact her three double-doubles ranks second among freshmen in the ACC, only behind Pitt’s Amber Brown (5).

The freshman garnered career highs in both rebounds (15) and points (22) vs. No. 16 DePaul on Dec. 11.

Peoples has been Notre Dame’s most efficient guard, shooting 48.8 percent on the year, which ranks sixth in the ACC.

Peoples has also been Notre Dame’s most active player on the glass, averaging 8.4 rebounds, which leads the team and ranks 12th in the ACC.

If that wasn’t enough, Peoples is averaging 2.0 steals/game, which leads the team and ranks 2nd in the ACC – only behind Boston College’s Marnelle Garraud (2.4). In ACC play only, Peoples ranks first with 3.5 steals/game.

PEOPLES’ RANK AMONG TRUE FRESHMEN

There are only four true freshmen in the country averaging over 14 ppg and 8 rpg: Anaya Peoples, Texas Tech’s Alexis Tucker, Evansville’s Abby Feit and UC Santa Barbara’s Ila Lane.

Peoples’ 14.1 ppg ranks 16th in the nation among true freshmen, while her 8.4 rpg ranks 10th. Peoples is knocking down 52.0 percent from two, which ranks 10th among true freshmen.

Where her 3 double-doubles ranks: 2nd in the ACC (freshmen only), 2nd in the country (true freshmen guards) and 8th in the country (true freshmen overall).

WELCOME BACK VAUGHN

When the Irish took the court against Clemson on Dec. 29, they welcomed back veteran post player Mikki Vaughn. The Philadelphia native sprained her right knee in the season opener at Fordham – she was closing in on a double-double eight points and nine boards before the injury. Vaughn boasts the most experience in an Irish uniform out of anyone on the team, now playing in 47 games. Vaughn and Prohaska were the only two returning players with significant minutes on last year’s team.

Vaughn came back with a vengeance at Pitt on Jan. 2, tying her career high of 17 points on 8-of-19 shooting. She nearly earned a double-double with nine rebounds.

With two ACC games under her belt now, Vaughn ranks the following in conference play only: 7th in FG% (.500), 3rd in steals (3.0) and 8th in offensive rebounds (3.0).

WALKER WILLS TEAM TO WIN

Walker willed the Irish to victory at Pitt on Jan. 2 in the final minutes: When it was just a one-possession game, the Orlando native recorded an impressive reverse layup at 2:05. Then she dished the assist to Vaughn at 1:33, earned a crucial steal with 23 seconds left, then converted three free throws in the final 20 seconds for the 60-52 win. All-in-all, she totaled 16 points for the game.

Walker has now recorded three consecutive games with double-digit points and five rebounds in each. She is averaging 15.3 ppg in that span.

FRESHMEN DUO SENSATION

Notre Dame women’s basketball has never seen the offensive output from two freshmen like this before – Peoples is averaging 14.1 ppg while Brunelle is at 13.4. There have only been only two other freshmen pairs in program history to finish the season with double-digit scoring averages:

— Arike Ogunbowale (11.4) and Marina Mabrey (10.7) in the 2015-16 season.
— Mary Beth Schueth (13.0) and Carrie Bates (12.4) were the first in the 1981-82 season.

Currently, Notre Dame, UTSA and Fresno State are the only three Division I programs with two true freshmen averaging over 13 points. UTSA is represented by Mikayla Woods (14.0) and Adryana Quezada (13.1), while Fresno State boasts the top pair with Hanna Cavinder (16.4) and Haley Cavinder (16.2).

IF ONLY THEY KEPT THE STAT

If charges taken was an official NCAA kept stat, Marta Sniezek could very well be atop the list in the nation.

The defensive catalyst of the team, Sniezek has taken 17 charges this season. Coach McGraw suspects the program record is around 20 set by Kristina Nelson in the 2017-18 championship season.

All-in-all, Sniezek has taken a charge in seven straight games. Most recently, Sniezek took two at Pitt on Jan. 2.

TURNOVER TURMOIL

In seven games this season, Notre Dame has forced at least 20 turnovers:

Tennessee – 28
Michigan State – 20
Toledo – 21
Michigan – 24
South Dakota State – 22
Clemson – 21
Pitt – 21

Notre Dame ranks 2nd in the ACC in turnovers forced, averaging 18.8 on the year. Furthermore, the Irish boast a +1.3 turnover margin, which ranks 5th in the league. The Irish also rank 3rd in the ACC in steals per game with an 9.0 average.

Speaking of steals, there are three Irish who all rank in the top-six in the ACC in steals: Peoples 2nd with 2.0, Gilbert 5th with 1.9 and Sniezek 6th with 1.9.

I know this season has been rough. But I truly believe this year will make Anaya, Sam, and Katlyn unstoppable in 2 years time. The experience they are gaining and the stats they are putting up will make them so much better once the game slows down a little for them.

This is what I noticed on the couple games I went to as well. I used to get frustrated when Arike would go 1 on 3 when she had someone open but she changed and became a better team player. However she finished well most of the time she did do it. We don't have that happening right now.

ND tied it at 20 early 2ndQ. Then went cold, 1-13. Meanwhile Cuse hit a pair of 3s. Finally Brunnelle hit a trey and Vaughn followed with a hook.

There was concern about Vaughn's knee but announcer said Vaughn complained about her knee brace and an adjustment was made.

Sam ties it at 31! ND had a chance to take the lead but had a shot clock violation. Wonder what McGraw's BP is.

Halftime ties at 31.
