NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame women’s basketball sophomore guard Katlyn Gilbert poured in a career high 25 points against No. 9 N.C. State on Sunday afternoon, but it was the visiting Wolfpack (15-1, 4-1) who left Purcell Pavilion with the 90-56 victory. As a result, the Fighting Irish slipped to 6-11 on the year and 1-4 in ACC play.
Gilbert logged her 15th game in double figures and second of 20+ this season. The Indianapolis native shot 12-of-26 from the floor and tallied 10 points in the first quarter alone.
“N.C. State is a great team. They have all the weapons you need and that’s why they’re ranked in the top-10. Even when I thought we played well defensively, there were so many little things that didn’t go our way,” Karen & Kevin Keyes Family Head Coach Muffet McGraw said. “I thought Kate was our bright spot, but obviously we are struggling to score so we have to figure out how to defend better.”
How It Happened
Notre Dame got off to a 5-0 start behind a Brunelle three-pointer and Gilbert basket; however, N.C. State countered with three separate 6-0 runs during the quarter to claim a 22-15 lead after one. Gilbert powered the Irish offense with 10 points in the period on 5-for-9 shooting.
The Wolfpack outscored the Irish 17-10 in the second to extend its lead to 39-25 at the half. The Irish were only able to connect on three made field goals (3-for-11) for the quarter as Gilbert boasted 15 of the team’s 25 points at the half.
Furthermore, the Irish suffered from the loss of starter Anaya Peoples, who reaggravated her shoulder injury midway through the second quarter and missed the remainder of the game.
N.C. State jumped on a shortened Irish roster in the second half, starting the third on a 16-1 run, before outscoring Notre Dame 30-11 for the period.
Gilbert tacked on 10 more points in the second half to bring her game total to 25. In addition, Nicole Benz got her first points of the season when the junior connected on a late-game three.
Notes
- Today marked the ninth all-time meeting between Notre Dame and N.C. State. The Wolfpack victory gave them their second win as the Irish still lead 7-2.
- Marta Sniezek took a charge today marking her 20th on the season tonight and 10 straight game. The 20 taken charges set a program record.
- Gilbert poured in a career high 25 points on 12-of-26 shooting. It marked her 15th double-digit scoring effort on the year and second 20+ effort. Gilbert had 10 points in the first quarter alone.
- Notre Dame is 66-89 all-time against top-10 ranked opponents.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- North Carolina State rebounded from its first loss of the season with a performance that left Notre Dame's Hall of Fame coach in tears.
Elissa Cunane scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season, and No. 9 North Carolina State trounced Notre Dame 90-56 on Sunday.
"Our plan was to come in here at the jump and play with a lot of energy," said the 6-foot-5 Cunane, who recorded her ninth double-double of the season while playing just 25 minutes for the Wolfpack (15-1, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). "I'm playing hard right now and my teammates are feeding me the ball and I'm able to get rebounds."
Jada Boyd scored 16 points, Kayla Jones added 15 and Kai Crutchfield scored 13 for N.C. State, which shot 57% (34 of 60) for the game after shooting 38% in its 66-60 loss at North Carolina last Thursday.
"We've been pretty consistent with our defense and our rebounding," Moore said. "If you do those things, it will limit bad streaks because you can't always shoot it well."
The Wolfpack outrebounded the Fighting Irish 44-31 and also limited the Irish to 34% shooting (23 of 68).
Katlyn Gilbert scored a career-high 25 points and Destinee Walker had 11 for Notre Dame (6-11, 1-4), which suffered its fifth straight home loss and seventh of the season at Purcell Pavilion, both low marks in Muffet McGraw's 33 seasons on the Irish bench.
"I've got to do better," an emotional McGraw said. "I feel like I can fix it but I didn't. I'm going to keep trying, I'm going to find an answer and I'm going to fix it."
N.C. State coach Wes Moore felt for his colleague, who has won two national titles at Notre Dame. The Irish played in last year's NCAA title game but lost on a last-second shot by Baylor.
"I've got great respect for Notre Dame," Moore said. "I know right now they are short-handed. But they have some good young talent, a top recruiting class coming and you've got Muffet sitting on the bench."
The Wolfpack took the lead for good at 11-9 on Crutchfield's 3-pointer with 6:16 to play in the first quarter. They finished the quarter up 22-15 thanks to 57% shooting (8 of 14) as Cunane had six points and five rebounds. Gilbert had 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting while the rest of the Irish went 2 of 12.
Gilbert added five points in the second quarter, but her last basket at 4:30 was Notre Dame's last of the half. N.C. State took a 39-25 lead to the locker room by hitting 8 of 12 shots with Cunane ending the half with 10 points and six rebounds.
The Wolfpack then had a 16-1 run to start the second half. Cunane hit a 3-pointer to put N.C. State up 44-25 when McGraw called a timeout just 1:09 into the third quarter. Crutchfield's 3-pointer put the Wolfpack up 55-26 when McGraw called her second timeout with 5:21 to play.
"N.C. State is a great team," McGraw said. "They have all the weapons you need. They can go inside, they shoot the ball well. That's why they're ranked in the top 10."
BIG PICTURE
N.C. State: The Wolfpack overcame 13 first-half turnovers thanks to 62% shooting (16 of 26) and holding Notre Dame to 31% (3 of 11). NC State finished with 19 turnovers, five by Cunane and Aislinn Konig) thanks to shooting 63% in the third quarter while outscoring the Irish 30-11.
"It was important that we bounced back from the loss," Moore said. "Elissa didn't have her best game Thursday night (eight points, 13 rebounds). Today she played much better. She still has to cut down on the turnovers. Notre Dame did a great job when they doubled her, and she turned the ball over. We've got to get her to slow down a little bit."
Notre Dame: The Irish went 3:20 without scoring in the first quarter and then ended the second quarter with no field goals in the final 4:30. Top reserve Anaya Peoples, wearing a brace on her right shoulder, left the game and was taken to the locker room 3:06 before halftime. Peoples, who was averaging 13.3 points coming into the game, finished with three points on 1-of-5 shooting from the floor and 1-of-4 from the line.
"She's just relentless. . She never quits," said McGraw, who didn't know the extent of Peoples' injury. "We need the body."

PEOPLES BUILDING ACC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR RESUME
Well, Peoples is certainly building the resume. She leads all ACC freshmen in rebounds (8.1), shooting percentage (.457) and steals (1.9), and ranks second in points (12.6). In fact, Notre Dame boasts the top-two scoring spots among freshmen with Brunelle taking the top spot with 12.9 ppg.
Peoples has recorded double-digit rebounds five times over the last eight games and three double-doubles over the last six games. In fact, her three double-doubles ranks second among freshmen in the ACC, only behind Pitt’s Amber Brown (5).
Peoples’ 8.1 rpg ranks 11th in the ACC and 10th in the nation among true freshmen guards. Peoples also ranks 11th in the ACC in offensive rebounds (2.7) and 13th in defensive boards (5.4).
Peoples has been Notre Dame’s most efficient guard, shooting 45.7 percent on the year, which ranks 7th in the ACC.
If that wasn’t enough, Peoples is averaging 1.9 steals/game, which ranks 5th in the ACC.

ND FRESHMEN STACKING UP HISTORICALLY
Peoples, Brunelle and Gilbert (by eligibility) are on pace to etch their names in the Notre Dame freshmen record books. All three could end up in the top-10 scoring-average list. Gilbert leads the way with her 14.5 ppg, which would rank third. Brunelle averages 12.9, while Peoples averages 12.6.
AS A FRESHMAN
Player / Average / Season
1. Beth Morgan / 17.9 / 1993-94
2. Shari Matvey / 17.6 / 1979-80
3. Alicia Ratay / 14.0 / 1999-00
4. Skylar Diggins / 13.8 / 2009-10
5. Brianna Turner / 13.78 / 2014-15
6. Jacqueline Batteast / 13.77 / 2001-02
7. Mary Beth Schueth / 13.0 / 1981-82
8. Courtney LaVere / 12.8 / 2002-03
9. Jewell Loyd / 12.5 / 2012-13
10. Carrie Bates / 12.4 / 1981-82
In addition, Peoples’ rebounding effort this year (8.1 rpg) would place her third all-time on the freshmen list, ranking behind Shari Matvey (10.2) and Mary Beth Schueth (9.1).
PEOPLES’ RANK AMONG TRUE FRESHMEN
There are only six true freshmen in the country averaging over 12.5 ppg and 8 rpg: Anaya Peoples, Texas Tech’s Alexis Tucker, Evansville’s Abby Feit, UC Santa Barbara’s Ila Lane, South Carolina’s Aliyah Boston and Oregon State’s Taylor Jones. Of that group, Peoples does boast the most steals.
Furthermore, Peoples’ 12.6 ppg ranks 30th in the nation among true freshmen, while her 8.1 rpg ranks 12th.
TRENDING: DESTINEE WALKER
Since the turn of the new decade, Walker has posted the sixth highest scoring average in the ACC with her 18.3 ppg.
Count it up, it’s been six straight games in double figures for Walker, which includes three of 20+ points. In fact, Walker leads the team with her four 20+ scoring games, which also ties her career best.
Ultimately, Walker is averaging 16.6 ppg in ACC play, which ranks 7th. Also, she’s converting 78.6 percent of her free throws in league play, which ranks 10th.

HEATING UP??
After suffering from a 1-of-15 stretch from three from Dec. 4-Jan. 2, Sam Brunelle is beginning to heat up from beyond the arc. Over the last three games, Brunelle has connected on 7-of-19 from deep, aka 36.8 percent.
WELCOME BACK VAUGHN
Vaughn suffered an ACL sprain in her right knee in the season opener and missed the next 11 games. The junior returned to the team for the start of ACC play, where she has provided a nice boost for the Irish.
Vaughn returned against Clemson on Dec. 29, but really settled in at Pitt (1/2) – tying her career high of 17 points, while almost earning a double-double with nine rebounds. Vaughn then carried momentum into Syracuse (1/5) with her first career double-double, recording 16 points and a career-high tying 11 boards.
She has been highly efficient from the field since returning, converting 58.5 percent from the floor. She has also been a beast on the offensive glass, reeling in at least five offensive rebounds in three of the last four games. In fact, her 3.2 offensive rebounds/game in ACC play ranks 5th.
Vaughn has garnered multiple blocks in four consecutive games. Her 2.0 blocks/game ranks 3rd in ACC play only.
In ACC play only: 15th in rebounds (6.4), 5th in offensive rebounds (3.2), 12th in steals (1.8) and 3rd in blocks (2.0).
FRESHMEN DUO SENSATION
Notre Dame women’s basketball has never seen the offensive output from two freshmen like this before – Peoples is averaging 12.6 ppg while Brunelle is at 12.9. There have only been only two other freshmen pairs in program history to finish the season with double-digit scoring averages:
— Arike Ogunbowale (11.4) and Marina Mabrey (10.7) in the 2015-16 season.
— Mary Beth Schueth (13.0) and Carrie Bates (12.4) were the first in the 1981-82 season.
Currently, Notre Dame, UTSA and Fresno State are the only three Division I programs with two true freshmen averaging over 13 points. UTSA is represented by Mikayla Woods (14.8) and Adryana Quezada (13.0), while Fresno State boasts the top pair with Hanna Cavinder (16.4) and Haley Cavinder (16.3).
IF ONLY THEY KEPT THE STAT
If charges taken was an official NCAA kept stat, Marta Sniezek could very well be atop the list in the nation.
The defensive catalyst of the team, Sniezek has taken 20 charges this season, which breaks the record set by Kristina Nelson during the 2017-18 championship season.
All-in-all, Sniezek has taken a charge in 10 straight contests.
Her most impressive week came on the Cancun trip. The Virginia native took a charge against FGCU, four against South Dakota State and then four again vs. USF in Cancun.
On a completely different defensive note – Sniezek is averaging 2.1 steals/game, which ranks 3rd in the ACC. The Virginia native captured a career high six steals at Syracuse on Jan. 5.

SNIEZEK DIMES
Sniezek is averaging 5.9 assists/game which ranks 10th in the nation and 2nd in the ACC – only behind Virginia Tech’s Taja Cole (6.4). In addition, her 1.3 A/TO ratio ranks 13th in the league.
Sniezek boasts two double-digit assist performances, which ties UNC’s Shayla Bennett for the most in the league. Her 12-assist performance against No. 16 DePaul on Dec. 11, tied for the league high for an individual game.
In ACC play only, Sniezek is averaging 6.0 assists/game, which ranks 3rd.
NOTRE DAME — A season wrought with frustration reached a new low Sunday.
The Notre Dame women's basketball team lost at home to ninth-ranked NC State by 34 points.
It drops the team's record to 6-11 and marks the first time in program history that Notre Dame has lost five consecutive home games.
No one has taken these losses harder than Muffet McGraw. The Hall of Fame head coach and two-time national champion is navigating uncharted waters.
Notre Dame hasn't had a losing season in women's basketball since 1992, and once her teams started winning in the mid-90s, they never stopped.
Following Sunday's loss, McGraw was asked how difficult this season has been and she couldn't hold back the emotions.

"I just gotta do better,” said McGraw. “I feel like I can fix it, but I didn’t. I'm gonna keep trying, I'm going to find an answer, and I'm gonna fix it.
So how does she go about fixing it?
One problem that can't be fixed overnight is depth. Notre Dame has a starter in Abby Prohaska out for the year and another in Anaya Peoples, who left Sunday's game with a shoulder injury, the severity of which is unknown right now.
McGraw's team have battled adversity before and come out stronger because of it. The Hall of Famer's not about to stop battling or believing.
"We're gonna keep battling,” said McGraw. “We're gonna keep fighting and we're gonna keep practicing and I think we're going to get better. It could turn at any moment. I think we're good enough. I really believe that we're good enough. We just haven't had that game where everybody plays well at the same time."
Notre Dame's next chance to have that game and end this slide is on Thursday. The Irish play at Duke.
