"Along with the training seminar, students will be required to attend the White Privilege Conference after the training class from March 8-14. The course description claims the main objective for each student is “personal transformation: to leave the class and conference more aware of injustices and better equipped with tools to disrupt personal, institutional, and worldwide systems of oppression.”"

Disrupt...such a clever word choice in the face of so many appropriate, non combative substitutes like "address", "deal with", "help identify and educate those engaged in"...Can't help but walk away thinking this is less about fostering change in a constructive fashion where it is needed, and more about an angry, identity-based political agenda...but I'll withhold final judgment until I hear from some of you young folks who choose to attend.

It's actually getting some semi-national coverage on a couple media outlets... for all the wrong reasons. The comments on the Fox News article are cringe worthy.

At ND, some people are taking umbrage to the fact that the person leading this class is the same person who has tried to censor opinions she doesn't agree with on campus and was also part of the "firing Ty was RACIST" crowd back in the day that was absurdly ignorant.

I thought it was a course that taught how to acquire some of that sweet White Privilege I keep hearing about.

Sorry, you can't acquire it unless you had white parents adopt you. At least, that's what I'm told.

Aren't those essentially prerequisites to teach such a course?

Anita Sarkesian is the instructor then I presume.

There is a massive concern on campus to appear "diverse enough" to prospective students. This seems like another outgrowth of that concern to me. Same group of people hyping the course. All I know is that I will not be taking this course.

I thought this was a pre-req to attend ND. Why would ND have a course for what their students have enjoyed their entire lives?

They're crazy there is no such thing as white privilege! Also racism is over and no one is suffering except for white men who are called racist.

That's just sad. Call me crazy but if I'm going to spend exorbitant amounts of money to send my child to ND I want them to learn about real things and actual academic courses. Not the delusional ramblings of some left wing race baiter.

It's not a required course, is it?

You're going to be in for a rough time if you expect to send your kids to college and not have their status quo and their beliefs challenged. Maybe you should just send your kids to Liberty or BYU if you don't want your kids to be aware of the plight of others. The Catholic Church and social justice go together. Go to a protestant sect if you don't want your kids to care about others.

Considering the founder of Liberation Theology is a professor at ND, I don't get why a class that wants to give students the "tools to disrupt personal, institutional, and worldwide systems of oppression" is all that surprising.

To be fair, I think most Mormons are well aware of the plight of others, considering how many of them (the Mormons, not "others") do missions in very poor areas of not just the US, but the world.

You live in a delusional world. Median household income in the US has decreased 8% since 2008, and that my friend applies to all races.

That's all warm and fuzzy. Christians everywhere teach caring for the poor and giving to the needy. If you disagree with someone about the root causes of poverty and/ or the solutions, that does not equal hate or not caring. It's a philosophical difference.

No one preaches more hate and racism on this board, still, than you.

Right? Disrupting oppression is a good thing.

Wow. So as a Catholic, am I guilty?

Also how do you root for for a school that embraces the teachings of such a hateful institution.

Depends. If you're a middle or upper class white individual with a "D" behind your name, you're a noble person fighting for the "oppressed" and the "poor."

If you're a middle or upper class white individual with an "R" behind your name, you are greedy and don't care about the poor.

That's the narrative.

This isn't the thread to discuss it in great detail, so all I will say is:

-IMO: Mormons don't give two craps about the plight of others
-IMO: All those missions serve a purpose that isn't as warm and fuzzy as they appear
