So, just for the sake of discussion, lets assume Orlovsky knows something and Rees does leave for the Rams.

Who do you guys want to bring in as the next OC?

As a Rees supporter I'd want him to stay, but he'd be foolish not to take the opportunity to go to the Rams if it presented itself. That could easily be a springboard to a HC job if he does well, and that job is setup for you to do well.

Now I know were only talking Rams/Rees because of Orlovsky - but McVay has been a HC a total of 5 years and already has had 4 assistants become head coaches. If Rees were to get that offer, I would hope he would take it

I like Tommy Rees and all and I hope he has a long and fruitful career but as a Notre Dame fan first and foremost I absolutely would NOT hope he takes it.

We can't sustain this level of coaching turnover right now. We have a head coach with no offensive experience. We just rebuilt the entire offensive staff. We're behind on recruiting on offense for '23 as it is. And THEN you have to go find a new OC - potentially with a new system and all that - at the back end of the coach hiring cycle? Would be a total mess. Not to mention the situation in the QB room that he also leads.

The NFL will still be there next year if that's what Tommy's after.

After everything that's happened since Kelly left after that Stanford game, this would really be something. That would be a significantly huge hire for Freeman, probably the most important one of them all.

I hope it doesn't happen.

Yeah my take on Tommy staying is I don't know if Notre Dame can win a national championship with him as OC and QB coach BUT Marcus Freeman sure isn't going to get fired with Tommy as OC (unless he allows the defense to just fall apart which I can't see him doing).

I don't think Marcus Freeman is fully sure about what he's looking for in an offense and in an OC just yet. I'm sure he's got a general idea but he'll have a better idea after coaching for at least 1 season. Rather ND wins a natty or not I don't expect Rees at ND more than 3 seasons BUT I'd be more confident in Marcus Freeman hiring a new OC after he gets 1-2 seasons under his belt.

I don't know if Rees can get the ND offense to the promise land but I think it's real important to Marcus Freeman that he coaches at least through the 2022 season.

It would probably help if they got a top tier QB who will compete for a Heisman and get drafted in the first round along with talent and depth at QB. Considering what Rees was working with these past couple of years since he became OC, I'm pretty impressed with what he was able to do. That first half of the Fiesta Bowl was a snippet.

They need quality and quantity on the roster. Freeman, Rees, McCullough and Stuckey can get them there.

not my fantasy

That's good, because as far as I can tell, all they did was hire a TE coach. He's not coming to learn everyone in NW Indiana the Air Raid offense or sitting as a place holder to take Rees' spot at OC in a few years.

McNulty left and they filled his vacant job with Parker. Fire Mike Brey, end of story.

I don't know if it is who I would want but I feel pretty certain the OC gig would be enough to lure Hartline over and that would probably be Freeman's first call.

Interesting question. My first thought might be give Parker OC and bring in Jerrod Johnson as QB coach. He's currently Colts QC coach.

All things being equal, I'd like a couple of guys who just recently took new jobs:

Joe Brady, Buffalo Bills QB Coach
Brennan Marion, Texas WR Coach (he was previously an OC and QB coach before Pitt and Texas)
Garret Riley, TCU OC
Brad Glenn, Virginia Tech OC
Joe Moorhead, Akron HC

If you'd rather not poach anyone who hasn't found the water cooler yet:

GJ Kinne from UCF
Keith Heckendorf, Arkansas State
Brian Brohm, Purdue
Warren Ruggiero, Wake Forest
Willy Korn, Coastal Carolina

I will say everyone seemed to think a position coach for just 5 roster spots was silly and we should be adding someone who brings more to the table that just TE coaching.

Then we hire a TE coach with no real history of producing TEs and we want to say he wasnt brought here to do anything else but coach TEs.

Just trying to understand which way were looking at this job.

The problem with this is bringing in Hartline would require ND being a-holes and either firing Porter or Stuckey . Because even if Hartline is OC they would still need a QB coach .

I think Tommy getting the Rams OC job is about as realistic as Orlovsky saying CW should consider ND but if that time were to come you’d almost have to go the route of someone with QB cache. That’s a limited amount of available college guys and potentially larger amount of NFL guys. Look at what Weiss did with McNamara. Coen who is mentioned by Orlovsky with Levis, who I really don’t think is that good but was a giant step up for UK. Brady with Burrow. This seems like a rarely given take but is obvious when typed out, most NFL coaches are simply better coaches than college ones haha. Those three were Ravens RB coach, Rams Assistant QB Coach, Saints Offensive Assistant so it seems dumb but I’d mine NFL trees like that first. That’s what the NFL GMs are doing too in many regards. Likely a short term hire but it’d take the jump start because that’s what we need (right now)

It is exceptionally rare for college coaches to make jumps to the NFL in a coordinator+ role. If that actually happened with Rees, I would be floored.

I just don't think everything is some kind of layered conspirator decision of orchestral maneuvers in the dark. They needed a TE coach. The guy they hired coached TEs at Purdue where the current ND HC was coaching with him at the time. He's coached WR since coaching TE, which isn't tremendously far off. It's like not switching sides of the ball (Chuck Martin comes to mind?).

I'm sure he's going to be in the room bouncing ideas with the other guys in there, but I have a hard time believing he's coming in for the purpose of overhauling the offense Rees is going run. How many scholarship WR is ND going to have in 2022? They're going to have to adapt to their roster, yet again, and make due with what they have until they can get a couple more cycles completed.

For me, it is what it is until we see or hear otherwise. They hired a TE coach who hasn't specifically coached TE in a while. I'll have a Mary Jane gummy tonight and chill because I'm not terribly bothered by it.

On the latest Shamrock episode, Fortuna said that someone who knows both Rees and McVay told him that McVay "has a man crush on Tommy Rees."

So, yeah.............

I’d try to steal Joe Brady from his new gig at Buffalo… but idk if you’re pulling that guy back from the NFL at this point.

I swear to God if Harbaugh blowing an interview with the Vikings somehow === Rees to the Rams I will lose my fucking mind. How on earth does McVay have a "man crush" on Tommy Rees? When have they even crossed paths?

These guys network, especially at the highest level. They talk. They eat, breathe, sleep and shit football. He's probably watched ND games. Saw Rees call games with what he had.

As for Kliff Kingsbury, he was fired by Texas Tech. Fired. His defenses there never ranked higher than 87th in the nation when he was head coach. He was somehow hired as an NFL head coach.

So since we're talking about transparency and the NFL coaching hiring process this week, somebody needs to explain that one to me because I can't figure it out.

Rees and McVay crossed paths in Washington, his week-long stint on their practice squad.

McVay was the OC in Washington when Rees signed to the practice squad after going undrafted. Looks like Rees was only there a week, but McVay may have researched and interviewed Rees before signing and perhaps kept in touch afterwards.

I know Rees watches a lot of film of McVay's offense. I'm sure he's probably reached out to McVay for advice. The man crush goes both directions.

We know Rees isn’t here for the money or else he would’ve bolted to LSU. It’s safe to assume he was OC with one hand tied behind his back while BK was here. He is practically co-HC with MF and can run his offense without interference. He isn’t calling plays if he goes to the Rams. It’s a dangerous career move if it’s even a real thing.

There’s a number of candidates for the Rams to promote from within and outside. Greg Olson and Liam Coen both worked directly with McVay and are rumored to be considered. Then they have a few candidates on staff.

I always caveat with never say never but this one would be really out there.

Geez guys, the odds of the Rams going after Rees as a #1 are so slim. The Rams might win a superbowl and have an elite QB and offense for the forseeable future. They can do better than Rees, no offense to Tommy.
