Was listening to the Driskell podcast and sounds like team is going to or leaning towards Keeping Del for another year. I just hope this doesn’t mean we lose guys to tranfer

Option A: Keeping Del is critical to keeping that room together and recruiting at a higher level than he's shown capable of.
Option B: They dont think anyone can do any better and Tommy is committed to RTDB with an all blocking WOPU receiving corp.
Option C: There is no news leaking through any other reporters. fans are asking constantly. Driskell decides to say some stuff he can easily walk back later.

That he acted and coached scared under Kelly. He was scared of the ass-chewings from Kelly, hence why he would rather play it safe from mistakes with lesser and/or lesser talent rather the better/explosive talent that might be more mistake prone.

Yikes. That’s even worse than I thought. Total failure by the program’s leadership to bring him back if they seriously think he can do the job. Del’s the definition of coaching dead weight and he’s single-handedly bringing the offense down.

No doubt, I hope they move on but I don't think its a sure thing, maybe a 2/3 go to a 1/3 stay.

So true. In this moment, I’m fully prepared for this game to not go our way. But, when gameday comes, I’m sure I’ll be hopped up on ND off-season kool-aid, ready to run through a brick wall for Freeman, and be let down when it goes exactly how I think it will now.

Sampson also touched on the Mike Tressel suggestion. Suggested in his opinion Tressel would seem ideal. They kinda tossed around if the report of Tressel not being an option was a bit of a smokescreen. Sampson then said not to judge him based off his next game.

Lotta talk for someone supposedly not a real candidate at this time….

Then again my gut tells me Ryan Day is the next coach of my Chicago Bears (not a fan of the idea) and Fickell is coming home to OSU. So we might as well take what we want from them.

By the way I am a Bears fan but I'll gladly trade the Bears sucking for 10 years if it means ND gets Hartline from OSU and stays elite for another decade / wins a natty or 2 along the way.

Personal rule of thumb - whatever Driskell says, I believe the opposite.

At a position where multiple schools have reputations for developing 3 star recruits into draft picks, I want the best teacher.

At a position where the top draft picks basically solely come from the highest rated recruits, I want the best recruiter.

One coach has not worked with the current expanded recruiting department and was still able to get good classes.

One coach has worked with the current expanded recruiting department and still could not put us in a position to get better.

Del gets no credit for the improvements made by Chase, Miles, Javon? Was Skoronek a sure fire NFLer before ND?

I'm not saying Del is perfect or should/shouldn't be retained. But if MF thinks that's the right move there are reasons for it as well reasons to believe there will be changes implemented in WR recruiting. Something that should help is landing a big time QB (something out of Del's control).

Driskell was pretty adamant on multiple recent podcasts that he hasn't heard jack shit so he's ASSUMING Del is coming back. Not sure why anyone would take that as gospel.

Thanks for making a great point. I’m sure there are also many behind the scenes details and reasons that might warrant Freeman keeping Del on staff another season. We’ll have to see what he decides, so until then, the doomsday crowd should consider taking a few days off for the holiday.

I watched the IB podcast. Seems like they would definitely move off Del if there was a slam dunk hire available.

Just unclear if there isn't a sure fire grand slam candidate available they move off Del regardless and do a search.

Seems like with the o-line coaches reached out to them, and it hasn't been the case for WR.

#172, #203, and #114 overall in their classes. And, what, 1 is an NFL starter? With similar levels of talent in guys like Stanley, McGlinchey, Martin, etc. Hiestand has turned out several pro-bowlers.

Im sure Del is a good guy, maybe even a good coach, but I sincerely hope MF and Tommy see that his time at ND has passed.

From hearing MF's thoughts about Tommy's autonomy with the offense, I have to believe the lions share of this decision is on him.

Very strongly agree on both points. I’m hoping Austin returns to work on the release issue and to gain consistency. He’s got the talent to be a draft pick, but he’s gotta clean some stuff up….

Yes also by Loy’s account of who’s reaching out….the guys we reached out to our the better candidates. Hiestand and Frye. The guys calling about the position are guys like Barnett at Iowa (struggled year 1), Rudolph at Wisconsin (hot seat, might go to Va Tech for a graceful exit), and someone I can’t recall who’s out of work after being in the NFL.

Lol, this tickles my insides. The partial reality of your post is comedically bad. Go count how many additional 4 stars we signed on the OL that never materialized. The whole point is we need more 4 stars so we don't need 100% hit rate at WR. We are stacking some ridiculous talent on the OL and we need to hit on 5 of 18 incredibly talented players. In contrast, we need to hit on every single receiver because the room is in dire straits.

Hiestand turned out pro-bowlers with great teaching and great recruited talent. I think we all want both.

The whole point is we need more 4 stars so we don't need 100% hit rate at WR. We are stacking some ridiculous talent on the OL and we need to hit on 5 of 18 incredibly talented players. In contrast, we need to hit on every single receiver because the room is in dire straits.

Hiestand turned out pro-bowlers with great teaching and great recruited talent. I think we all want both.

But that also ignores the four star receivers that never materialized. Maybe if someone needs to get away from family over the next two days they can figure out the hit rate for different talent levels on the two positions.
