Agree with the fumble, but that was absolutely perfect technique by the navy player to punch that out
IIRC, the announcers pointed out that the wet conditions likely led to the fumble. Not saying it did or didn’t but I’m hoping it did.

I know that it was "just Navy", and Navy might suck.

But, they sucked last year and damn near beat ND.

Even if they suck, kicking their ass like that was a very good thing.

Sneed, zero mentions? He's not good enough to play against Navy? I'll have to rewatch and look for him.
The box score shows he played with a couple of tackles but I don’t remember seeing him or hearing his name called either. 20 different players had at least one tackle.

This is the frustrating part of this game. The offense looked sharp. A few things they need to polish up, but it’s game one. The great thing about football is teams and players can improve as the season progresses.

Defensively? You simply just can’t tell. There’s such a discrepancy of talent and size. Also, that style of play will not be seen again, and Navy was no threat to pass at all. That said, even though they only attempted 7 passes, some of their players were notably open. I remember one play in the 3rd quarter specifically where DJ Brown was torched. Horrible, horrible throw by the QB. Just putrid. Anyone else and that’s a 70 yard TD. Thomas Harper was torched on a 30ish yard pass in the 4th. I believe they also had a similar wide-open (that was an incompletion) in the first quarter. Is it poor defensive coverage or is it Navy’s unconventional scheme? Does their scheme lull the DBs to sleep? You really can’t tell.

You got the win and “got this one out of the way.” That’s the most important thing. Now get back across the pond and prepare for the season.

And Shrader, for the love of God, drill the field goals. That wasn’t too challenging of a kick….
Like you said, time will tell b/c the only thing I’m going to truly judge a secondary on vs Navy is their tackling in space. I think the kids were finally convinced that Navy was no threat to pass on them & then got caught peeking into the backfield a few times they did. We’ll know more after NCSt. With Navy, you want to put them away, avoid injury and then immediately turn focus back on defending traditional offenses.

Only thing that disappointed me on Kiser & JD was when they tried to tackle the ball carrier up high. That little Navy running back broke multiple tackles despite being contacted early by one of those LBs. Hopefully, they learned their lesson moving forward as the RB will continue to get bigger & stronger.

They were trying to tackle the football and get a turnover, it’s a fine balance

Also, can we keep Collinsworth's replacement in the booth? I thought that guy was fantastic. Pair him up with someone who is only half the wet blanket that is Garrett and we'd have some good game coverage. Someone get word in to NBC/AD.
Yeah, I don't typically care about these things but I thought Eagle did great compared to what we've grown use to.

I must be getting old b/c I had to strain my ears to try to tell who carried or caught the ball when it was a first time starter whose # I didn’t recognize. Then they rarely flashed their names on the screen after a big play.

FWIW, in Rees’s first ever game as OC, which was the 2019 Camping World Bowl beat down of ISU, he put Ian Book under center.

And he did that with Book, with somewhat regularity thereafter.

Hartman under center and in Rees’s pro spread offense was the plan from Rees all along. Partly why Hartman came here.

Playing him on the inside doesn't utilize his strengths! Just like with Jaylon
Against Navy it’s kind of hard to utilize his strengths outside or on the edge. I think we’ll see a much more exciting role for him from here on out.

Other observations.

I don’t think Nana will out snap JJB the rest of the way. Similarly, I think we’ll see Harper and Carter worked in more aggressively. I think the staff chose to go with experience versus the triple option and we can’t complain.

So many positives from the game I’ll touch on later when I have more time but some negatives I saw after watching game twice

Henderson and dj brown played a lot and didn’t do much, pretty much missed on all their opportunities to make a play. Watts was late early but then played much better

Jd was a hair late most of the game

I don’t see it from junior, I think and hope Burnham gets more of his reps. He seems better

Nana is solid but baptiste seems better, seems obvious

Coogan to me was the most inconsistent olinemen but supposedly won battle due to consistency

Tobias drop, he played a lot but needs to get going next week

Evans was only ok for how much he played. I thought staes blocked better actually

Wtf was the end of game offensive calls from Parker

Amazing how many times our corners still got surprised on somewhat obvious passing plays

Yes and I suspect Kiser plays more inside. He was practically lining up at corner on some plays.
But that’s Navy; you go with the guys who’ve seen it before. Sneed will play a bigger role against more traditional offenses.

No, it definitely wasn’t just you. These dudes were talking about some weird shit throughout the game. All I wanted them was to name players when they made plays. Instead, we had to listen to them talk about stuff not related to the game. There was one play where X Watts came up and made a big tackle, and of course, they said nothing because they were too busy chatting nonsense.
Yeah I had to pull up the roster on that one, and several others.

They ran behind Coogan a lot & he drove dudes back all game.
The one pressure they blamed on Coogan was Love’s fault, he didn’t pick it up.
Parker called an EXCELLENT game plan.
At the end they were trying to get Estime to 100 yards.

Get that but not the jet sweep and running pass … Coogan did move bodies in the run game but I thought was slow in some pass pro

This seems a far cry from "Coogan to me was the most inconsistent olinemen but supposedly won battle due to consistency"

Watched the game back and it was about as impressive as it was live the first time around.

I like 47 on the DL. I think he's going to play a key role in the wars to come. Very hard to get any kind of inclination of what the DBs are going to be like. Linebacker play looks quite solid, and Mr. Sneed is going to really have to show up day in and day out to overtake any of these lads who are starting ahead of him. I think it will eventually lead to good things for him.

Hartman makes a world of difference for the skill people around him. These WR are going to flourish having a dude back there who can do what he does.

Lots of offensive talent on this team and they will need it come NC State.

Tyson Ford really couldn't get a snap? One to watch... really hope he sticks it out.

JD and Kiser are fine players that will always have a place, but I think MF will slow production on that ND LB captain assembly line of Joe Schmidt, Drew White, JD, etc, and go big game hunting. He’s already started.

(LB needs a Teo type bell cow. It’s really that easy. Just recruit a generational talent, beat out 100+ other programs for his services, and then get a Heisman year out of him lol)

The rest of the oline played really really good, so yes he was the most inconsistent imo… doesn’t mean he was terrible
