The games in Ireland are cool but I wonder what Notre Dame gets out of it? I can't see them making any more money out of this then a home game. It's got to cost the AD a ton to fly the team to Ireland and house them. I can't see there being a huge Irish fan base they want to cater to. I talked to people who went to the 2012 game; they said every single person they met was there from the States.

Is it brand awareness? It's a big deal so it draws attention to Notre Dame as an academic institution? Not that ND is hurting for name recognition. And there's no way you can sell this to me as a recruitment strategy. "We've got to rotate a game to Ireland every ten years to tap into that rich Dublin H.S. talent base."

Maybe it's truly a selfless act from the school. The players like it. The fans love it. Maybe that's enough for the ND powers that be.

Pretty sure this is Navy's home game. Navy probably does it per ND's request.

Would love to go, as I'm sure everyone here would. The reality of it happening however isn't likely.

this is false, it costs ND nothing and as all costs are absorbed by the organizers

I hate this game for selfish reasons. I know they’re all young & healthy vs folks like us who are twice their age but I hate that they have to come back the following week and play a P5 team. I’ll be shocked if it’s not a close game vs Arkansas. Keep in mind, this will be Arkansas’ first visit EVER to Notre Dame Stadium. Unfortunately, ND hasn’t exactly dominated below-avg to average teams making their maiden voyage to South Bend.

And now, ND has to worry about jet-lag amongst the disruptions to their routine that come w/ this overseas travel. I remember in 2012 after ND dominated Navy in Ireland they came back home to eke out a win over a bad Purdue team. Would they have played down to Purdue regardless of the previous week’s travel? No idea, but I like their odds to take care of business if they didn’t have to contend w/ that or if they had a bye week in between. I’m doubly selfish b/c if Arkansas upsets the Irish, I will NEVER hear the end of it from my fellow Arkansans.

Awesome. Thanks for clarifying as I could’ve sworn I read there was no off week between games. Glad I was incorrect.

It was originally scheduled to be back-to-back weeks, but ND got approval to move the game to 'week zero,' essentially creating an extra bye.

If anyone is going to get one of those packages, I can't recommend the one with Kerry enough. The place is absolutely stunning and Killarney is a great town.

Who are the organizers? And why is this game different that it doesn't costs ND any money for travel and lodging than any other away game?

Irish American Events Ltd. Backed by Aer Lingus (Ireland's national airline) Bord Failte (Irish Tourism Board) and the Irish Government themselves. These games are tourism events basically to stimulate local economy.

Is/will there be other ways to get tickets to the game without buying one of the over priced packages?

Wife just finished booking the hotel. Working on a bus for Temple Bar and Game Day. Would love to meet some of you hooligans face to face.

Have access to a train about 500 yards from the hotel. Not entirely sure of the practicality. Any experience would be greatly appreciated, We are staying at the Grand Malahide (sp. ?).

Cheers and Go Irish!!

Is taking this game to Ireland about promoting the sport? If so it seems like a strange game to take seeing as it isnt exactly expected to be a specticle or a representation of american football at the highest levels.

It's probably the highest level Ireland can attract. They tried for many years to get an NFL game (especially when Rooney was ambassador) but they couldn't swing it for whatever reason.

Yep you take the DART (train system in Dublin) from Malahide Stattion southbound (Greystones/Bray) until Lansdowne Road which is the station attached to the Aviva Stadium (train runs under the East Stand). www.dart.ie is the website you can buy tickets at the station, no need to prebook and it will cost about 5 bucks or so for a return ticket.

One could argue that ND is bigger than NFL...

NFL has much higher visibility than ND/CFB though. ND games aren't on tv in Ireland unless they are playing on ESPN. NBC has no affiliate anymore in Europe (used to be Eurosport but even when they had the license they would show snooker, darts or motorbike racing instead and then compact ND games into 1 hour highlights at ridiculous hours of the night

Greatly appreciate the info Dublin! I had been told it was pretty easy but was a bit skeptical. Might not rent a coach for game day.

ah you'd hardly need to. the train is handy, no connections required it will bring you all the way into town (Tara Street Station) and then onto Lansdowne for the stadium

Trying to decide if I want to go to this game or the ND/Wisky game in Lambeau.
I really really want to do the Dublin trip since it’s such a special event.
Just not sure if I can talk my buddies to forking out that kind of cash for a football game.
Lambaue would still be an awesome trip and cheaper but I feel it would not nearly be as much fun.
May go by myself if the locals here think that’s a wise decision

Yes my question was not suggesting that ND football isnt a particular level of football, it was more the style of the NAVY game (triple option) not being the typical type of game for the highest level.

Looks like Irish American Events Ltd. needs to update their website. It features a game from 2016 with BC and when you click on any tab there is no response, just a standard Latin text "filler" statement.

I went to Lambeau for the first time last fall (albeit for the Packers) but it is an awesome venue. if you do that, do yourself a favor and pay for the Lambeau tour at some point the day before or morning of the game; affordable and pretty neat.

Just don't make the same mistake I did and spend more time in Green Bay than you need to. There is quite literally nothing to do. Milwaukee and Madison are both a lot of fun though and not too far. You can also check out the Upper Peninsula, amazing Fall foliage in October and scenic spots to explore like Pictured Rocks.

You can't go wrong either way though; I've also been to Ireland, and had an amazing time. Would be worth every penny.
