Just wondering who you think might emerge as the 2013 Captains? Offense I think is a bit easier than defense.

My picks offense: Z. Martin and T.J. Jones

My picks defense: B. Jax and D. Spond

There is an article on rivals about this and they were saying Farley could get notice, so there is no rule that you have to be a senior under Kelly.

On a side note if Z. Martin is a captain he will be the first repeat captain since Maurice Crum and Brady Quinn.

How about Rees? I know could be awkward to have a non-starter QB, but this is the kind of scenario where that might work. Dude's a gamer, seems to be well-liked, and is clearly a team-first sort of guy.

Could see him and ZMart, Bennett Jackson and either Fox or Nix (Nix may not be a "vocal" leader, but he is a leader).

That would not surprise me (Rees) and I think it would be a pretty cool message about the importance of everyone on the team.

I agree with you. But I have heard a little I can trust from the spring, and what stood out was his "drivenness".

Does anybody know if even though the coach allows other than senior captains, if they want them to be a "majority of the snaps" kind of player?

Wasn't Manti a defensive captain with Harrison Smith his Junior year?

I think we had game captains Manti's junior year. Not sure about the majority of snaps, that could make it hard to predict particularly at the LB spot.

Kelly has what he calls The Leadership Group. If you know who is in that group you could probably pick four.

Coach will pick two offense and two defense, obviously, but not necessarily seniors. [see ZMart]. He also will not necessarily pick VOCAL on-field players [see Eifert]. The big question in my mind is will he always pick starters. If non-starters are an option, then Kelly shows a lot of leadership affection for not only Rees but also, very surprisingly, Stockton.

For what it's worth, Big Lou thinks that The Prince is the vocal on field leader of the front defense. Diaco thinks that Grace is natural-born to the job. But Bennett seems a shoe-in for one D-spot.

With all that: I think Kelly gives O to ZMart and TJ. {TJ is this year's analogy to the quiet captain, Eifert, and Kelly is honoring senior effort, professionalism, production when he can}. On defense, Bennett gets one and maybe The Prince the other. I actually think that Coach likes walking an intimidator out there --- ZMart/ Eifert/ Te'o/ KLM looked the parts --- so Nix and Shembo would be better [Shembo is very intimidating in uniform], but I think Jackson is a natural fit here.

funny you mention Rees. I was kinda thinking the same thing, I have seen some interaction of him and his teammates and i think he is highly respected. as crazy as it sounds, Rees has emerged as a leader, whether that translates to being named a capitain, I'm not sure.

One of these things is not like the others.

If Heggie isn't the lone captain this year, I will lose all faith in ND and become a fan of whatever team Gunner Keil has chosen this week.

Defense: Jackson, Shembo
Offense: Martin, Golson

I think Golson is showing tremendous leadership and you make him a captain and I know he will rise to the occasion to make sure he communicates and shows those leadership qualities.

Tommy would be an awful pick. Now that EG has finally grown into more of a leadership position why would you want to put the captain label on his backup? Do nothing to rattle his confidence, especially considering how fragile he was last year after getting yanked for Tommy several times.

I agree with this. As much as I like Tommy, Stockton, and a few other guys who have tremendous leadership, I think the captains should either be someone who plays a huge role (i.e. starter) on offense/defense or a special teams mainstay. But I think it needs to be someone who is on the field a lot, one who interacts with the team the most during games. Tommy likely doesn't have much interaction on game days outside of the QB's.

I certainly don't think Tommy would be an awful pick, but I definitely understand this line of thinking. It is hard to put a finger on the leadership dynamic of a team. I can envision scenarios where it would be a brilliant pick to name Tommy. I don't think anyone has to worry about EG being to fragile to understand that as a senior who has excelled at his role on the team, as small or as big as that role may be, with a great attitude, Tommy may be deserving. I think EG would understand that he is the on the field leader and that the role as captain is still out there for him. They are teammates and I don't think an acknowledgement for one, necessarily diminishes the other. "IF" it did then this might even be a great lesson on team for the offended party and prove to be a benefit down the road.
