LSU's Jalen Mills Arrested for 2nd Degree Battery

The victim, who notified authorities, stated she was at Mills’ apartment complex when she knocked on Mills’ door looking for her friend. Mills opened the door then closed it in the victim’s face so she knocked again. When no one came to the door the victim walked away down the hall. She stated she heard someone say something to her while walking away and when she turned around Mills punched her in the mouth. She fell to the pavement and was unconscious briefly, according to the report. The victim required 4 stitches in her lip as a result of the attack.

...

Mills’ identification lists his height as 6’0″, 195 lbs. The victim’s identification lists her height as 5’3″, 113 lbs.

Janzen Jackson charged with murder.

Janzen Jackson was a prized young football player, a defensive back who donned an orange-and-white University of Tennessee uniform in 2009 after ranking among the top recruiting prospects in the nation.

On Friday, Jackson quietly entered a courthouse in downtown Los Angeles in a yellow shirt and blue pants issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and was charged with murder.

In the back of the courtroom, an elderly woman named Mina Ribaldi sat in a uniform of her own: a tan T-shirt bearing the image of her nephew and the words “Justice for Frank Herrera.”

Jackson, who briefly signed as a free agent with the NFL’s New York Giants in 2012, has been jailed since September in the death of Herrera, his mother’s longtime boyfriend. Prosecutors say he strangled the 43-year-old Herrera on Sept. 11 and left his body to decompose in the back of a car for three days. Jackson entered a plea of not guilty Friday.

Jackson’s lawyers would not comment on the case.

During court testimony at a preliminary hearing in April, Jackson’s mother said her son appeared to be suffering from mental issues in the weeks leading up to Herrera’s death.

His arrest on Sept. 16 came after years of a roller coaster career and personal struggles.

Jackson graduated from Barbe High in Lake Charles, La., in 2009. His father, Lance Guidry, is a well-known football coach in the state.

Jackson got off to a promising start in college. But he also made national news during his freshman year when he and two teammates were arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery. The charges were eventually dropped.

Jackson was dismissed from the Tennessee team in 2011 and finished his college career at McNeese State, where his father is an assistant coach. He was a post-draft pickup by the Giants in April 2012 but was released four months later.

He moved to the Canadian Football League, signed with the Toronto Argonauts in February 2013, played five games and was released Aug. 18 for “football reasons,” a team spokesman said.

Jackson came to California and spent several weeks bouncing between his great-uncle’s house in Los Angeles and the apartment his mother and Herrera shared in Santa Monica.

Jackson had been talking to himself and acting strangely, his mother testified, leading her to call county mental health workers in August to evaluate him.

On Sept. 11, Herrera was supposed to drive Jackson to his great-uncle’s house in the afternoon, Tesra Jackson testified. She saw Herrera in the morning before she left for the day. She said she never saw him alive again.

Tesra Jackson said she tried unsuccessfully to reach Herrera that night but discovered his phone was turned off. Then, on Sept. 14, she went over to her uncle’s house and saw Herrera’s car parked nearby, she testified.

Inside the car she could see flies and noticed a distinct smell. Police discovered Herrera’s body underneath a blanket, the cord from a lamp wrapped around his neck.

Investigators say video surveillance from Jackson and Herrera’s building shows a man exit an elevator on the afternoon of the Sept. 11 dragging a large bundle.

Janzen Jackson told police he was the person in the footage, but that the bag was part of a workout routine, Los Angeles police Detective David Torres testified at the preliminary hearing earlier this spring.

Herrera’s family comes to every one of Jackson’s court dates.

“He was the nicest guy on earth,” Hector Herrera said of his deceased brother. “How did this happen to someone like that?”

Sad to read this. Jackson had so much potential but was obviously fighting demons he apparently could not overcome.

SEC arrests, LSU and second chances at Bama

SEC arrests, LSU and second chances at Bama

Get the bail bondsman on speed dial because it’s time for college football’s arrest season

"Mills’ arrest is the fourth time in the last four years that an LSU football player has been arrested for battery (Jordan Jefferson and Josh Johns in 2011, Jeremy Hill in 2013)...

Throw in the latest incident with Mills and the fact that LSU coach Les Miles indefinitely suspended and reinstated those previously charged athletes and you’re sure the Tigers’ program is spinning out of control.

But when you look at the big picture thanks to arrestnation.com, which tracks pro and college athletes’ and coaches’ arrests since Aug. 2010, LSU has had the least amount of football players arrested of all SEC schools except Vanderbilt.

Since that date, LSU has had seven players (counting the latest addition of Mills) arrested eight times. The SEC leader is Georgia, which has 19 players arrested 19 times. Texas A&M and Missouri have had 17 players each arrested (Mizzou head coach Gary Pinkel was also arrested for a DUI), and Tennessee has had 16 players arrested, including 10 at an out-of-control house party this past February.

Since May 1, 2013, the SEC has had 72 football players arrested, which is as many as the next four ranked conferences combined."

DJ Pettway and Ty Flourney-Smith (Ala class of 2014)
Saban addresses D.J. Pettway’s ‘horrible decision,’ return

Former Georgia TE Flournoy-Smith headed to Alabama

"Flournoy-Smith was dismissed from UGA after a string of off-field incidents, including an arrest for calling in a false crime (reporting textbooks he sold as stolen) and a violation of the school's marijuana-use policy.

Georgia Military coach Bert Williams confirmed Flournoy-Smith's commitment to the AJC, and spoke highly of the tight end's brief time on campus. (Ga Military was the JUCO Flourney-Smith transferred to after Georgia)

'We haven't had any problems with Ty,' Williams said. 'He has done fine in the Cadet Corps. He has worked hard on the field, and he has done well in the classroom. He came in with a good attitude, and he was really helpful with some of our freshmen guys. He has shown good leadership in helping them get past the freshmen challenges they all deal with. We've been very pleased with him. He's a good young man and will do well.'"

I don't see how DJ Pettway is worth the baggage he will be lugging back to TTown with him. Seems too risky for a guy with talent that's already a dime a dozen on that roster.

Drake just keeps stepping in it. Nothing really major, but the little things he does is disappointing. Oh well, guess his late season demotion last year hasn't got his attention yet. Maybe seeing Bo get a few snaps will open his eyes.

Yeah I don't get it with Drake? Great ball player that can't get out of his own way. too bad Bama doesn't have any depth there

Yep. Maybe starting out on the scout team again in the fall will get him going in the right direction. Kid is a great student, has great talent, but doesn't appear to have great judgment at times. His success is up to him at this point. He needs to figure things out... or get left out.

Haha, he picked the wrong position to be such a dumbass. Bama can kick two 5 stars off (Kamara and Drake) and STILL be absolutely loaded at that spot. Ridiculous.

I think this is more about what Bama can do for Pettway than what he can do for Bama. By all accounts, he's a quiet, easy-going, good kid who was just hanging out with the wrong guys. From what I hear, this is more about Saban trying to get Pettway's life on track than any need we have for another decent DL.
