Just based on potential I'd take our second string against most teams. You saw it today. So much talented depth at so many positions. That's the future and it looks good.

I hate to be the debbie downer here, but pump the brakes. OregonSt was decimated by the portal. No head coach as well.

We put up 40 regardless. We held them to a garbage TD regardless.

ND was pretty decimated too. I think the general point is the ND backups not only look talented, but well prepared. That is not something we have seen through the past 20 years. We have generally had teams with high end starters, but the young guys took years to develop and did not seem prepared for the moment when they got opportunities early in their careers.

Obviously there were some exceptions, but overall speaking our guys seem to be being developed and ready to contribute when their numbers called. This is true for both sides of the ball. If we can develop the WR room the team can be really good next year. MF IMO is growing and learning quickly and now has a very talented and complete staff around him.

Well, ND wasn’t even a touchdown favorite. I definitely didn’t think I would see the offense stepping up like that.

The depth now is at the level of any contender. It's on Leonard, the other transfers, Botehlo, Sneed, and whoever the starting tackles are to really step up and be elite. This depth + elite performances at the most important positions and we can win playoff games, plural.

Sure do. I knew I shouldn't have eaten that beef burrito submerged in queso and washed down with those margaritas ...

In all seriousness, I've been hard on Freeman. I don't view Notre Dame as a "learn on the job" program, and I believe he's made some poor play calls at times, he's had clock management issues, and/or he's simply failed to have his team ready to play at times.

That said, you can't ignore the general upward trajectory he's got the program heading since taking the helm. He's learning from his mistakes and the program is looking better and better, day by day. Notre Dame really should be a playoff team next year, and you all should be very optimistic about that.

This is probably the most bullish I've felt about ND since... 2013 or 2006. There was a lot of optimism for 2011 too.

There are still some big variables to be decided but it's tough not to think this program can't be a legitimate contender next year. Seems like they will have an elite defense with an elite DC. Also seems like they will have a quality OL, fantastic RB corp, vastly improved WR corp, and one of the most sought after QBs from free agency. Oh and a highly regarded OC.

It's going to be a long nine months. I'm brewing up the koolaid.

The number one thing I wanted answered for next year was if Jagusah looked the part even just a little bit at LT and he responded wonderfully.

I have some concerns over Freeman’s gameday coaching for the upper mid-tier opponents still, but I think he got the guy he needed in Denbrock at OC which will help offset those woes. Denbrock and Golden give him legitimately the best OC/DC duo in the country.

This roster really doesn’t have many holes anymore which is saying something for the portal era. 2nd safety? TE depth prior to Evans returning? Who replaces Bertrand? Not to minimize any of these problems, but it always felt in years past there were way more roster questions that were of greater consequence.

I am optimistic, but hard for me to be totally there with @A&M looming game 1. Taking care of business there solidifies this team as a contender

To make you feel a little better, it's actually Eight months (8/31/24) but yeah, a long time to wait!

I wish I felt better about the QB situation for 2024. Just not sold on Leonard.
You will be pleasantly surprised. I felt similar when the rumors started than started to do some homework on him. Before the season, a Day 2 product with conversation of a potential jump to Day 1 if he had a good year. As we know, he didn’t for a number of reasons. The tools are still there. Toss him in with an upgraded offense, better coaching and we’re sitting on a potential Day 1 QB.

He’s not perfect. Things have to break ND’s way. But on paper, could be special.

The offense yesterday was way, way more dynamic than what we had seen for most of the year. Very different from Parker's offense and it made the last 2 games of the season stand out more, as well (when Gino became more involved in the planning and design).

Tons of pre-snap motion - they even had 4 guys moving at the same time a couple of times. We never saw that even once during the regular season, even with the increased movement in games 11 and 12. They used play-action, designed QB roll-outs, read options where Angeli could use his wheels, it was much more creative than the regular season offense. It looked like what an offense is supposed to look like, even if the guys running it weren't as experienced. Take that offense, run it in games 1-12 in the regular season with Alt, Estime, Hartman, Faison being properly employed, etc, and this season is very different.

Just how the offense looked in general, irrespective of the success against a lifeless OSU squad, is very encouraging for 2024. I have a lot of concern with the youth of the OL, but get a transfer T and that concern shrinks a good bit - doesn't have to be a world-beater T, either. Just a solid veteran.
