If I had to chose between letting Mickens take the DC spot vs him not getting it and leaving id take a chance on him being the DC
This is just crazy talk to me. He obviously isn’t ready. Just because he’s been a really good CB coach for a while doesn’t mean he’s a good DC. Mike Elston was passed up and three years later still is a position coach.

We all just found this fact out though. Everyone thought the next DC would be a Mickens. It takes a bit to process that for eg he couldn’t even be the DC with a defensive head coach and now it’s probable he departs when we’ve just gotten use to great DB play.

I’m positive Freeman wouldn’t let Mickens leave for a lateral move they would make him the top paying coach and bump his title
Like... Assistant to the Associate Head Coach? How many titles could MF come up with the bump titles every time they might leave?

I think Freeman has done enough to earn everyone's trust in who he promotes/hires/retains. He's done a helluva job and his coaches are often moving up in the world when they leave. If he didn't feel confident in giving it to Mickens, I trust he has a plan to further his development in the program and contingency plans for when he/coaches decide to take another opportunity.

This hand-wringing bullshit is tiring. I love Mickens and I think his talent evaluation/development is nearly unparalleled in the secondary but again, I default to Freeman.

You guys need to knock off all the... he's gonna leave business. We have ZERO idea what he's thinking, what his career aspirations are. The one thing you can know for certain, Free's his boy. He's not just his boss. He's gonna look out for him so his star continues to rise.

Freeman didn’t believe in Mickens. Time to turn the page. What’s Dewayne Walker up to??

Looking at the ND website, the only coaching changes have been departures. Chris Ash has not been added, and there has been no change to Mickens' title. I think you are spot on here.
Well Ash hasnt attended a Hockey game as part of his initiation so...

Some just found out. Some thought Mickens would be the next DC. Not everyone.

The Ash hire seems to be setting Mickens up for the next DC. Too valuable to lose and if Ash and MF develop his play calling opportunities, he will be next IMO.

Maybe everyone should stop posting in this thread until there is some actual news to report. Everyone understands how important Mickens is to the program and the hiring of Ash creates some perceived tension. But we don’t know if there is tension. We don’t know if he’s going to be co-DC, we don’t know if he’s taking offers from other programs. We don’t know anything damn thing.

I can’t be the only one getting annoyed that this thread keeps popping to the top because you guys are mapping out solutions to problems that don’t exist. We’ll know soon enough. Relax.

"Mapping out solutions to problems that don't exist"

Spot on.

I can't comprehend how people are scheming to keep assistant coaches employed with this program for life. It's a strange mindset when you consider how the profession actually works.

Mickens has already been here, what, five seasons? He's our longest-tenured coach! He's not going to stay forever. And as you say, that's totally fine and normal and not some indictment of our football program. I note that, should he go to Texas, he would be going to work with old friend Terry Joseph, who was also an essential part of our staff until he wasn't, and life went on just fine.

That said, losing Mickens right now to a lateral move would be unfortunate. I think that's fair too.
