I'm not being sarcastic or shitty here... this is an honest question.

Why would Knowles leave for anything other than a HC job or the NFL?

Why would he come to ND? Does he hate Day? (I could see that) But he just won a Natty. I don't understand why he would consider (and I'm sorry for calling us this) a lateral job, and I certainly don't understand PSU or Tennessee.

Am I missing something? We could pay him a boatload, but couldn't he get that at OSU?
Maybe he is just bored or maybe he knows OSU will not have as much talent next year.

He has a fiance who doesn't want to leave Oklahoma and he wants to not be on the same staff as Larry Johnson at OSU. Talked about in the Golden thread.

Markus should interview him just to explain to him how to be the man in the relationship.
Wasn't Mrs Freeman one of the biggest advocates for Marcus to choose ND over LSU while a DC? I may be mixing up searches, but vaguely recall her hating BR.

I love crack as much as the next guy but Knowles isn't coming here for a lateral move after he just won it all at tOSU. Unless there is a competitive advantage we have, which I can't see. We won't pay exorbitantly more, I mean tOSU just paid $20+ million for their roster. We don't recruit as many 5-star players. His fiance doesn't live in SB. He doesn't have pre-existing relationships with people on the staff, right?

I think it's highly likely Mickens gets the job and Freeman is calling or helping with the defense in some capacity

Human beings are fucking weird. We are looking at it from our POV sitting here typing on computers and discussing it with total strangers. It makes no sense from where we sit that he'd leave Columbus. In reality, maybe having been there these last few years has been a major pain in the ass for him.

What's on stage and what's behind the curtain can be two completely different situations.

I don't think Knowles is coming here, but stranger things have happened, but I could see him leaving OSU if he doesn't like the people he works with and he has an emotional, romantic reason to want to leave. Unfortunately, that emotional, romantic reason doesn't reside in northern Indiana, but in Oklahoma.

We're living in a totally new era of the sport. I try to rationalize things but it's ultimately not the same climate it was five years ago. You're going to see movement where you never thought you would, and you're going to see guys stay at jobs that you can't make sense of either.

We'll know soon enough. I'd put my money on Knowles NOT coming to ND, but I like that they are at least reaching out to him. That's something we would not have seen five years ago either.

Not that I think ND gets Knowles, but you could have said the exact same thing about Denbrock last offseason.

Some guys just don't like the environment you get coaching at a football factory. It was true for Denbrock, and it looks like it may be true for Knowles.

Knowles was HC at Cornell and ND is much more similar to Cornell in terms of size/vibe than these other schools. But PSU and OU are similar to OSU. It sounds like the only reason he would leave is his fiance.

Living in State College and Norman is not the same as Columbus. OSU and its fans are a completely different animal.

Disagree. Denbrock has a relationship with Freeman and most guys on the offensive side. His main reason was getting back "home." His family is close to SB.

I see the point you're trying to make but denbrock isn't a good example.

Your post...makes my point?

Denbrock is an example of a guy who was at a factory but wanted something different, despite the "advantages" the poster I responded to pointed out (money, access to five stars, etc.) that Knowles has at OSU. He wanted a different kind of life and South Bend did the trick -- i.e., a guy walking away from a factory despite its advantages because of the environment ND affords.

And any "relationship" with Freeman doesn't come close to Denbrock's relationship with Kelly. He was in BKs wedding, for goodness sake.

Tyler James put this out:

A source Wednesday confirmed with Inside ND Sports the imminent hiring of the 51-year-old Ash, a college safety himself in his college playing days at Drake with extensive experience coaching DBs. Same confirmation for the 37-year-old Mickens, who will be heading into his sixth season with the Irish likely with a title and salary bump after joining. Mickens was originally hired on Brian Kelly’s staff as a cornerbacks coach in 2020.
