It just feels like they're overthinking it.

Give it to 4 or 24 and trust that your OL can get the yard. Simple.

I'm fine with that. What irritates the hell out of me is that the first time that doesn't work, you got tons of people on here who are suddenly inflicted with amnesia. The first time it doesn't work they are screaming "why do we continue to try to run the ball, they know we are going to run the ball, fire Denbrock"

Same page as y’all. Hopefully Marcus is just falling on the sword/not revealing the change going into USC.

Shortest distance between two points is a straight line. There’s a reason why QB sneaks are like 90% successful on 4th and short. It will be hard to convince me that operating shotgun or going laterally across the field is a better option for us.

To put a number on it, ND is 134th in Power Success Rate at 53.85%

Last year they were 63rd at 74.29%

It really isn't that hard I'd bring in an extra TE, bring in Will Black he might be injured now and push the pile I honestly like Price better in short yardage, I bet Love has been stopped for no gain or a loss more than Price this year

I'd do the opposite and spread them out four wide. If they still stack the box, it's an easy pitch and catch to the slot. If they cover, let Love pop it up the middle.

I drew up a couple single wing plays that were unstoppable when I coached youth football.

If I can find a fax machine I’ll send em in!

The main thing that would concern me about this upcoming game is having a new center in there replacing my most consistent OLineman so far. I hope that Otting can truly replace Craig. Fingers crossed. This isn't obvious. (Frankly gentlemen, if our OLine was a typical OLine with two or three guys capable of IMMEDIATELY stepping into an NFL roster, NOTHING about our offense would be suspect at this stage of the season. Rudolph has to hold us together by duct tape and willpower.) ... whistling past a dark place and looking for Jagusah, Coogan, Spindler, Craig, Pendleton, ....... asking a lot.

Hey, Hainsey! Stanley! Nelson! McGlinchey! Banks! got any eligibility left? Zack! Get a shave and dye your hair. One Game!

The 1:03 mark in this video. Pretty sure Rees used this a few weeks later and it worked perfectly there as well.

I am willing to bet Denbrock has saved some stuff for this game alone.

Maybe, but I hope we don't need it. I thought USC defense was still considered mediocre at best? Hopefully we just destroy them and make a big statement against a ranked USC.

Got rid of the wildcat. Cool.

3rd and short, 4th and short....I'm not sure what is going on anymore. They get a bye week to try and figure it out. Easy to say just run it but he's tried that too and for whatever reason Love and Price are not efficient in those moments.

Don't outsmart yourself. That's all you can really ask.

I see a bunch of things

1. QB sneak or TE sneak with push from behind under center needs to be part of the package. It's too simple and you're not going to lose yards like we do occasionally in short yardage.

2. He's running jumbo package plays with WRs instead of TEs or additional OL having to seal the edge. that's not working, and other teams have safeties/lbs free, pinching off the ends. Our RBs are forced to make someone miss to get a yard, that's not a good recipe. We've known about the poor TE depth situation for awhile, why not bring in 1-2 additional OL on short yardage and power run it? Seems like a huge miss in fall camp.

3. Wagner is really struggling to get any movement and tends to get blown up. Knapp isn't great, but he's far better than wagner this year.

4. Carr isn't a short yardage package runner, he can move but it's not a strength. I hate this, but they probably need to look at minchey short yardage packages.

5. when we call a pass play in short yardage, it can't be all or nothing on one read where there is no second or 3rd option if the first one is covered. That's happened 2-3 times now the last few games. They cover the out (we've ran a million times), and we have no other option. The out isn't difficult to defend if you expect it like every team does vs ND.

6. I'd like to see us spread teams out some in short yardage. get the numbers out of the box, show we're willing to take a shot occasionally so that teams need to pull a safety out as well. This isn't relevant at the goal line as much, but we can still spread the numbers out more.

7. They have a bye week to self-scout and modify the plan moving forward. This needs to be a priority.

Third and 2 from the 2, be better. Don't even put CJ in a bad spot. I'm still bitter about that sequence.

Same. I think that's the most unhinged I've become re: a Notre Dame play call in years. Probably haven't gotten that crazy since the Buchner INT in the Gator Bowl against South Carolina.

My poor neighbors 😆

As bad as the play call and execution was on the Int, to me, the playcall scheme was worse on the 2 runs for nothing to love the 2 plays beore setting up the 3rd down.

The first run they have 6 in the box on the LOS, we have 6 (eli) on the LOS. We block the 4 interior DL and let the two outsides crash the play and meet at love. You can do that if it's a QB keeper, but not a slow handoff like we did. Again, it's a play design for a QB keep we lead RB on one of the ends.

2nd run, now we go jumbo package and bring flanagan in. We have 12 personnel all on the LOS. Fields gets blown up, other wr blocks no one. OL doesn't get much push. It's just a really bad blocking scheme against an 11 man box. The play is designed to go one place, and it's not hard for the D to read that and crash to the pulling TE. the 2 USC lbs sold out on the run and did make good plays diving in.

He went back to ole reliable at the end and just ran CJ down by the goal-line. In the heat of the moment I was glad to see it, but it isn't logical to think that's the long term fix. I still think we're going to have to concede that inside the 5 he needs to be subbed out and that either Buchner or Minchey is your short yardage/GL QB on at least first/second down

No I'm sorry but that's why it works. You have to have the threat of CJ passing for the same reason why the stupid wildcat doesn't work. If Carr is not lined up at QB, EVERYONE knows you're going to run the ball. If Carr is lined up at QB, defenses have to at least have it in the back of their minds that he's going to throw it.

Just hand it to your RBs that went for 454 combined total yardage and call it a friggin' day. Stop galaxy braining this shit, it really does not have to be this difficult

For the record, this too is getting stopped, A LOT, in 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 situations.

I continue to hate how we pack the box offensively (all 11 guys within 5 yards of the ball). Spread them out and then run the ball. Even on 3rd and 1 from the 3 yard line.

I posted about it earlier in this thread, but there's been a combination of line calls and execution issues on these short yardage runs. For whatever reason, they're executing zone schemes better than gaps. And that has to make Rudolph and everyone else's heads spin because I know it makes mine spin.

The OL needs to line up and be better than the guys lined up across from them. Point, blank, period. It's part of the identity and culture of this program. If we can't line up and get a yard with these two RBs, we have no business being in the national title conversation

Yup. Everyone expects Carr to throw it if he's taking the snap and the RBs are blocking. There's a reason Tommy Rees has the only TD in the 2012 Michigan game.

If we have to do the wildcat, do a 2 back set and have one of them take the snap. You can do a read option. Then there’s at least something for the defense to think about.
