I wonder if he was holding that was one of the USC towels that were taken. Looks like the USC player went to grab it.

A few thoughts:

* The list of modern P4 coaches to be fired in two years or less without serious character/behavior concerns is extremely short. I can think of Chad Morris at Arkansas and Ryan Walters at Purdue, and those schools weren't dealing with anything remotely close to MSU's financial complications. Between settlements and legal fees, MSU could wind up paying Tucker/Smith more than $150 million, and we're only seven years removed from a $500 million settlement related to Larry Nassar. Probably about 5% of the people calling for Smith's head have some connection to MSU, and they mostly represent the caveman portion of the fanbase.

* The report above is about alleged interest by "a lot" of former players in Max as "a coach." This doesn't mean everybody wants him heading the program.

* As a Spartan, I wouldn't be opposed to hiring a position coach to head the program if he was suited to the position in other ways. Max could be that guy, but I have little data on him. Personality/interviews/people skills count for a hell of a lot to me, and I've seen Max talk for maybe ten minutes. Positive impression, though. Now we just gotta work on his taste for flat-bill headwear.

MSU 247 site doesn’t list him as a potential DC and said they can’t risk a first time playcaller when asked.

Can’t say I paid close enough attention to Northwestern to remember but I assume Fitzgerald is a defensive-minded coach? Would mitigate some of the risk here. Not that I want Bullough to go.

Mike Hankwitz was the DC at Northwestern from 2008-2020. He's generally credited as being the defensive mastermind and scheme guru under Fitzgerald. Fitz went 4-20 after Hankwitz retired.

Deleting comment from carousel thread. Looks like the Bullough conversation already started over here.

If he does leave, maybe go after Pitt's LB coach Ryan Manalac. They've had some good linebackers recently. Also, he has a connection to the staff. He was teammates with Mickens at Cincy.

Some real MSU smoke here, LB coach and Co-DC
While I understand where this is coming from, Rossi was just retained as DC and coaches linebackers.

Anytime rumors are about alumni, you gotta guess that it may be fan driven.

Having said that, I know nothing... so he could be hired tomorrow.

On multiple boards that they're in talks. Also, Rossi would move to coaching the safeties.

If Bullough leaves I'd be surprised if Freeman doesn't reach out James Laurinaitis
Would he leave the Buckturds?

Two names immediately jump to my mind: Ryan Manalac from Pitt and Roc Bellantoni from Auburn. I like Seth Wallace too but he's another one of these guys who has been at Iowa forever so you have to wonder if he'd legitimately leave.

I wonder if this would be a position that gets the coaching assignments split a bit in the future. Like a OLB/EDGE combo and ILB - seeing as how we only base 2 LB and do use players listed as LB in an edge role in situations. Gives you 3 full assistants for the front 6 or 7 (sorry)
