i would guess ND conducted an internal review in the wake of the Northwestern scandal and found some things they didnt like
The biggest reason I think this might not be true is that Freeman is quoted as saying that he respects Balis "as a coach and a man". If it's really something like the NW scandal, then you don't make any comment.

But here's another big loss to the "continuity" that was packaged with the Freeman hire. No more Rees, no more Balis.

i just saw the freeman quote so yeah it sounds like its more like a genuine personal reason. Without that, you'd definitely be thinking something greater with the current going's on at NW

100% was what I was thinking at first, but I'm with you, likely a genuine reason

99% of a S&C coach’s work is the off-season. They are more involved with the players then than the HC is.
So, in reality, this would be the best timing. The off-season ends today.
I wonder if he timed his decision that way.

This is my thinking as well

Yeesh. Bad news.
Hopefully it is in fact for personal reasons and hopefully those reasons resolve in a good way for him.

The timing of this could not be any worse.
Eh, in terms of time of year, its probably good. The heavy parts of the offseason program are done and the players are getting back to working with the coaches now.

Unless you mean in relation to the Northwestern stuff. Then yeah, this looks bad.

Good points. But won't active rest/recovery/injury management play a huge part in fall camp, and wasn't Balis the guy overseeing that? Or is that moreso the training staff?

Also Balis has been in most of the workout videos they have released lately, hasnt he? (He gave personal approval to Ausberry’s squat technique.)

If there was an investigation underway into any sort of wrongdoing, they would probably have kept him out of public view, if not out of the locker room entirely. Unless it’s something that caught them totally off guard.

Okay this explains it. He was so embarrassed at being wrong about Ausberry's squat form that he had to resign.

There is an Associate Director, Fred Hale, who was Balis’ second in command.
He will oversee that for this season & carry out Balis’ plan.
Next season is when the new person will be important.

He’s been with the program for at least a few years. You see him on the sidelines all the time when you watch the game on tv.
Oh that guy! Yes. He is everywhere.

Yeah reading the release this sounds like a planned thing, and actually personal reasons. They explicitly thanked him for seeing out the off-season.

Prister and O’Malley have both stated it’s a personal issue for Balis with nothing bad or off about it
Yeah they seem more sure of that with each post. Hopefully it is just burnout or something medically mild.

I always wondered who that guy was. He seemed really engaged with players.
he actually does videos on twitter showing people/football players how to do lifts properly without injuring themselves or using bad tech

Driskell says it wasn’t a surprise to ND coaches, it isn’t for behavior or anything, but spoke to multiple parents of players and none of the players knew.

I think the timing lends to the idea that it's personal & he likely wanted to finish summer workouts & go deal with what he has to deal with.. I hope he's healthy & it's nothing like that.

ND should have really said this in their statement, that it wasn't related to any malpractice or investigation

If they go externally, poach Ben Herbert from Michigan. Him and Rudolph have quite a bit of overlap in their careers.
