I posted this in the Kelly thread, but it might be better suited here.
Kelly is a GREAT coach that got very lazy here. He found out quickly just how hard he had to work to keep the very top kids in the fold (even after they got on campus) and decided his golf game was more important.
I'm thankful he came here and rebuilt the program. I got very comfortable with the security blanket of Kelly's 9-11 wins every year even though we got beat down every time we faced one of the big 3. Truth be told, I probably would've been fine with him staying.
But watching that team last night. Just completely dismantle a top 4 undefeated Dabo team LOADED with Sunday talent has me thinking bigger. Marcus has found a way to get this team up for the big boys. If he had anything at the QB position he beats OSU in the Shoe and we're ranked number 1 with two top 4 wins this year.
It took half a year for Tommy and Harry to get the line rolling like the 90's Cowboys, but it's happening. With the talent in the pipeline and the experience coming back, I expect they hit the ground running next year and continue to roll for the foreseeable future. Last night proved something: Marcus CAN coach at this level. His program and philosophies are working and once he infuses this program with the talent he's shooting for... watch out!
Kelly is a GREAT coach, but he wasn't GREAT here. He was lazy.
I have no doubt that our record would be almost exactly like it is now, but with losses to Clemson and OSU not Marshall and Stanford.
I'll take the high highs and the lowest lows now because it's going to lead to the ultimate highs in the future.
