Lincoln Riley had Baker Mayfield AND Kyler Murray. Baker went for 43 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.

Both sides are finding comparisons to fit their narrative. The fact is this a unique situation and not really easily comparable. One thing we know is our offense sucks, the HC lacks answers and we likely will begin bleeding recruits. We kept MF for continuity and saving a class. But that may turn out to very shortsighted and cost us to be in a 5 year spiral.

Everyone knew that ND wasn't a top 5 team. It was pretty clear that this was a down year for the program. Maybe not to this extent, but still we all knew it was coming.

All you want to do is talk QB's. Freeman had every opportunity to bring in any qb transfer but he took the word of his oc that they could win a title with their own QB's. That's on HIM.

I agree it's a unique situation, and I think on your point about continuity, we were blinded to some degree by back to back top 10 classes and the winning of the last 5 years, because we hadn't had that much success in a long time.

For the sake of not beating a dead horse anymore, I will find some common ground with you that he is at fault for taking the word of his OC and not taking a QB. But they didn't, so they're stuck with what they got. Sure, that is on him ultimately.

Yeah, maybe that is true. But when you go the lazy path or the easy one this type of stuff will happen more often than not. MF may turn it around, not liking what I hear or see so far. In Holtz first year we lost a bunch, but the feel was different. Right now, I expect to lose because most of our staff lacks experience and knowledge how to shift when something is not working.

ND is in a horrible spot. Our awesome class is teetering, our awesome, energetic coach has should little leadership, and our OC is really above reproach. I feel like I did during the Willingham Era, and that sucks.

I must of missed when you were comparing OSU to ND during the BK era. I’m sure that level of positivity always came out.

What do you realistically need to see in year 2 for that to change your perception? 9-3/10-2? I think the point of the comparisons to the other coaches was that year 1 doesn't necessarily mean anything. I have no clue if Freeman is going to be a Kirby Smart or a Will Muschamp type of hire. I am sure UGA fans thought in 2016 that they got a bust of a head coach. I am sure there were Florida fans like me in 2011 that thought he needed more time. Even though I started this thread kinda as a joke because of the Kelly revisited thread, I think it's a bit unfair to say this was a mistake after 6 games.

The only thing I'm evaluating Freeman on this year is the lack of attention to detail that the team plays with and other big picture leadership things. Way more "mistakes" than past Kelly teams, which is why Kelly won so many in a row against unranked teams and so many close games but often got blown the heck out by "elite" teams.

I put the offense issues on him 0% and so I'm not really focused on ND's record. Next year, he will be accountable for the offense too because he has an offseason to make changes. We all know he had no control over his OC in the "transition" to this year.

But this is literally the purpose of the head coach. It isnt a good sign.

I need to see improvement and consistency. We lost to Stanford and Marshall. We are a bad team, need to see that we have hope. I do not see that, do you? Do you see a light at the end of the tunnel? I see no QB, an OC who refuses to learn and be less predictable. And I see a coach that looks bewildered, totally lost. Every camera shot he looks like he needs a hug.

I am with you, but I think remedying the bolded makes us have less qualms about the OC (of which, the OC is still responsible for the bolded), and he probably looks a lot less bewildered. Not taking JT Daniels, Kedon Slovis, or almost anyone is proving to be the worst offense since his hiring.

Run everything back next year with a transfer QB and then make a decision. While player development is absolutely a fair criticism, Pyne is too bad to even properly judge Rees as a playcaller IMO. Also, Rees did a hell of a job developing Book FWIW. Can't say he didn't Maximize his talent.
