Of all the things, this shakes my confidence in Freeman more than anything. More than Stanford, more than Marshall. Not close.

His response in the press conference was so disturbing. He said he was aware they only had 10, but didn’t want to rush a player on and get a penalty. What would it be, 1/2 a yard Marcus…?

Also, didn’t ND call timeout before one of the two “10 man” plays (emphasis added) too? How on Earth does that happen? I just don’t see how you can ever overlook this.

I said it last night, and I’ll say it again, ND had no business losing that game. The coaching staff lost that game, and it starts at the top.

Hopefully he apologized to the team. Huge week needed as a response. I'm sure the team believes in their coach, but he needs to add this to the situations that will never ever happen again or he could risk losing his guys.

Pete Sampson mentioned that last play, OSU changed RBs so ND had a chance to run someone out there without committing a penalty. I think they also counted 37 seconds between plays.

The eyes in the sky failed MF. How do they not tell him OSU changed RBs?

Let down by the entire staff.

Again Freeman is lying they didn’t know they only had 10 on the field.

Add that they didn’t realize it the play before after calling a timeout

Just so bad… ESPN is so bad they don’t realize it was 2 plays in a row, not just the final one

What’s worse: admitting you didn’t know or pretending you knew and not wanting to commit a penalty?

I think it’s clear they didn’t know. If they knew right away, they should’ve had Bohtello ready to go on the sideline and the moment it falls incomplete, run his ass out there.

Just take a couple of knees on your final drive to kill some clock and you win. (Shaking head) I really do hate it for the players and the fans. I really do. Both showed up. Coaching staff blew this one. MF blew this one, AG blew this one, GP blew this one.

I love Freeman and the energy he has brought to the field and university. The toughness he has instilled in this team is amazing. But he’s terrible game time management issues. To continue to go for it on 4th down, his answers in the press conference are becoming embarrassing. This is year two did you not learn anything last year?

Every loss we have had since he has been the coach comes down to bad coaching.

RB room and Javontae Jean Baptiste carried the team.

Feel bad for them the most.

I’ll admit I like the aggression on 4th down. I was disappointed in Hartman’s…”heart”…and not planting to turn up north and get that first down at all costs. He just…ran to the sideline. Didn’t extend the ball, dive for the first, nothing.

But look, their players. Mistakes will be made. Coaches truly lost this game.

We will never be elite without accountability. That was bad coaching. Who is responsible for only having 10 players on the field at the last 2 plays???

Washington should be terminated. Freeman has no balls.

Bad coaching? Is coaching why Hartman didn’t pick up either first, is coaching why we couldn’t haul in and missed 2 easy picks that last drive? I don’t care how good of a coach you are players need to make

Agree 100%… terrible fourth down calls but players could have still overcame the bad calls … same with last drive, terrible calls by golden but brown could have made a routine catch to seal game or on offense, Hartman could have put air on screen pass and we win

Loss is on coaches , but players could have bailed them out

Kelly didn’t compete with anyone he got his ass beat when it mattered. Kelly also didn’t have to recruit during the NIL era at ND.
He had us in CFP and National Title game. That won't happen with Freeman. He is soft, bro. Keep making excuses.

Yup. We did what we needed to. OSU’s defense was looking tired and we were running the ball well in the 4th. Why try to throw? Why risk a interception? Parker was money with the dual backs backfield. Why stop? Then the DJ Brown drop doesn’t have to happen, then the prevent defense on 3 and long doesn’t happen.

Dude, you had 10 men on the field. You didn’t have a DE. Ohio State ran it right where the missing player was. That is utterly inexcusable. And that was coming out after a timeout. That is Pop Warner level b.s.

On 3rd and 19, you only rush 3 players, and drop 7 or 8 (unfortunately, this is something that you have to look and verify…) into coverage. First down. You’ve been getting after his ass all day. Whythe f*** do you all of a sudden drop and play soft zone? Colorado State did the same thing against CU…changed its defensive philosophy to a bend and don’t break defense and Sanders marched CU 96+ yards down the field in 60 seconds or so to tie the game. Again, why change your philosophy?

On your last drive, instead of trying to bleed the clock, you get cute and waste barely any time. A couple of knees to kill the clock and you win.

I get you probably love MF and think he looks “fresh” in his ND gear, but that was a coaching failure.

ETA: and I agree that players have to make the plays. Shrader needs to make that kick. Hartman needs to get that first. Whoever the DB was needs to make that pick. However, you had many players out there, many players you likely didn’t expect too much (Mitchell Evans for example) play their asses off and made big, critical plays. The entire team isn’t always going to play flawlessly….the team and players showed up. The fans showed up. The coaches, however, didn’t.

Coach Kelly never made these mistakes. Wish we had him. Experience and toughness matter. Freeman is inexperienced and too nice to hold people accountable.

Woke up, stewed on it.....Freeman will never stop hearing about the 10 men.....his whole career. Whether we think it's overplayed or not, his fault or not, he is wearing that forever. Marshall and stanford already stink. He feels like a bit of a fan on the sidelines. Love the guy, a ton of what he's done, better grow and show some coaching acumen.

Respectfully, Kelly made these mistakes all the time. He blew a game against a crappy Northwestern team by going for 2 in a situation where it provided zero value. He had major clock management issues throughout his tenure. He blew Michigan UTL by not knowing how to call prevent defense. There is a lonnnnnng list.

It reminds me of Derek Dooley sending 13 men on the field

Kelly made poor decisions… freeman just has no clue to even make a decision…

Freeman’s poor decision was not running out the dl last second of last play…. But his incompetence and the staffs is that they didn’t even realize it during or after the play before, after a timeout, and after osu substituted

Last night was brutal. But it is way too early to judge Freeman. The talent discrepancy was real in this game but you wouldn’t know it by the way ND played. They were fearless and successfully played bully ball for almost the whole game.

But OSU has first round talent in several places. ND has Alt and maybe Morrison. Players make plays and ND doesn’t have enough of them.

DJ dropped an easy game ending pick.
Hartman didn’t stretch out for that first down.
Blitzes never got home.
Limited pass rush from the ends.

Freeman still has a high ceiling that we need to see if he can reach. If the recruiting doesn’t show dividends in 2 years then it’s a different discussion.

I love Freeman. I really do think he’s the coach the program needs and he will lead us to new heights.

But if you are getting paid $7M annually, you simply cannot make the mistakes that were made the last two plays. It’s inexcusable at any time let alone the biggest game at ND stadium in 5+ years.

Kelly had two lives at Notre Dame.
His first was littered with losses much worse than last night.

South Florida
Tulsa??????
Navy
UTL
Northwestern
Arizona St

That's just off the top of my head.
