I love Freeman. I really do think he’s the coach the program needs and he will lead us to new heights.

But if you are getting paid $7M annually, you simply cannot make the mistakes that were made the last two plays. It’s inexcusable at any time let alone the biggest game at ND stadium in 5+ years.

Amen brother

Kelly had two lives at Notre Dame.
His first was littered with losses much worse than last night.

South Florida
Tulsa??????
Navy
UTL
Northwestern
Arizona St

That's just off the top of my head.
Navy..........twice.

All you the ND fans calling for MFMF to be fired need to shut the duck up. If you honestly think there is a coach out there who would be a better fit for our program you are crazy. He is a new coach and he will make mistakes. Last night will not be his last mistake, he will make more. Last night sucked balls but when we woke up this morning there are still bald eagles flying all over the country, it's donut and apple cider season, and we live in the best damn country in the world

"To me it was like, 'Hey, don't give them another opportunity to get settled and to try to make a different call,' right?" said Freeman, who didn't have any timeouts remaining. "Hey, guys, stay off the field. Let's not give them a freebie from the half-yard line and let's try to stop them.”

JFC…that’s a “for cause” fireable offense. You’re coming out of a time out, on the goal line, and you’re a lineman short…and you know it and recognize it. I can’t fathom that level of
incompetence. Then, you double down on a horrendous decision! That dolt, Vince, from IB even recognized the penalty is what — 1/2 a yard! Take the penalty, genius!

No moral victories, but ND should have won that game last night. Again, I hate it for the players and all of the ND fans — they didn’t deserve that.

People tend to forget Kelly had 1 good year out of his first 5 and then year 7 was awful. He also cost us 10 games in those first 7 years on play calling. Kelly shoulda been fired alone for keeping BVG around for a second year. Kelly sucked as a recruiter

Like I said earlier: Kelly had two different ND lives.
Besides 2012, he was HORRIBLE his first SEVEN years.

Agree Kelly should have been gone after 16, but Kelly was taking over a broken program, freeman inherited a top 5 one

If he knew it and recognized it, they would’ve corrected it on the 2nd play.

So many levels of failure for this coaching staff. DL, DC, HC.
Yep. Whenever the press conference is (Monday, I presume?), I’d make the HC, DC, and DL coach explain this. They all, collectively, need to sit at the podium and be accountable. They need to be raked over the coals for this.

ETA: Savy Jack, too — fucking douchebag. Fuck I’m angry. More so than last night

He is and always has been soft. Starts at the top. ND needs a football czar.

He also got his ass kicked by Navy. Saw that shit snow in person
Right, from 2010 through 2016 he had one elite season and one good season and then a whole bunch of blown games / bad coaching.

From 2017 to 2021 he got mostly carried by his DCs and had pretty consistently good teams that didn’t blow games to inferior opponents.

ND did a lot of good to “outplay” Ohio State for virtually the entire game but yeah… the last three plays were a doozy.

Even 2012 was questionable to call elite. OK game was awesome but they had a ton of squeakers that I wouldn’t exactly call elite.

It is honestly such a stark moment of complete incompetence that it makes me feel better about my performance at my day job. I wonder if I’m doing good work but I’ve never done my version of that.

Respectfully, Kelly made these mistakes all the time. He blew a game against a crappy Northwestern team by going for 2 in a situation where it provided zero value. He had major clock management issues throughout his tenure. He blew Michigan UTL by not knowing how to call prevent defense. There is a lonnnnnng list.
Thank you. Some folks here seem to think Marcus Freeman cornered the market on poor head coaching decisions at Notre Dame in recent history. I actually think he's done quite well through his year and approximately 1/3 of a season so far as compared to where Brian Kelly started...

I think freeman has done better as a HC than dc… he’s just made a couple blunders… no portal qb last year, and whatever in game structure and recognition communication plan. Not having a fourth down and short plan, or opposition personnel communication structure

Yep, and the thing that I have noticed about Freeman thus far is that he's eager, able, and willing to learn from his mistakes. He's going to make mistakes, not only is he a new head coach but he wasn't a coordinator for very long before that. We all knew this when he was hired. These are the growing pains most of us were willing to accept for the potential that came along with it. I don't think we will ever see a blunder like that again under Marcus freeman. There may be other mistakes, but that will not happen again.

The next blunder that can’t happen is losing next week … in all honesty, we should be so locked in and play the best game of the year with physicality even Ryan day would acknowledge is above osu

Duke is a really well coached team with a good qb and average talent

It’s the 34-13 type of score we should see

That kind of outcome would be just what the doctor ordered.

"And I thought maybe they would do the same thing they did the snap before, and then they ended up running the ball," he added. "So I got to watch the play and see where the ball hit. But yeah, that's why that I made that decision."

Really…? The same play?
