I’d rather have Malik Zaire relieve Tommy than Hendrix after watching today’s game. Nothing against Hendrix but I’d like to see what this guy can do coz I have a feeling we’re going to need him soon. Tommy did good today but not sure how he’ll fare against better defenses. Thoughts?

First why start this thread?

Second Zaire is out with mono.

Third I would rather see Hendrix than a freshman.

Hendrix gives us the best chance to win. If you're concerned about Rees vs. better defenses, you should be scared shitless of seeing Zaire in there. We need him to redshirt.

We also need Hendrix to return for depth in 2014. If he gets passed by Zaire this year, he might not come back.

my only thing with Zaire is, I wish they could preserve his eligibility this year and not play him. I think it would be nice to not HAVE TO play a freshman at QB. I think Zaire has a bright future at ND, and not having to play a freshman at QB says something about the depth the program is developing. My thought is, with the assumption that Golson will return, Zaire could mentor under Golson, and not be 'thrown to the wolves' as a freshman. I would like to think that the program has grown to the point that playing a freshman at QB isn't something ND needs to do anymore.

Tommy played really well tonight but you are already thinking we will be in trouble against better defenses? I will be very surprised if that happens.

I meant playing Zaire when we have a big lead next time. Not sure how much better Hendrix will get.

Brian Kelly knows a little bit more about who is ready to play than we do. Do we need to second-guess every god damn thing?

Hendrix and its not close. No reason to play Malik unless Tommy gets hurt. I want to see what Malik has got too but not at the expense of burning a potential redshirt for no reason. And why would we need him soon? You think he would beat out Tommy against better defenses? No f'ing way.

The thing about the whole playing or not playing Malik debate comes down to one thing:

If for some reason Golson doesn't return to ND, Malik would not have seen any game reps if he redshirted. Meaning, Hendrix (who in that case, would ultimately be back for a 5th yr) would be the most experienced QB on roster and presumed starter. That's some bad kind of scary stuff right there.

But are garbage time game reps against inferior competition really that valuable? Are they worth burning his redshirt? The answer is a definitive NO, IMO.

2013 QB Eff Ratings:

Rees 229.02 (one of ND's better QB performance of All Time)

Hendrix 43.90 (with the scrubs)

Zaire 0.0 DNP (out ill.)

Zaire will NOTplay unless Rees or Hendrix has an injury/eligibility problem and a new #2 is required. I believe when he's healthy the plan is to have him take #3 QB reps and not work on the scout team. That's logical considering the current depth and Golson's plans. Everyone expects Golson back in '14 but until he's back in class getting Zaire prepped is prudent.

Personally I'd like to see Zaire get PT this year as it's possible that Golson might decide differently in a few months and Hendrix could forego a 5th year for med school (his career goal). IF Golson and Hendrix were both NOT in school in '14, Zaire would vault to #1 by default. Worse case scenario is ND have two QBs available in '14 with neither ever having taken a college game snap.

Be assured Kelly will monitor Golson's and Hendrix's '14 plans throughout the season and will adjust PT as necessary, IF the forecast changes.

First I agree with the majority that its better to preserve a year of eligibility and play Hendrix but he looked terrible. Every time he has the ball in his hands he looks nervous. Has no touch on his throws and clearly can't recognize where he's supposed to go with the ball

Hendrix reminds me of Crist every time he throws. No touch.

I think we can play Zaire this year if necessary to prepare for life with out EG and still have it work. I believe both Massa and Hendrix have eloyibilty left after this year, so if you need to get Zaire snaps this year as the QB of the future and prepare him for next year if EG doesn't comeback you do it. Then if you know for sure that EG will be back you plan on bringing either Hendrix or Massa back as your mop up duty QB and RS both MZ and DK next year.

Disclaimer: I'm a bottle of wine into my night so if this doesn't make sense, my bad.

Hendrix did play like garbage, but the play calls he received were very conservative and limiting. His first pass play was a bootleg, classically considered an easy read because only half the field has to be read with predetermined options.

BK has clearly stated that Hendrix can run the entire offense. Zaire cannot. So no, Zaire should not play this year.

IMO, where they are similar is the mental part of it. They just never got situational football or where they are supposed to be looking in certain situations. The fact that Hendrix saw man to man and went to fuller instead in Robinson was laughable. Thats exactly what Crist would have done and thats exactly why Crist would get pulled. Makes no sense.

Hendrix is like the kid in the movie 'rookie of the year' but without accuracy.

People didn't like what they saw from Tommy? He had a couple overthrows, but he took care of the ball, moved the offense (Before we turned off the gas, according to BK), and he made good decisions. I can tell you that Hendrix did not look good, at least from the stands.

Well, here It stands! Hendrix imo should stay with the green team, on the bench! If we can't see past 2 years we're in trouble regardless and Bk already has the likes of poster's on here + his $ guys.... Is It that hard to like the man after 3 1/2 yrs? Blows the mind... get a spine and stop watching Johnny! We are good! We are better than that... and you make us look bad expecting more!!

I was all for Hendrix over Tommy....however based on what I saw tonight I was dead wrong. So as far as Z, have to say stick with Hendrix....however, if he cannot throw at all teams will eat us alive- so guess i would roll the dice with Z.

Malik should definitely get snaps in our offense during practice this week. I was told that he hasn't ran our offense since spring, which makes sense, as somebody has to run the scout team.

He needs to be ready this week either way, as Hendrix could get hurt and we wouldn't have a choice.

It's ridiculous that we are at the point where we are hoping for Rees, might be forced into playing a QB that can't even play the position, and are an injury away from having to play a true freshman that hasn't ran our offense in 9 months.

I just can't get how Hendrix was a 4-star recruit and still can't hit the side of an aircraft hanger. After over 3 years, is the offense that complex? I wish him luck in the future (med school?), but I thought he would be better by now.
