Seriously, I'm shocked by how many top recruits say this. Seriously, grow a pair and leave the nest. I don't recall a single one of my friends picking a college because it was close to home. Some had to because the college close to home was much cheaper, but no one did it because they couldn't get away from their mother's teat.'

Seriously, wtf.

I know a lot of people that picked their college on distance from home. Even if it wasn't the deciding factor, it played a role in the majority of college decisions of people I grew up with.

Furthermore, I don't blame a kid. Family matters. That may be different for everyone, but it does matter. Depending on a kid's family situation it can matter a whole lot.

I do suspect we get more of this than most schools. A pitfall of recruiting nationally.
Also "too far from home" can be a way of explaining other issues, like not feeling like you fit in culturally to a place.

Some kids want to get out on their own for college, which means getting as far away from home as possible.

Other kids may want to be as close to their family as possible. In some instances, this may mean that they are scared to be on their own. However, I think there are plenty of cases where the kid simply loves his family and wants every possible opportunity to see them.

And I don't think either way is right or wrong.

If Hood really did decide that he wants to be closer to home in college, who are we to judge? Who are we to tell him to "man up, leave the nest" simply because he would like for his family to be able to attend every home game?

I agree with this. I'm trying really hard to think of someone I graduated with that went to a school more than a six-hour drive from home and I'm coming up empty. Most of the time, "regular" students can find what they're looking for closer to home. The school I went to was very diverse (students from all over the US and world), but I always viewed it as an exception.

I guess my circle of friends was unusual.

The only kids that stayed near home went to community college because they couldn't hack it or cost reasons.

Jaylon Smith wanted to stay in the Midwest. Does he need to grow a pair?

Waaaa! Grow up ... it's a matter of committing 4 yrs of your life to "get ahead" in the world. Can't leave "the nest" for 4 freakin' yrs.!? Momma ain't gonna be there the rest of your life to hold your hand! This is why I hate early commits .... dealing with a teenage mindset! Sorry for the rant, but had to!

Again, why are we assuming that every kid that stays close to home for college does so because they are scared to leave "the nest"?

I told my parents that I wouldn't go to school anywhere closer than Loyola Maryland (Baltimore) for College, which is 2 hours away. I have. Friend who wants to go to Pitt with his GF when he could probably get into a Ivy League school and she may have autism. Another one of my friends doesn't want to leave the Philadelphia area and is only considering Villanova, Penn, St. Joe's, Lasalle, and Drexel. He says that he wants to be close to home where he could wash his clothes and get free meals.

Idk. To me college is about meeting new people and getting away from home. I could see why some people want to stay close to be around old friends/ GF but I'm completely different.

Are you implying some kids don't have the chest to leave home?

Cry a river. Who truly needs to grow a pair, the kids who want to stay at or near home or the adults worrying and all ticked off at a teen for making that decision?

Sh!t happens.

Every kid is different, some just cant be far from their families. I couldn't wait to get far away and start making my own decisions, some kids just aren't ready. Some parents, however, are quite selfish and because they aren't ready to let their kids begin to live their own life and make their own decisions, guilt them into staying close to home.

Yep, every kid is def different. I went to college two hours away so I could get away from everyone I knew. Had a terrible time in high school and I didn't want it to follow me to college. Nor did I want a place where my parents could "pop in" for a surprise visit.

Every kid makes their own choices for their own reasons. Our opinion of them is irrelevant. The end.
