I originally posted this video in the Kelly and Recruiting thread but deem it worthy of it's own at this point. I normally don't like to highlight any potential negative things surrounding ND football but I'm almost sure this will be escalated from many other outlets and angles.. Trevor Robinson is already displaying his feelings on twitter.. as clashmore mike alluded to in the other thread.

I suggest you watch the whole video and pay attention to Kelly's response at 3:00.. I personally think it's being taken and will be represented in the media, the wrong way.

Either way, Kelly needs to clean out his filter and be careful with the borderline comments.

Below the video I'll copy TRob's twitter reaction.

Trevor Robinson let Rudy know about it too..

And here is Keith Arnold's take.. Which I agree with.

If any upperclassmen feels like their head coach slighted them on the radio today, they should look in the mirror. That was intentional.

He may lose some players this year, but I think it will work out better in the long term. He better hope this works or else it could be bad.

I was actually surprised he said it that bluntly. Several players expressed their feelings over twitter. TRob, Cave, KLM, Te'o etc. I don't blame them for being upset. Hopefully this works though.

What i found most funny was over at 4HL, several posters who only whine and complain about any and everything, started bashing all the players for having an opinion on all of this.

Teo later tweeted that he just got finished watching film at 1:30 AM.

I was too ha.. I hope it works for him. He doesn't exactly need to be their friend, he needs them to play focused, dominant football. Holtz didn't take sh!t from any players, in any way, at any time, for any reason. Calling out kids in the media is risky business but he's top dog so he's going to do what he deems necessary.

I agree. It's like being a parent. You can't be a dad and a buddy at the same time, but that he said it so bluntly to the media was surprising. I hope it works.

I don't know, his comments should have never been said for the public to hear. It is like your teacher telling the world that you are stupid and it is not her fault, even though it is the teachers job to teach them. Blaming players is never a good thing. Look what happened to that coach from Kansas.

I think the whole point was to send a message to the players through the media because he doesn't feel like they're getting it from him. I don't know if it will work or not, but its worth a shot. I don't feel bad for the upperclassmen. This team could be sitting at 7-0, but instead it is 4-3 because of a handful of stupid plays, almost all of which were committed by upperclassmen. Maybe it is unfair to lump them all together, but if you don't want to get the coach on your *** then you have to win.

Just not so sure blaming players in the media is the right thing to do. There are other ways of getting through to players. It is my interpretation that the team is like a family and that they are supposed to stick up for one another. You blame the whole team or you don't blame anyone at all. After all, it is a team sport.

He mentioned the word re-training too.

I know in my field, Air Traffic Control, it is almost always easier to train someone that is equipped with the basics but has no prior experience than someone with experience at a completely different facility, with different procedures, phraseology and overall mindset. You can mold the newbie rather than battle with the experienced guy that wants to do it his way..

I think with the freshman, he meant that he's able to get his hands on these guys and train them his way, from scratch... Rather than "re-training" Weis' guys that apparently are still wreaking of that staff and not living up to Kelly's day to day expectations..

The ball is in the players court now.

Call me crazy, but Kelly hit it right on the nose. It's no different than what Aaron Taylor said in the other thread! I graduated from this great university in 2010, and had to deal with several terrible seasons of football. The players, even with their pathetic efforts on the field at times, still walked around as if the world owed them something and that teams should just lay down to them. That clearly isn't the case today and some of our upperclassmen still hold that mentality...S*** has to change somehow and I'm perfectly fine with Kelly's play right here.

Had no issue with what he said and I probably wouldn't have thought twice after hearing it if it hadn't been made an issue.

Mo-ti-va-tion

in reference to Wildman's accurate analogy...

As a sous chef, I'd MUCH rather have an untrained newb with a good work ethic,

rather than some punk out of culinary academy

yeah you had 2 years learning a certain way...

But learn MY way

He's challenging his guys. Let's see who has some backbone. You need it in order to be successful with BK.

Same here! Damn, these are young ADULTS that's being addressed. If they think that they won't get "challenged to change" throughout the rest of their life after graduation, they're in for a rude awakening! Life is full of mindset changes, so get used to it!

It's real simple put or shut up. If players don't like what he said then play to the fullest every minute of the game. He was trying to make them angry so they will take it out on navy, and get the poision of a loss out of them.Kelly knows what to do and that is change the mind set of the players.Saban did the same thing and said the same thing after his team layed down his first year, and look what he did.I said ND would go undefeated this year and people thought I was crazy. Now people are realizing we shoud have. The fans need more optimism because he is changing this team for the better.

I was expecting much worse. Agree with BK 100% and he realizes there are some older guys on this team that he wouldn't consider his type of guy.

There is not one single thing that upset me about what BK said. The truth hurts at times and to be honest we should be undefeated right now. Some of our players have made critical mistakes at the most unfortunate times. Players need to dig down deep inside and play balls out while remaining focused and stopping the turnovers and things like unsportsmanlike penalties. How many times have we turned the ball over and the opposing team score? How many times have we given up large chunks of yardage for a stupid penalty? This team needs to play better plain and simple. These players need to take the criticism and learn from it and become better. Getting upset about being criticized does this team no good. I truly hope our team takes things to heart and plays smarter football. We have more games ahead and we need to finish up stronger than we are playing right now. Go Irish!

If Kelly lost any kids with this, he never had them to begin with. If this hurts their feelings rather than motivates them, what are they going to do if they are fortunate to make it in the NFL and end up playing for somebody like Bill Parcells? Or how about if they end up in the corporate world at a high level position? In general, highly successful people, and CEO's do not get where they are by accepting results and/or effort that are less than what they expect out of themselves and those who work under them.

Time to toughen up, stick your chest out and get it done, kiddies.

You don't motivate a team by calling them out to the media and creating a massive rift between "your guys" and acting like those you inherited are some secondhand trash.

I'm a pretty big BK fan, but that was embarrassing. If Lane Kiffin or any coach for that matter had pulled that, everyone would be up in arms.

As for those who say he's their coach, not their friend, very true. To play for a coach he doesn't have to be your friend, but he needs your respect. Comments like these destroy respect.

Whenever you get someone as grounded and thoughtful as Manti to declare he's playing for his upperclassmen and thats it, there's an issue. If I'm a coach, I'd like my players to be playing for me, the team/school, or at least all the players.

Ha-clearly took a gamble with his comments. BK isn't stupid, he knows what he said.

If you've ever led, you know there is no right way - all the time way - to motivate/lead. Sometimes you have to lay it out there. Now, it may not work for him. We shall see....

This is the gist:
Having a hard time getting some to play his type of football. He was asked repeatedly if this happened at Cincy or if this is something that happens because of the type of kid that goes to Notre Dame and he said basically you can tell which guys he recruited, they get it. The others are making progress, they are coming along.

Hey coach.......if you had a better game plan we would have won that game. This is not all on the kids. The defensive scheme wasn't that great either. You can't give Barkley that much time to throw.,...everyone knows that. And you need to call timeouts even if we're losing so the other team won't call us quitters. This is all on you!

I have absolutely no problem with what he said. If the upperclassmen have a problem with it... good. They can take their anger and frustration out on the opposing team. They need to prove that they actually have the desire and will to win.

This all goes back to the video I posted in another thread with Aaron Taylor. He said the same thing. There is no leadership from the upperclassmen. They should be the ones who carry this team on their shoulders.

We're over half-way through the season, and nobody's stepped up to lead. IMO, this is what Kelly's talking about. If it motivates just one player, he's proved his point.

So let me get this straight...our offensive line does not get "it"; Eifert either, same for Floyd, Manti, Carlo, Gray, Slaughter...I can keep going.

I don't have an issue with calling your team out in the media, but these guys have been grinding for a year and a half. If the effort has been lacking in practice, say that. If you don't like the play on the field, sit those guys out. This just smells bad.

I hope this works. Judging by Twitter, it is not. From Cave to Golic, it set out a ripple with the upperclass. I don't know...I guess we find out tomorrow at 3:30 EST.
