Hey coach.......if you had a better game plan we would have won that game. This is not all on the kids. The defensive scheme wasn't that great either. You can't give Barkley that much time to throw.,...everyone knows that. And you need to call timeouts even if we're losing so the other team won't call us quitters. This is all on you!

Those timeouts are semantics if the defense doesnt get a stop, and Im not interested in semantics. Getting pressure on Barkley? How about not leaving your feet on a half *** pump fake on a vital 4th down early in the game? Oh yea, those damn coaches. THe defensive gameplan wasn't great, but the only thing worse was the execution by the players.

This is in no way meant to be confrontational...just my two cents ok?

the game plan---there is a difference between the game plan and the execution of said game plan, not being in on the planning, I do not know which part of that failed, but my guess is at least part of both

Barkley---I was not in on the planning, but my guess is that they didn't really want to give him that much time to throw...as you said everyone knows that

"you need to call timeouts even if we're losing so the other team won't call us quitters"--- Huh? You want him to call the time outs for no apparent reason just so the other team doesn't call us names? Re-watching the end, I am not sure exactly what points I would have wanted time outs. (I know that argument is up for debate and should be, but remember, this is strictly my opinion here) Did you see the end of MSU-Wisc? I think Wisc wished in the end that they hadn't called the timeout that they did use

You don't motivate a team by calling them out to the media and creating a massive rift between "your guys" and acting like those you inherited are some secondhand trash.

I'm a pretty big BK fan, but that was embarrassing. If Lane Kiffin or any coach for that matter had pulled that, everyone would be up in arms.

As for those who say he's their coach, not their friend, very true. To play for a coach he doesn't have to be your friend, but he needs your respect. Comments like these destroy respect.

Whenever you get someone as grounded and thoughtful as Manti to declare he's playing for his upperclassmen and thats it, there's an issue. If I'm a coach, I'd like my players to be playing for me, the team/school, or at least all the players.

There's no place for hurt feelings in the game of football, except as a learning point or teaching tool. How many times has Coach Kelly praised his players (as in lower AND upperclassmen) before in the past? If you don't think he has shown respect for his players, why would he have named Manti and Cierre game captains for the USC contest?

They are all HIS players. Time and time again he has protected the entire team from the crap-slinging media and ND community. He took a huge gamble on Michael Floyd, and people were calling for his head and talking all kinds of sh*t about his decision. The guy made HARRISON SMITH captain of the season. The same Harrison Smith that supposed "ND fans" have taken a dump on for most of his NCAA career.

Jeez, my father has called me out on lesser crap than this and in public situations. It took me a while to grow up, but when I did, thank God I had someone to challenge me when I thought I was hot sh*t. Manti is a very talented player and a good kid, but if you think he's done growing up, you must be very young (as in maturity).

And as for Lane Kiffin, what are you talking about? That joker wouldn't know respect if it smacked him in the face . . .

Bad gamble by Kelly. I think he got pushed into saying it by the reporter, and he would probably take it back if he could.

If ANY of the players got their feelings hurt by what BK said, they should turn in their shoulder pads for a tutu. This is tackle football, STOP SNIVELING, STRAP IT ON AND GO HIT SOMEONE!

What's he gonna do? Name a true freshman as team captain?

^This.
So what impact does this have on a guy like Manti coming back for his senior year? Why would he come back and play for Kelly?

The game plan was clearly not excuted. I am not saying this because I used to coach, but I am saying this because it was easy to see.

Why the hell is he talking to the media every day when he should be focusing on getting this team ready?

All this is doing is creating needless controversy and distraction.

Oh yeah, and are you really telling me that the upperclassmen on the Oline and guys like Eifert are only just coming along?

Disagree on everything except "you can't give Barkely that much time to throw." The defense, aside from getting gashed where KLM used, to be played a great game.

I love these comments by Kelly. Way to light the fire.

It's not about hurt feelings. It's about creating a division within the team. He's basically saying to some of these players, "If it had been up to me, you wouldn't be here." And that's obviously gonna also **** off the stars like Manti, who is going to stand up for his teammates.

So let me get this straight...our offensive line does not get "it"; Eifert either, same for Floyd, Manti, Carlo, Gray, Slaughter...I can keep going.

I don't have an issue with calling your team out in the media, but these guys have been grinding for a year and a half. If the effort has been lacking in practice, say that. If you don't like the play on the field, sit those guys out. This just smells bad.

I hope this works. Judging by Twitter, it is not. From Cave to Golic, it set out a ripple with the upperclass. I don't know...I guess we find out tomorrow at 3:30 EST.

Probably. My thought is he will be "verbally" sportin' that "candy @ss" baby blue sweater with his comments in an attempt to minimize what he said (because he didn't really mean what he said-haha). If he let's it lay-good on him for sticking to his guns.

I think he's awesome, but if this hurt Mantis' feelings he's definitely not ready for the NFL.

Not to be condescending, but a good coach will often use broad generalizations to get his entire team motivated. If you knew you were giving 110% and others were giving less, a statement like this from your coach would push you to help lift your other teammates to rise to the occasion. That is if you are a competitor who views yourself as part of a team. My bet is that a player like Eifert wouldn't sulk in this situation. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with you fully; however, he is still our best linebacker, the leader of our defense. You can't just lump all of the upperclass together and throw them collectively under the bus.

I disagree completely. I think his response shows that he cares about his teammates (obviously Kelly isn't talking about Manti) and isn't afraid to back them up.

what's really sad is we're having this discussion. i truly cannot believe ND is in this situation yet again. they better have pride in themselves and go out and punk Navy b/c Navy has punk'd these kids repeatedly the last 4 years. i could care less what Kelly says. at some point these kids need to take care of their own business.

Kelly has spoken out about this before. He wants to change the overwhelming PR obligation the coaches and team have during the season so they can do just that: focus on football.

I really hope a fire was lit and that our players and leaders take it to heart and take it to the field on Saturday. A good ole fashion butt whipping of Navy would help things considerably. We need that anger and passion on the field not off of it. Our team needs to play better Period! We are much too talented to not win the games in which we have lost. It's like BK said...., if we were beaten by the better team then so be it...., but that is clearly not the case. We have beaten ourselves repeatedly and we have the record to show for it. I believe in BK and I believe in our players. Everyone needs to get on the same page and start playing smarter football. This team can get itself together but it starts with eliminating stupid mistakes. The entire blame is not rested on the players (although a big part of it is) but the coaches as well. I for one am looking forward to this Saturday. I hope we come out and whip their tails.

I hope he gets all the upperclassmen together and says, "Did what I say *iss ya off? Prove me wrong and I'll apologize right after the Navy game, if you want me to."

I believe that this was said during his regular weekly radio show and not just some after practice 10 minute press conference, so even if you cut down on media obligations, the weekly radio show would probably still continue and would not have affected this situation

I understand what your saying, but he has to have thicker skin than that, be a LEADER and help the coach, not be a mommy type with juice and band-aids.
